I met Dan at the PRA Annual Fly-In, at the airport our club (PRA) owns at Mentone Indiana. THe Fly-In this year is to be held Aug 4-8, 2009. Please come and enjoy and observe how we REALLY fly and operate our Gyrocopters in a safe and fun fashion. Dan was a fun guy, but he was dangerous. This video is NOT a representation of the gyro community at large, but shows how recklessness and inattention to safety eventually leads to disasterous results. I count at least 8 safety violations here.
For ultra light aircraft, the regulations specify that they are not to be flown over populated areas. I would say he met that criteria for the most part. The rules are a little different for certified aircraft. In sparsely populated areas it is 500' from any person place or thing. Populated areas it is 1000' vertical and 2000' horizontal; landing being an exception to the rule.
Gyrocopters ought to be exempt from that law, seeing that they are capable of landing vertically like a helicopter if the engine fails. Some are even capable of taking off in a nearly vertical direction.
waaaaajajajajajajajajaaaaahhhh veeeeeery funny girocopter, very georgeous gyrocopter this gyrocopte is t-rex 50 horsepower.phineas and ferb like it.very georgeous
that sure is one dodgy takeoff strip. only meters from people, buildings, cars. It just isnt worth the risk when you've got huge spinning blades above you that could easily kill someone.
this man is my uncle dan, and i love and miss him very much. for all of you who don't know him he loved flying gyros and building them. He loved living life on the edge and not worring about tomorrow. He always loved having a challenge and showing people his finished projects. So please don't bash him becuase u feel he was doing things unsafe, you don't know him and if you did you would not being saying such things.
The whole thing looked pretty dodgy to me and full of potential hazzards. Close proximity of people, uneven ground, rushed take off, etc, etc. You do this sort of thing often enough and disaster will eventually come your way. Gyroplanes are not toys - they should be treated like all flying machines and all phases of flight should be under cool, calm and controlled conditions. Lets not mess around and give these wonderfull machines any more bad publicity.
Sorry to hear about your loss and sadness in this matter. The way forward offcourse,as often quoted in these situations, is to make sure it does not happen again. Let's just hope that all those interested in these wonderful machines treat them with the respect they deserve. What a contradiction it is that the simpilicity of design that makes the gyro so inherently safe also makes it look like a toy and so become inherently dangerous.
its amazing when someone with such skill gets called careless,,,I ,,on the other hand,,recognize the skill this guy had,,and it so sad that he's passed,,,I'm sure he didnt' want to be known as the guy who died doing what he loved,,because he, like I, know that the skeptics, would rip him apart because of their impending ignorance and self proclaimed expertise. RIP skydancer, you made it look so effortless.
I am sorry people that watch this video the person who is driving this gyrocopter is no longer with us, he has pasted on. Anyways with that being said, also we no longer sell gyrocopters. We are sorry for this. We give Daniel Grochowski our blessings.
I love gyrocopters even though I dont fly them. Caught this video and then saw the last comment. Sorry to hear about it. We just lost 9 skydivers and pilot here in Washington. But I will be in the air this weekend. Thank you Dan for your contribution to air sports!
My sincere condolences to Dan Grochowski's family and loved ones (Kim). You were a wonderful person and friend with a kind, compassionate heart. May your angel wings allow you to joyfully soar forever.

This wasn't where his accident occurred, but I understand what you're saying.
He really was just as crazy as he seemed, I remember him asking everyone at his parties if they'd like to take it for a ride.
It kills me inside to know he's dead, but I'm happy he did something with his life that made him happy.

Yeah, he was only supposed to take the gyro his company had built up about 10 feet, but he was so confident that he took it up 50 feet.
Thanks for the kind words.
