  • Favorite version of this song and its been covered by a lot of folk artists

  • This appears to be his version from the '61 album DVR Sings, later reissued in '65 as DVR Sings the Blues. It is in my list of top 20 songs/tunes/renditions of all time. There is another version by him on youtube which is nowhere near as good and just demonstrates how it is not necessarily the singer or the song that makes a performance great. This version is absolutely beautiful.

  • @Gluepack It is from that album. It was also released as 'Dave Van Ronk Sings Earthy Ballads and Blues'. Great record by any name. Thanks for the comment.

  • Had to listen to "Tell Old Bill" after this. The Late The Great Dave Van Ronk

  • really incredible.

reminds me a bit of ben e king for some strange and unknown reason.

  • I hadn't heard this either - from '86? Where? His range is a little higher here than on most of his songs.

  • Lost my record with this song on it, and they didn't make a cd of it. Love this song.

  • Sweet Jesus. Hadn't heard this version, just Sublime. You tell her Dave.

  • Van Ronk owns this one.

  • Thanks for posting this.

Van Ronk does this one better than anybody else, even Buckley.

  • Oh, I've been looking for this version for years. Thank you. :)
