Looks more tedious to load compared to the Mares Leg. I know it's easy to make a speedloader for a mares leg but is there such thing as a speedloader for a rossi ranch do you think?
it has a saddle ring on it, just as other saddle ring carbines do. it was meant to have a sling fixed to the ring in order to keep the gun handy whilst riding a horse, an early version of the single point sling.
I bought a 45LC Ranch Hand in case of a close encounter with a Brown Bear. I have a cabin in Alaska with quick access to the Kenai River. Also I have a special belt holster for it that gives you instant access. When the salmon aren't running they'll come up around houses looking for garbage cans and etc. It's definitely a gun for close up shooting.
It's really meant to be shot from the hip, rather than aimed with the iron sights but if you do want to use the sight, bring it up towards your shoulder as if it were a rifle but don't try and shoulder it (there is not nearly enough stock for that and a pistol round doesn't have the recoil to justify it). Recoil is minimal because there is a lot of gun (mass) for a pistol cartridge not due to barrel length or powder burning (odd idea there) and it shoots like a dog in .44 Mag, get the 38/357.
@Nekonoaijin You learn something new every day. The only problem I have aiming the way you describe is I can't get the gun as steady as I can by shooting it like a pistol.
Fair enough :¬) It's a fun gun, never was truly practically, unlike the real (much larger) carbines were. Hope you have a lot of fun with it, I am seriously eyeing one up after playing with it some months back. In 38/357 which seems to be the 'sweet spot' for calibre. I know an owner of it in 44 and he says it's not really manageable; makes a lot of noise but he can hit the target, not a spot on the target, if you see what I mean. 357 is hot enough and accurate.
@Nekonoaijin I have a 16" version in 45 LC that I love, I will be doing a video on it soon. It is much more practical and I find myself shooting it more.
That I can believe, would love to hear about it when you do - 45 LC is the other calibre I'd consider but 44 Mag just seems unsuited to such a gun. There is a Henry gun which is similar but a lot heavier and more expensive (all brass receiver) and I bet that shoots very nicely in larger calibres but it's at least twice the cost, more like 3 times from what I saw.
To correct the feeding problem you need to bring it back to whoever you bought it from so they can give it to their gunsmith and they will take out the feeding rails and smooth them down and oil them so they 357 rounds will feed more smoothly.
hey guy the cowboy speed shooters pad the lever and polish the bolt to make its action very fast and smooth. do you think it could be cleaned up like that?
I kind of want this gun for the cool factor but is seems almost useless to me. I dont know if it would be worth having for a small truck, quad, tractor gun or not. It is not considered a handgun in Canada so that is one major thing it would have going on for it. It just looks really awkward and weird to shoot.
@Leprechraun yeah man im looking at it for that reason too but a lot of ppl are saying the little stock it has and everything throws the weight off and makes it difficult to shoot, i might just ditch the idea and grab something else at long range it would suck pretty bad, the marlin lever actions arent too long and much more accurate, not to mention cheaper, full size lever action could easily b a truck/quad/etc gun, i was considering this for the house but it definitely has its issues
I agree with mcmikeblues, 357 and 44 mags are pricey rounds to waste on something you could kill with a long stick. Henry does make a mare's leg in .22 cal though. But If Im buying one its gonne be 45 cal or 44 mag. nothing else.
@XxRpDxKLUtCHxX i would suggest a smaller caliber for a snake gun, a .22lr will kill a snake so theres no point in carrying around heavy, expensive rounds
@frankgon4 You cannot do anything to lengthen the stock. It would be an NFA short barreled rifle. Rossi makes it exactly to the specifications that make it legal. Hope that helps.
@MrLooseSkrews Thsnks . I checked with my Gunsmith and received the same info. He said it could be done, but I would have to pay $200 for a tax stamp for a short barreled rifle.
mine feeds .357's better than the .38's. the .38's always want to jump out of the top and eject prematurely if you are working the lever hard. if you work the lever a little slower with the .38's it feeds fine. absolutely no problems w/ .357. its surprisingly a great shooting gun and very accurate once you get over the awkward hold. my first rossi (not my first lever gun though), definitely won't be my last rossi. next up is a 16" R92 in .357.
yeah nice gun!!!! Just get the rifle and cut it down and just shoot it around at home. I know it would be illegal but keep it hid!! that is what I an thinking of doing
Does it look like a standard Winchester 94 stock configuration, so that if a person wanted, they could add a longer stock and have a real nice brush gun?
@MustangTrainer I'm pretty sure if you did that it would make the gun illegal because then it would be a rifle with a illegal length barrel, not a pistol.
I like the video a lot, a really good review of the gun. Also I'm not sure if you saw jb custom's holsters. They have one that just slides on to a belt but i forget the price.
I want one of these really bad but I have a couple more years before I get one. When I get one I want it in .357, that's if they continue to make them by the time I can get one.
You should do one more video where you go to seperate areas and shoot from different positions to show people what it would be like.
No practical use! what about zombie apocalypse! lol
good review, I am getting one of these because they are not classified as handguns in Canada, and we cant bring handguns anywhere so it will be nice to have a handy backpacking/bush rifle for animal defense.
You could use the loop on the receiver for a single point sling if you wanted.. and another thing that might be fun to try is putting some leather loops under the butt plate so you could attach a sling from your vest to the back of the stock and help anchor the gun as you apply forward pressure with your front hand.
You might get better stability and I think you could crank the lever without dropping the gun off target.

That gun would be great for a 'little person' lol All she needs is a cushion pad to extend to stock slightly.
