OOh plz ! Battle of Teutoburg forest was a lame ambush ... In most cases the Romans would have wipped some germanic ass ... They knew it was suicide against the romans in open battle ... so they just ambushed a travelling army in a dense forrest . The romans had no further interest in Germania, the empire was too big already
Roman Legions vs Marcomannic Tribe(so called Marcomannic Wars lasted for 14 years)
2.Can You Imagen been a Roman Soldier in these day's?
Can You Imagine being a Marcomannic warrior in those days , no payment , shity food , poor equipment , no bath and a chance to stand and fight with your brothers against ever expanding empire, Priceless
@ bibolinzki - not exactly, whilst the loss of 3 legions in the Teutoburg Forest was a bit of a disaster for Arminius in particular, the Romans avenged their comrades and captured back all 3 of the Imperial Eagles, massacring many German tribes in the process. They didn't see Germania as worth colonising as it wasn't thought to be wealthy enough to bother with.
In History the Germanic tribes defeated the Roman Empire (search for Arminius - Battle of the Teudeburg Forest). There were many Germanic tribes, even the most of the English (a Germanic language) speaking ppl are descendants of the Saxons, a Germanic tribe that lived in North Germany.
@SithLordNefaar022 Anglo-Saxons. That are two Germanic tribes the Anglo and the Saxons, both moved to England and settled there. Their origins are in north Germany today German "Friesland" and Denmark.
Angle-Land => Engleland => England :o)
There were much more tribes like the Suebi or Alamanni where the French name "Allemagne" for Germany came from.
All this tribes have their origins somewhere in Norway, Sweden, Finland..
@LarryScottBB you were right about the battle but unfortuantly this was not the hight of Roman power that had been several years before under the reign of Emperor Trajan in 117 C.E. however Marcus was one of Rome's five "Good Emperors" and did reign during and helped make Paxa Romana but by this time Rome had already given territory up and had begun to shrink.
@LarryScottBB Rome's maximum expansion was when it held lands on the edges of Persia under Trajan and Hadrian, around the early 100s. By that time Rome began to shrink, but that does not mean that it wasn't powerful, it was just too big for Rome to control.
In older times that's what generals did. The man leading the army... is literally leading the army. That's where the phrases "who is in charge" and "who is your leader" are from. And yea, they died sometimes. Many times they lived though, generally if you were a general it meant you had the most experience in battle and you were given the best armor and weapons in all the land.
@SithLordNefaar022 If the language is supposed to be similar to german then the "HUNDE" could mean he's calling them dogs. The rest i can't make sense of :\
@Anonymous247n The barbarian in the beginning Is yelling "Ihr Seid Verfluchte Hunde!" Which translated means "You are damned dogs!" The Beginning when The barbarians are doing their warcries and then he steps out doing that is the most moving part of the movie to me Although the rest of the movie is badass too
@SithLordNefaar022 This is the Battle of Vidobona, when Marco Aurelio defeats the germanish tribes of Quadish and Markmann that often devastes the north-eastern romans border...in this point, Rome was at the maximum of the expansion and power.
ROMA VICTOR! Rome the proud of Europe and it's people... As you can see germans, those were your ancestors, not better than average cromagnons by civilization... you should be thankfull to ROME what you are now. :)
Those Germanians think that cutting off an envoy's head was supposed to be frightening...well, revel in it, for that is your only victory. I hope it was worth getting lots of swords stuck in you later on! lol haha.
I don't think it was meant to be frightening, more so meant to say they weren't there to negotiate, i can respect that. If an envoy came up to you to discuss YOUR surrender/being conquered, what would you do, pack some weed in a bowl n smoke with him? Not likely...
it was the point they'd rather die then roll over n be dominated, hence the whole "People should know when they're conquered" dialogue. Listen n you'll hear Maximus himself say he understands their reaction...
@SithLordNefaar022 Well, he had to go ahead and show the head and then their army does all that howling. I think I get the main point if the soldier came back on the horse with no head on. Supposedly, that was meant to try to lower enemy morale.
Thanks for the tiding of peace. Glad you didn't chop my head off!
Yeah i always laugh at that especially when the dude just throws his head on the floor like "Take that shit back" LMAO. They simply just turned down the negotiation, but in the most barbaric of ways lol
How can Scott fluctuate from directing such great films like this, Black Hawk Down, American gangster, and Kingdom of Heaven... to crap like A good year or Body of Lies?
You should know, that after a while in battle, there was no line anymore. The Legions had a good formation. True. But do you really think that a good formation could resist a bloodthirsty army for a long time? If they would hold, the Legionaries wouldn't need the Gladius.
Theres some historical precedence that the romans were notoriously able to holding formation. They also focused heavily on line relief (the act of switching their front rank with the 2nd rank) However this is true, thats why the Marius reform was so important, they understood they needed to focus on physical training more.
I won't refuse the skill and bravery of the Gauls and the Germans however, nor their tactics, there were some notable leaders that could stand up to Romans.
As for who is a better individual fighters? Before the Marius reforms, the barbarians of course, afterwards? The training of a Legionary was intense, much more so then a Barbarian warrior, both sides had their strong points, however during their prime the Romans were unstoppable. late into the empire, barbarian warriors never stopped fighting for their lands, the romans did however (detailed in rise and fall in... way too much depth).
Just started reading through the random comments on here.
Historicly the Romans were the best trained and equiped troops, they used short swords not because they couldn't but because they were easiest to use in tight Legion formation. This movie isn't accurate on how they would fight, romans would fight a war in a line and systematicly walk foreward killing the enemy.
roman infantry weren't good melee fighters; they were group fighters. they relied on eachother. like I stab the guy in the back that's trying to stab you, you do the same for me. if a roman soldier was alone with a celt or a german or a viking, the "barbarian" would most likely win.
@19thepyrochilibean Not good melee fighters? The Romans lived for melee. They smashed their opponent's face with the scutum and stabbed them with the gladius. They fought in cohesive units that relied on discipline and training, but they were not any less tough. The Celts relied on over had cuts with their long slashing swords, this exposed their bellies to a stab from the gladius. Three inches of point is better than any length of edge. The point always defeats the edge.

@rtjeder Yea well my scrotum beats romans hahaaahaha. just kidding. ok anywyas. say a roman warrior was put in a cage with a celt. the roman would win. the romans didn't make big swords cause they couldn't. their shield shape and tactics. before the reformation, romans had small oval shields and SHORT swords. they were butchered by the celts.
true ers of the empire. no. If you did reasearch you';d notice the romans where driven out of roman or killed off and replaced by others reasurch more
the gladius was the typical roman sword, it was a short broadsword, generally 24 inches long, the spatha was the roman longsword, nothing hard about it
@fellinian mate, spatha was invented by the romans towards the end of the 2nd century AD when they found out how to do it from GERMAN and CELTIC blacksmiths. by the way, I'm North german, North scottish, and swedish ancestors. HAHAahahaa lol and germans still make better steel than you.
@caritoni lol u watch deadliest warrior? rajput indian soldier vs roman legionary.. if u are only talking about ancient/medieval soldiers the romans were only one of the best because a infantry with a gun can killa roman infantry
I don't think Hans Zimmer could have done a better job writing the musical score for this scene. Incredible. Inspiring. EPIC.
Plus, this is one of the best "sword-and-sandal" battle scenes in cinematic history, despite the total inaccuracy of the catapulted oil bomb explosions. They almost look like miniature mushroom cloud explosions, this in an age before gunpowder technology. I'm sure the Romans would have shit their pants if they saw an explosion like that.
@lifes40123 In 166 AD. The Romans were not trying to conquer the free Germanic territory in Central Europe, they respected the border (Danube and Limes). In that year the Germanic tribes of Langobards, Ubii and Lacringi attacked the empire because they were under pressure of Goths and other tribes from the North. The Romans fought back and temporarily conquered large parts of current Czech republic, Slovakia and Austria, but retreated after the death of Marcus Aurelius and never returned.
@Ayazidas *cough* *cough* the war between germanic tribes and roman already started 300 years earlier around 200 bc.... because rome was expanding and killing many german tribes that kept moving to gaul accros the rhine and the romans didnt like it so the romans started killing all the germans and went to their homelands to kill all of them...
@lifes40123 But we were talking about the specific conflict which inspired Gladiator and not about the whole history of Roman-Germanic clashes and wars. During the 1th century AD the Romans stopped their expansion northward and fortified their positions on Danube, Rhine and Limes. Instead of fighting they preferred to bribe Germanic chiefs. By the way, to call these ancient Germanic tribesmen "Germans" is quite misleading, they were not identical with the contemporary nation.
@DonChilenito i know...the use the tortoise tactic too much in football dont they....about time they switched to attacking football this coming world cup!
Germans have the wierd wooden horn things like belgians in asterix and obelix. Theyre pretty cool. And I too root for the germans, even maximus obviously respects them more than his friend does. There nothing more badass than defending your home enthusiasticly regardless of hopeless odds stacked against you.
Well in those times there were no such things as "countries". People often make this mistake. There was no nationalism, they were never proud to be "germanic" "roman", "greek" etc. People were essentially all slaves to their king, chieftan, emperor, etc. Who were supported by nobility.
I can see the lower classes being pillaged and raped by invading armies, but the only people that cared about power were the highest classes. Nobody went out of their way to fight for a king.
you described the feudal system that's not how it worked in ancient times. Civilizations were based on ethnic tribal groups. Even the Romans although they expanded outside of this model.
@NJRocks281 No, that's just silly. There was no "ethnic tribal groups". It was just tribes to the north, city states and colonies to the south. The greek and roman idea of "barbarians" was the culture north of the Mediterranean, that generally didn't revolve around architecture, monetary and naval trade, and essentially urbanization.
@NJRocks281 The only places where there wasn't this kind of system was Athens, where the first form of democracy was formed, and later in the Roman Republic... but both of these were minute in the whole time period.
Right, "nationalism" is a 19th-century construct along with racism, but this does not mean patriotism and xenophobia did not exist in ancient times. Quite the contrary: there are many ancient Romans who wrote about their suspicions of and frustrations with foreigners who they often stereotyped. Your description of people being slaves to kings and emperors sounds fitting for the Medieval period, but not for the ancient Roman plebs and citizenry, especially after the Marian reforms.
@EricMetalGuitarist SUre there was forms of patriotism in the Roman in Greek worlds, but that can be applied even in the Medieval age. The point is the patriots weren't the common people, soldiers etc.. they were the people in power. SO a very small part of the population.
People always asume this is enough to justify ancient patriotism as a whole which is ludicrous. The roman infantry/citizens didn't give a fuck about the 'honour of their country' or other modern ideas.
@irfanhandono Also, lifestyles were very different back then in times when people died early due to common diseases- as a soldier or noble it was quite the honour to die on the battlefield. Nowadays that's considered ridiculous.
The costumes I have to say are just awful, the legionarii use helmets that for the most part are from the English Civil War The lorica segmentata the legionarii use opens from the eides and not front and back. I fact the only good pieces of costume are the shields used by the legionarii and cavalry
everytime i watch this, i cant help but think of dead ringers

@fellinian mate, spatha was invented by the romans towards the end of the 2nd century AD when they found out how to do it from GERMAN and CELTIC blacksmiths. by the way, I'm North german, North scottish, and swedish ancestors. HAHAahahaa lol and germans still make better steel than you.

Still, what a bad ass scene!

speaking as someone from England, The Romans are like the middle classes and the barbarians are like the working classes.

It's so sad.
They had no chance, and probably knew it.
The romans had better weapons, better position and the better strategy.

@lifes40123 Actually, the Germanic tribes started the war in 166 when they invaded the empire.
Ayazidas 1 year ago
@Ayazidas 166 bc or ad??? the germans attack because the romans were trying to take their lands
lifes40123 1 year ago
@lifes40123 In 166 AD. The Romans were not trying to conquer the free Germanic territory in Central Europe, they respected the border (Danube and Limes). In that year the Germanic tribes of Langobards, Ubii and Lacringi attacked the empire because they were under pressure of Goths and other tribes from the North. The Romans fought back and temporarily conquered large parts of current Czech republic, Slovakia and Austria, but retreated after the death of Marcus Aurelius and never returned.
Ayazidas 1 year ago
@Ayazidas *cough* *cough* the war between germanic tribes and roman already started 300 years earlier around 200 bc.... because rome was expanding and killing many german tribes that kept moving to gaul accros the rhine and the romans didnt like it so the romans started killing all the germans and went to their homelands to kill all of them...
lifes40123 1 year ago
@lifes40123 But we were talking about the specific conflict which inspired Gladiator and not about the whole history of Roman-Germanic clashes and wars. During the 1th century AD the Romans stopped their expansion northward and fortified their positions on Danube, Rhine and Limes. Instead of fighting they preferred to bribe Germanic chiefs. By the way, to call these ancient Germanic tribesmen "Germans" is quite misleading, they were not identical with the contemporary nation.

@Ayazidas u call them germanic thats german too... i dont know any of the germanic tribe's name..... franks? goths?lombards?? saxons?

Why do I feel sad for the Germans, not the Romans...
Is it because the Germans are the ones who being colonized by the Romans, and they are strugling for their freedom...?
irfanhandono 1 year ago
@irfanhandono You shouldn't feel sorry for them because they deserve to be conquered
Teaohdede 1 year ago
@Teaohdede No, my friend. No one is deserved to be conquered.
Imagine if your country is the one which is being conquered, and you are working as a slave. You don't want to be like that, do you.
Well, in this case, it has happened, so nothing can we do to change the past.
The good sides are, at least the Germans became smarter and more civilized than before the Romans conquered them.
irfanhandono 1 year ago
@irfanhandono Under Rome everyone deserves to be conquered
Teaohdede 1 year ago
Well in those times there were no such things as "countries". People often make this mistake. There was no nationalism, they were never proud to be "germanic" "roman", "greek" etc. People were essentially all slaves to their king, chieftan, emperor, etc. Who were supported by nobility.
I can see the lower classes being pillaged and raped by invading armies, but the only people that cared about power were the highest classes. Nobody went out of their way to fight for a king.
atheniandp 1 year ago
you described the feudal system that's not how it worked in ancient times. Civilizations were based on ethnic tribal groups. Even the Romans although they expanded outside of this model.
NJRocks281 1 year ago
@NJRocks281 No, that's just silly. There was no "ethnic tribal groups". It was just tribes to the north, city states and colonies to the south. The greek and roman idea of "barbarians" was the culture north of the Mediterranean, that generally didn't revolve around architecture, monetary and naval trade, and essentially urbanization.
atheniandp 1 year ago
@NJRocks281 The only places where there wasn't this kind of system was Athens, where the first form of democracy was formed, and later in the Roman Republic... but both of these were minute in the whole time period.
atheniandp 1 year ago
@atheniandp
EricMetalGuitarist 1 year ago
