Wow! This gives me instant nostalgia and I remember the different places at the mall that tried to replicate the DZ! Does anybody remember the Men In Black laser tag they had there? It was F'ing badass but I'm sure being 21 now it would seem a lot smaller.
OMG!!! i loved this place. would be there for hours and be mad when we had to leave. i would be pelting my sisters so hard with the balls. i was so upset when i found out they closed. beats out chuck e cheese any day. everytime something is good it always has to shut down. smh
I remember my 6th birthday party here as well hahahaha man the memories were incredible i was sooo excited when i got there man chuck e cheese doesnt even compare too dz
I had my 6th birthday at the Discovery Zone. Still miss it yo. And I feel bad for today's kids. They have Chuck e Cheese but nothing can compare to DZ. It's now a Panera Bread where my DZ was
I had my 6th birthday at the Discovery Zone. Still miss it yo. And I feel bad for today's kids. They have Chuck e Cheese but nothing can compare to DZ. It's now a Panera Bread where my DZ was
The discovery zone i went to in columbus ohio has this colorful, shiny block like structure right outside next to it, and I remember looking at it every time we went. at night time, it looked so beautiful...
I remember going to the one in Overland Park, KS a couple of times . I had one of my birthday parties there one time and just recently my Dad found the photos from that event. The building were DZ used to be is still there, though now an art store and a hair saloon occupy the place.
I used to love the Disocvery Zone when I was little. It's a shame that they closed it down and I can't introduce my nieces and nephews to it when my older sister has children. They turned the Discovey Zone into Whole Foods Grocery Store in Houston Texas.
omg im 18 rite now i used to go to DZ wen i was a baby on my 2nd bday with my mom n my dad i remember playon da ball pits, the games n eatn cake n pizza gd memories i live in bklyn ny they used to have DZ in downtown brooklyns gallery mall until it got shut down in 1999 wen my mom was about to take me there again on my 5th bday. but now in 99 dz is brought by chuck e cheese. this suck man my childhd is gone even got shut down n 2007 n tryna rebuild it at 2012
And there were arcade games so you could win tickets...and laser tag.
My favorite part was that thing you held on to and it slid you through the air onto some mats. My Ma had to coax me down the first time lol I was just hanging, afraid to let go
I really miss being a kid sometimes. I drove past the strip mall today where a Discovery Zone used to be years and years ago. I remembered my family taking me there. Great times.
DZ went bankrupt and Chuck E Cheese stayed aloat hmmm? DZ had one of the largest plastic ball pools I have ever seen in my life probably because I was a kid at the time but man it a whole lot of fun getting lost in them. I to wish they'd bring DZ back agian sure would get these kids off these video games.
I only ever got to go to Discovery Zone once, but I loved it when I went there. For me, it was even better because I went to DZ only one day before my beach vacation.
This used to be my most favorite place in the world! The one I went to closed when I was 9 years old. I'd give anything to be able to play at this place one more time! *cries*
Huge Ball Pits, Slides, mazes, awesome site for a kids birthday party. kids really had the time of their lives at DZ. Today I'm 23 years old. I can definitely recall having either my 5 or 6th birthday party at Discovery Zone. DZ truly was were kids wanted to be in the 90's. If i could go back today and jump in that ball pit one last time like I was 5 or 6 years old again. Damn right I would.
DZ filed for Bankruptcy in 1996 bought out by Chuckie Cheese in 1999 or 2000. Half of DZ's locations were boarded up the rest became Chuckie Cheese buildings.
I had my first date at age 12 here. I remember trying to make out in the ball pit when WHAM! A plastic ball came slamming into my face, while 3 kids not much older than 4 years old were taunting us. The boyfriend got furious and started a chase them through all the obstacle courses, only to end with my boyfriend beating the one kid with a sock. We got kicked out....LOL.
I was 3 when they shut down, maybe 2..that makes DZ one of my earliest memories, and one of my most Fond :D I remember driving by the building and wanting to go in, but my parents wouldnt let me..really didnt believe them when they said it was gone :(
I don't know if anyone else remembers this, but there were some dangerous ass obstacles at Discovery Zone. I distinctly remember a bit with criss-crossed rubber cables with enormous gaps in between and it just had three levels of that like, if the cables hadn't broken your fall before then, at least the floor was padded. That's what made DZ so fucking amazing, i think.
My parents NEVER took me to a Discovery Zone at all. On one of my birthdays, after constant begging, my parents finally caved in. So they drove me up to the location, only to find out it was closed down and replaced with Furniture Zone. It's still there today, taunting my childhood.
@SetnaroX The only DZ close to home was in a mall...never set foot in it whatsoever. Following the demise of Discovery Zone, the place became a correspondance college (or whatever it is).
oh my effing gosh! i finally figured out the name of this place. i have memories of the rainbow colored slides and everything. i recall this place but for like 10 years couldn't remember the name or if anyone else knew about it. damn, then party city came in and ruined my childhood.
90s TV kids were incredibly irritating, weren't they? The attitude, the behavior, the clothes... ugh. But I'm so glad I was a real 90s kid so I got to play at DZ. And the even-better Leaps and Bounds (harder to find in my area.) My possible future children will be so jealous when I tell them about that place.
did anyone else find out that discovery zone was gone forever when they drove by it with their parents....I remember screaming when I saw the for sale sign. oh man DZ was so awesome. I'm 25 years old now and yes my butt would be first in line. kids these days are being robbed of a lot things including childhoods.
@stop08it So glad I got to go when I was a kid, several times. But when I see today's kids who can't make simple change for a dollar, I just laugh and say "sucks to be you assholes."
i remember my mom was going to take me to DZ on my birthday. That's when I found out it was gone forever. I had my birthday at Chuck E. Cheese and was not happy at all :(
@ndBryan Well, people started wanting to be outside a lot more and less inside. Like, how they made playgrounds at parks a lot better, people would rather go there instead of spending all of their money at dz. I know, that was fun.
@Johnjacob654 thats assuming you live in an area where it's always nice... its june 14th today in milwaukee wisconsin, and we've only had about two decent days so far all summer that were nice enough to spend hours outside.
@Johnjacob654 There's a McDonald's near my sister's college that has the playplace outside. It's different though; it doesn't have the netting and stuff. It's more like a really big Little Tykes playground since all the walls and floors are solid.
I loved DZ so much! Way better than chuckie cheese. I miss it..I'm almost 24 and I would totally still go there and play lol if there were any open. Someone needs to open up another DZ, especially since we all agree on still wanting to go..it'd get great business from people 18+ lol. And it'd be great for kids now too since everyone is so concerned about childhood obesity these days. They could run around and burn off fat, instead of playing video games at home and at chuck e cheese!
i honestly think if they opened up an 18 and up or 21 an up DZ it would be amazing! im 21 and i wish there was a place i could go play tag with my bros lol
@Nize94 The one we had around here was first called Leaps & Bounds. One of the last parties they had there before converting was my birthday party (4 or 5, can't remember), I got a commemorative plate from there somewhere. Had 2 or3 birthdays at DZ. Now Chuck E. basically has that business monopolized.
This commercial is actually very true to my childhood days... in 1996 and 1997 I had birthday parties at places just like this... and sure enough, by 2000, the place was no more. Guess home entertainment and the death of the arcades really killed these places off.
a friend linked me to this but i dont remember this... but thats weird cus although i was born in 92 i usually remember things like this...all i remember is Chuck-E-Cheese...
I missed that place hardcore, Luckly we have some new palce like that around there, I sitll know were the old DZ is at D: i look at it and become sad.
I was so upset when this place closed. DZ was one of my favorite places to go as a kid. The one that used to be by my house eventually became an office building. It was kinda sad.
these places are disgusting as hell. they reek of kid's stinky feet, pee smell from the rides , poop smears on the slides and needless to say the horrific puke tasting fast-food nasty cheap domestic pizza that they make.
my best birthday party ever was at DZ!!! lol i remember my brother got yelled at by a granny hogging the kid pop-a-shot...fine she got po'd at him for forcefully joining in her grand-daughter's game...oh the fun memories
DZ was MILES better than Chuck E Cheese. Not only bigger but better. quantity and quality. I miss this place. I am 21 now and I would seriously run around in a DZ now if they were still around. i miss them so much
i used to have so much fun at these. They had one in Hanover, MA near the town i lived in and it looked just like the one in the commercial. They really need to bring places like that back for kids so they don't spend all their time in front of a tv or computer.
This was my favorite place when I was a kid. I'm now turning 20 and I still wish I could've spent a couple of more years playing in the tunnels before they shut it down!
WOW I actually remember that commercial. Had my 9th birthday at one, celebrated with bro (b days are 10 days apart) and we invited like 30 people, who each brought us both presents. Best birthday a kid could have, especially in a place like DZ
Im designing places like that in my head. If only i had an investor, lol. I let my kid run around the library, but hes too polite to pull the books off the shelf so its no fun.
This place went out of business because just about every Mcdonalds started putting in playgrounds. So why take your kids to a place like DZ? When you could just go to Mcdonalds where the food is much cheaper and the playground is free. Also DZ I'm sure had a lot of lawsuits from kids doing things against the rules or playing ruff and getting hurt. I remember I almost got kicked out when I was a kid for doing dives off the staircase of mats room.
McDonalds owned DZ competitor Leap's and Bounds (later sold to DZ) and figured out the profits came from the food sold there, not the funcenter itself
I used to work there back in 1996. In Simi Valley, it was my first job. I met a girl who was also my co-worker and she even came to my birthday! I miss that place. I had great memories still but with that woman I liked.
Damn I remember crushing all the kids and throwing balls at kids who got in my way. I owned that place! I remember exactly where it used to be. I think it's a china buffet or some shit now
I'm 21 now, but if they ever opened DZ back up I'd be the first one in line. I miss that place. My best childhood memories were there. When I hear kids talking about Chuck E Cheese and I say "Well if you like Chuck E Cheese, you would have LOVED DZ!" and they're like "...Where?" that hurts my heart.
when i went to chuck e cheese, i had to play it cool, (fib if you will,) and tell chuck he was my number 1 guy, when it was dz that was the shit to be at. he was second best, only to be flat out squashed by DZ! diego for life! will there be any other place cooler than this? i don't think so! and like a few of you, i had a huge crush on one of the attendants there. seriously wanted to do lunch with her.
i remember losing my little brother in the massive tunnels. my mom got mad and made me go search for him... took like 4 hours.. ok prob not that long, but to a 7 yr old it felt like a long time :P
I think these places vanished because of how they made the playgrounds at parks better so people didn't have to spend all their money here plus nobody wants to be inside a stuffy old tunnel all the time.
I remember working there and a kid pooped in side the tubes and a co-worker stepped right in it. He had to vacuum it up and he took off both socks and threw them in the trash can. He always told me I got away with it all the time.
Wow! This gives me instant nostalgia and I remember the different places at the mall that tried to replicate the DZ! Does anybody remember the Men In Black laser tag they had there? It was F'ing badass but I'm sure being 21 now it would seem a lot smaller.

I can't even remember what our old discovery zone turned into. It was located outside New Orleans, La.
What pissed me off is I googled it. It closed due to a poor management and a mismanagement of funds :((
I mean all the DZ's. Not just the one in my area.

McDonalds sound Leaps & Bound to Discovery Zone after figuring out the profits came from the food sold there
nomadcowatbk 7 months ago
This commercial is actually very true to my childhood days... in 1996 and 1997 I had birthday parties at places just like this... and sure enough, by 2000, the place was no more. Guess home entertainment and the death of the arcades really killed these places off.
Railer505 9 months ago
@Railer505 Cultural sterlization and parental paranoia were the main things.

Aw that place was awesome I broke my nose at my 8th bday party there running into a bar. Freaking hilarious watching the video of it happen.

I remember going to see Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and afterwards running a muck in this place, ah miss the 90's.... :(

Ilovetune0806 1 year ago 2
WOW I actually remember that commercial. Had my 9th birthday at one, celebrated with bro (b days are 10 days apart) and we invited like 30 people, who each brought us both presents. Best birthday a kid could have, especially in a place like DZ
onionofdeath 1 year ago
@onionofdeath i had mine there too. remember how it made you the coolest kid in school for a week?
aphextron 10 months ago
Im designing places like that in my head. If only i had an investor, lol. I let my kid run around the library, but hes too polite to pull the books off the shelf so its no fun.
grendelee 1 year ago
This place went out of business because just about every Mcdonalds started putting in playgrounds. So why take your kids to a place like DZ? When you could just go to Mcdonalds where the food is much cheaper and the playground is free. Also DZ I'm sure had a lot of lawsuits from kids doing things against the rules or playing ruff and getting hurt. I remember I almost got kicked out when I was a kid for doing dives off the staircase of mats room.

@djsdojo83
McDonalds seems to be phasing out playgrounds
nomadcowatbk 7 months ago
@nomadcowatbk that's because they're probably banking on adults too lazy to cook their own meals now
hook em when they're young and keep on reelin em when they're older!
Viratic 7 months ago
@djsdojo83
McDonalds owned DZ competitor Leap's and Bounds (later sold to DZ) and figured out the profits came from the food sold there, not the funcenter itself
nomadcowatbk 7 months ago
@djsdojo83
DZ also expanded too quickly, Blockbuster's management thought they could put them on every corner like Blockbuster
nomadcowatbk 7 months ago
I used to work there back in 1996. In Simi Valley, it was my first job. I met a girl who was also my co-worker and she even came to my birthday! I miss that place. I had great memories still but with that woman I liked.

It is all fun and games until a kid pisses in the ball pit or on one of the slides, then you never want to go to one of these places ever again.

When I hear kids talking about Chuck E Cheese and I say "Well if you like Chuck E Cheese, you would have LOVED DZ!" and they're like "...Where?" that hurts my heart.
nyceesqt 1 year ago 62
when i went to chuck e cheese, i had to play it cool, (fib if you will,) and tell chuck he was my number 1 guy, when it was dz that was the shit to be at. he was second best, only to be flat out squashed by DZ! diego for life! will there be any other place cooler than this? i don't think so! and like a few of you, i had a huge crush on one of the attendants there. seriously wanted to do lunch with her.

I loved going there when I was 5. When I was 7, I was sad that they closed it.
Gabby5200 1 year ago
God damn. I have photos of me as a child climbing up on the pyramid they would have in the middle of the ball pit.
BAWLINNNNNNN.
Kids would get their lip rolled up and busted in the roller slide... they don't make'em like that anymore. Good times

i remember losing my little brother in the massive tunnels. my mom got mad and made me go search for him... took like 4 hours.. ok prob not that long, but to a 7 yr old it felt like a long time :P
FlyinRaptorJesus 1 year ago
I think these places vanished because of how they made the playgrounds at parks better so people didn't have to spend all their money here plus nobody wants to be inside a stuffy old tunnel all the time.
allenjayfish 1 year ago
I loved this place soooooo much and was sad when the one in Toledo closed.

Oh geez, I remember going there when I was smaller. It was the best indoor playground ever.

I remember working there and a kid pooped in side the tubes and a co-worker stepped right in it. He had to vacuum it up and he took off both socks and threw them in the trash can. He always told me I got away with it all the time.
