Its purpose is to avoid criticism of the Chinese people and the world, countries, Communist Party of China of antics all movies created intentionally to liven up the anti-Japanese movement. This would say classic and typical propaganda tactics of the Communist Party.
At that time China had been suffering fr internal turmoil after Qing dynasty ended, it couldn't defense from any invasions. America was used by the Chinese govt. to fight Japs invasion, but Chinese don't give a shit to America they know these white big nose creatures('gwailo' they called) is also the invader before the Japs.
However, as the producer said this film is targeting to western market, the way it was filmed is no different to typical American movies to make them feel good
