One of the Best Movies of all time, and what a great opener!! I love how he introduces all of the main characters right off the bat, and without a cut!
I cant believe how long some of these shots in boogie nights are, there are so many takes without saying cutt! How did they imagine to do such long shots? imagine when they mess up, they would have to do that whole thing over again.
@mottthehoople684 It was a great time to be young. Until 1981 when PANIC spread when AIDS came about. Then EVERYONE PANICKED about what they did in 1977 1978 1979 and 1980. Your right people tend to romance the past
Hollywood in the 70s was the center of the universe. And porn was the underground capital. There will never be another time like it. When pop culture was happy and fun. Those days are gone forever.
@LAROSADEORO1 True enough. And Scorsese copied and/or was inspired by Welles' uninterrupted four minute opening shot in Touch Of Evil. Scorsese loves to pay homage by copying too. That's what true artists do when not being completely original - they copy and make their own. Almost every innovative camera shot or cinematic trick (might be stretching the truth a bit) can be traced back to Welles. And "Evil" - like Boogie Nights- uses a crane shot that goes back down to ground level as well.
@blisstits I thought of that, but I don't think it can explain the 90 degree tilt on the Boogie Nights sign right at the beginning. As far as I know steadicams don't tilt like that.
@dayviewing Haha yeah that tilt in the beginning is interesting, but I'm pretty sure steadicams can tilt that way, my friend has one and we tried it and it came out pretty close.....but again I'm not sure. I love PTA he probably just took the camera and used his awesome powers and flew through the scene:)
@blisstits One of the best parts of the film Jack Horner Raunchy quote to Eddie Adams: "Theres just something beautiful that just cant wait to get out of those jeans".

Yup. Very well filmed. The way the camera is just sweeping around the club, showing how all the characters are interconnected..

I love this. It's like Ophuls in the way the camera moves and like Altman in how it introduces the characters.

How did they go from a crane shot outside to a steadicam shot inside the club?
dayviewing 1 year ago
@dayviewing I think they had a steadicam operator on a crane and then he simply just got off when they hit the street.
