now this is classic tv comedy. the episode where carol parodied scarlett o'hara is hysterical. comedies of today can't touch these classics. I buy dvd's of the old comedies and bypass the junk of today.
You know you're a Huge Star when you are impersonated. Bette once said that in an interview and she is so right. There were only two woman who towered above them and in the 1940's were able to carry a film just on their names alone & that is Bette Davis & Judy Garland both tiny women but Giants in their careers. I have great respect and in awe of their talent. Both polar opposites Bette was the strong Independent type & Judy the Vulnerable type. If ever two people were Living Legends,it's them!
eve harrington was nothing l ike that. she never overtly tried to destroy margo in such a scene. yes, margo was paranoid, but at least make the parody have some truth.
i didn't get bette davis outta this, but the piece was hilarious. it's odd because carol has done bette davis before and it is DEAD ON!
regardless of the impersonation, i thought this piece was awesome. i loved the way carol executed the "EVEs." and the giant inhales between words.. it's great!!
The reason this sorta works and sorta doesn't is two-fold. It works for people who have seen a lot of Davis movies. Older Bette had a bizarre way of (beat) pausing in odd places and then (beat) EMPHASIZING otherwise meaningless words. (Think of the line from Eve "How (beat) WAS Miss Caswell anyway?)
It sorta doesn't work because Davis did this on purpose: in her later career she chose to exaggerate her persona. She was her own best parody. What could be more over-the-top than Bette herself?
I think the point was that Davis- who lived on cigarettes every waking moment- had a very odd way of breaking up her dialog, frequently having to stop and take a gulp of air, then finish what she was saying.
As great an actress as she was, Davis- especially in her later years- broke up her sentences in a way that often lacked continuity or made no sense. Carol picked up on this and it started out funny, but yeah, an exaggeration can be exaggerated.
This clip is brilliant. Every actor/actress has their own subtle idiosyncrasies in their performances, and it makes for great comedy when people like Carol Burnett embellishes them. The funny thing is when I saw Bette Davis in a film after this clip, I could see where Carol Burnett drew her inspiration when she parodied Davis. Davis doesn't really act this way, but it is definitely there; it's just funny when it's played up. Nicely done.
carol is a great comedienne, but that was just a really poor exaggeration of Bette. She was never THAT dramatic. Its was a lil too slap stick for me. But, for every high brow there's a low. To each his own.
Of course it's highly exaggerated--if it was subtly exaggerated, it wouldn't have the humor that comes with excessive hyperbole. Like the MadTV spoof of West Wing where all the characters just repeat each other's dialogue and then start running around inside the White House. That was funny because it was so extreme. But I can see why that kind of thing wouldn't appeal to everybody. ^_^
HAHAHA lOVE THE MOVIE AND LOVE THIS TOO.

Oh lord. Just realized that Carol's performance here also resembles Tim Curry's Frank-N-Furter in Rocky Horror. LOL

Well, kind of. You HAVE to see the movie to appreciate the caricature.
Althought I recall seeing the Carol Burnett sketch before I saw the movie, and it was still hilarious.
