Vivian Vance really stole the show on I Love Lucy, in spite of the sometimes frumpy hair and clothing fashions that made her (and Lucy) look way older. Later, on The Lucy Show, the girls looked younger and more modern. Viv looks great, and I can't take my eyes off her--she literally sparkles!!
They were just the perfect combination, who knew when they first met??? You'd have to be a great performer and talented to hold your own with Lucille Ball. In hindsight, we see they were one of the great comic duos of all time, even though they were not billed as such at the time.
Lucy definitely had a tendency to get angry, but so did Tallulah Bankhead. I think sometimes Lucy felt threatened, but WHO WOULDN'T feel a little threatened up on a throne as the queen of comedy (afterall, when you're on a throne, it means you're alone, in a sense). Vivian Vance, on the other head, was beautiful AND charming (not a combo you find too often). I will certainly say that it's my natural inclination to like Vivian better than Lucy...she's more approachable, at least for me.
@Jennafu832 I agree! Don't get me wrong, I love Lucy. As a character, no one could get in a mess better that she could. As an actress, she was the best at physical comedy. But I don't think any of it would have been half as funny without Vivian by her side.
Viv is the truley overlooked person of the cast. She was witty and nice, and VERY humble and modest for her talent. Lucy never took all the credit because she knew that Vivian never got as much as Bill Frawley or Desi. When you ask someone, "Do You know who Lucy is?" The first thing that probably comes to their mind is Lucille Ball. But when you say,"You remember Vivian Vance?" They won't know. I love u viv! RIP
Gotta love Vivian. I Love Lucy wouldn't have been the same without her.
