IT IS COMING...! For further details - website launch etc - please contact laurelhardyladyno12010@hotmail.co.uk and join in one united effort to bring Laurel and Hardy back into all our lives!
Well, I could go on about this but as I am not Black, I love that L&H are dancing to Armenian music, and frankly -- I’m offended that Hardy is not wearing old-country pantalons, a kodit, and is not holding a giant shish over an open flame. Written by my niece Ali from LA
The Marx Bros were a little different in that they were a later era and they were not WASPS. I own a lot of their movies but just last year I saw "Horse Feathers" on the big screen at the historic Alex Theatre. There was a disclaimer at the beginning from the head of the LA Film Preservation Society, warning us of the scene that was to come; one that could be perceived as racist.
This particular dance scene is great because -- although it’s just the duo in the clip -- it has come under scrutiny by many modern film-buffs. Many of the duo's 2-reelers contained dance scenes but this one (eventually) had extras and entire choreographed throngs of what would now be referred to as racist. That is to say, whether accurate or not, their depiction of Afro-Americans are in ghettos or juke-joints but making merry nonetheless.
Laurel, on the other hand, was of Scottish extraction. (His birth surname was Jefferson.) His schooling was basically eking out a living as a troubadour. He had to sing and dance at an early age and maintain a "vaudeville-like" act. He came the US and teamed up with Ollie after a funny but rather unsuccessful solo film short.
Actually, L&H were both lovers of dance from early on, although from different cultures.
Hardy (the big one) is a direct decedent of Captain Hardy. His parents were English but they settled in Georgia where they owned a small hotel. Mr. Hardy Sr. died prematurely, so Little Ollie "Norville" was raised by his music-loving/piano playing mama and always singing and dancing his way to school. He made it his profession, often entertaining hotel guests until he landed in LA. (To be cont'd)
