I meant how big. I live in the Boise Idaho area and our growing season is shorter and I'm always looking for a way to lengthen the growing season. Thank You
@mailman4662 Its not really a farm. Its a mobile home park, and I'm using the undeveloped part to do the gardening stuff. A lot of the property is hilly, not good for gardens. I think a hoop house woud do great for you as far as lengthening the season. You gain a few weeks in the spring, and a few in the fall..thats another 6 weeks of growing..problem solved. :-)
Nice detail to your video! Kinda makes ya wonder, if you built two deep ditches between the wood shed hoop house and one of the greenhouses, could you use the heat it produces with all that dark wood getting heated getting heated by the sun and use it as an additional heat source for the green house/s. Can the wood hoop house also be used as a wood dryer in the summer?
@mediamaker2000 Not sure about a wood dryer. I think green wood would dry better if it were stacked and fully exposed to the weather. Of course, I could be wrong. As for the ditches and mud stuff....you are just determined to have me create a huge mess. I reckon you'd like to bring that monster truck down here and tear up the place. At $40K, I'm guessing it stays put !
@Veggiepatchinperth Haha...as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I aint much on drawing, but ya'll get the idea. Yes sir, cold weather will be here soon. Gotta be ready.
Thank you for sharing!! You made that look very easy, I'm lookin to build two hoop houses one for my use and one for the neighbor on her property she loves growing Orchids and always talked about how if she only had a greenhouse...so I spoke ti her a few times about it and she wants to do it... And thank for pointing out the difference in the plastic wouldn't thought of that good thing before I spent not only my money but my neighbors.
Thanks for 'splainin' the construction procedure, Bobby. I'll use this for my first trial greenhouse this fall. (Think: SMALL!) Watch for my videos of the experience.
I like the water level , makes me want to toss my lazer level in the trash , haha , good stuff Bobby , those car ports as you say would make a nice kit for the not so handy handy man , another great post...!!
@bowhunter2439 With this level, you can go around, over, under, and thru... just gotta watch those air bubbles. Most any type of frame would work for a GH/ HH. Looking forward to seeing what you and Ash come up with. Thanks Bow.
Awe Man! You stole my thunder...lol I was going to do a water level vid...lol I use food coloring to help make the water more visible...Great Vid Brother.
@mainbearing68 Yea, I've used coloring before, but after a few months, the tubing takes on the same color and its harder to read than clear water. The best thing to use is the pink RV anti-freeze, especially in mid-winter when its 20 degrees and you're trying to set a house. Thx !
@mhpgardener Yes I had the same problem, however, with me being on the cheep, "FC" was the way to go.. I only needed it for one project, when I later decided to use the tubing for something else I discovered it to be all gummed up inside(lol). I love the idea to use antifreeze. God Bless
@GospelTruth37059 Uhhh....maybe he just went for a walk ? ;-) That was Robin, one of 2 grey cats that we have. They were originally Batman and Robin. Until we took them to be fixed. Turns out, Batman was actually Batgirl ! She's so sweet that we took it one step further and call her Bat baby. :-)
@dianemummvideos Thx Diane, Just the thought of having dry would makes me feel much better about this winter. I like the wiggle wire too. Its a quick and effective way to get the plastic secured.
Very good Bobby! "Wiggle Wire" so much more fun to say than "Wire Lock" :-) I'm glad you closed in that one end. I've had those things almost come out of the ground when both ends were open (I guess it works like an airplane, with the lift, etc) You're going to have a GH collection here soon!! (did you get the package btw?) Mel
@MelodeeRose Thx Melodee. Hehe, Oh yea, gotta do the wiggle. Its just more fun ! This is a better frame than my first one, so not too concerned about it taking off. I'll strap 'er down if I have to. I didn't check the mail today. I'll make sure to go to the PO tomorrow. BTW, the Heinz tomatoes are looking great, kicking butt. Already got a few babies coming on. ;-)
@MrMunchiemo For the GH, its basic 6 mil GH film. I'll be switching to 6 mil IR/AC soon. The IR helps retain heat, and the AC is an anti-condensate coating to lessen condensation. A local GH supplier would have it, and its available online at lots of places. If you have trouble, let me know.
BTW...Have you seen this video? (Type in Tons of Tomatoes). This old guy does some "original" things to his tomatoes. He does some really good splainin too! Enjoy!
@TheSonoman1976 Yes sir, I've watched both parts several times. I like his setup, the multivitamin, and the pile of Epsom he puts at each plant. He's old school, and knows what he's talking about. I respect that.
Would you happen to be in southern VA? I am in NC near Raleigh...you need to post a calendar so that I can plant my veggies when you do and try to keep up :) I have a small, raided bed garden. We all need to learn how to grow our veggies in this economy. I sure wish Ronald Reagan was here to turn it around like he did in the 80's. Love the videos. God bless!
@TheSonoman1976 LOL... lets see. I'm planting cabbage, broccoli, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes ,cukes, corn ,beans, squash.....sometime around Christmas ! Thats the greenhouse calendar ! Outside, I start with taters and onions around March 10th. I think even Ronnie would throw his hands up at the mess we're in. No way out, the numbers don't lie. Buckle up, gonna be a bumpy ride. ;-)
@TheOntarioGardener So what do you think about wrestling these days Jake? Well, I think.... It doesn't matter what you think ! LOL Yep, I watched it too, every Monday night. Kinda grew out of it though, thankfully. Holler if I can help you with anything.
@mhpgardener I couldn't give an accurate thought on wrestling these days. Back in the late 90's, and early 2000's, during my high school years, I watched all the time. Right in the hay day of the Monday Night Wars was the best wrestling I have seen, ever. The way the story lines worked and everything. Also, where I grew up was right outside of Philadelphia, which is where ECW wrestling began, and took off. That was my favorite.
@baconsoda It takes a lot of time and effort to put a video like this together. Comments like yours make it all worthwhile. Glad you feel...not too bad, LOL
Hey Bobby, great vid .You gave me an idea when mentioning conduit bender . Years ago I Built an ice fishing shanty ,2 man . Built frame on 2x2 framed on plwood on floor sides were made 1/2 conduit made like tv trays ,2 of them hinged on one end each . Threw plastic tarp over worked great with coleman lantern for heat left down wind side little open to keep fishermen alive.lol I think this would work for small gr.house ,purlin down the x and pitch top little and with ridge pole. What ya think
@TheSemperfidude Its gonna come down to how rigid you can make it. Too much movement and the wind will be a problem. But a combination of wood and conduit should be pretty sturdy. You'll know the first time a storm blows thru ! ;-)
1744 worth every min . ha ha you did great bobby . i think our long talk did us both some good ,working on getting our lumber for ours , you have set a high bar for us , thanks for everthing ....mountainman
@mmlrc6atgmailcom Thank you sir. Theres just so many different ways that this can be done. Lot and lots of options. When you figure out the exact dimensions, let me know. I might have some extra GH film. ;-)
I always hesitated when it came to a hoop greenhouse, because I never liked the way the hoops were connected on the sides, and I LOVE THIS!!! There is no way that is going to come out, or get loose. I'm going to try this one out for sure. Thank yo so much for a really great explanation of how it's done. Best yet! Bless, Sheila
Very nice!! I knew you should narrate for me. LOL You do such a great job. Great idea your wife has for starting flower seeds. You never did show us your fountain and arbor all planted. hint, hint
@loislaney23 Narrate? Me? I'd have them asleep faster than a double dose of melatonin ! I did some recording of the flower garden a few months back, but never finished the video. It turned out quite well. I have a lot of stuff that I never finished. Maybe I could do a compilation video of incomplete videos, hmmm. ;-)
This has got to be one of the most informative videos I have watched on YouTube in a long time! I love the detail, the drawings, the hands on, the explanations, etc. Give yourself more credit though, while divine intervention is great, it also takes a lot of planning, hard work, and patience to produce a well thought out video like this. This deserves way more then a thumbs up, but I'll just say thanks a million!
I used to cut my own trees (and run like heck when they fell the wrong way), split the wood (and cuss like a sailor when the axe got stuck) and stack it (and run like a cussing sailor when the stack leaned too far and fell) when I had a woodburner.
I gotta hand it to you, your hoop house is fantastic! Excellent video.
@Praxxus55712 Thanks Ray. With the trees, I always wanna have an escape route, just in case. And for me, an ax is just too light for splitting. Gotta go with a maul, get violent with the wood ! LOL
Wow great instructional video... and great idea. Thanks so much for showing how to do the bracing. Love the wiggle wire.. I will be sure to stick my tongue out....lol. Have a good one!
@OutWestt1 Thank you! Sometimes ya gotta really concentrate, put forth a little more effort....the tongue is a sign that you mean business ! Kinda like Michael Jordan headed to the hoop, tongue a wagging, LOL
@TheClownCentral A hoop and plastic, how simple is that ! The smaller ones work great on raised beds. We didn't have any hoops growing up, but we'd take tobacco sticks, make a teepee, and wrap it with black plastic. You talk about hot in there, whewwwww!
lol...I'm always bite-n my tongue...dual purpose- when the woods gone in the spring,U could use it as a plant starter.( U prob don't need a starter but, hey, more the merrier)
@ttitanic121 Well, I got a feeling my wife would be more than happy to load it up with flowers. But not store bought. I'll try to grow some more from seed, just to pretty up the gardens a little bit. ;-)
@MarinePrepper I worked on this idea for over a week. The first version was a lot of talking, I even bored myself. So I trashed that idea. And then, as often happens, God provides me with a better way to get my point across. This woodshed idea just popped in my head, seemingly from out of nowhere. But I'm pretty sure I know where it came from. ;-)
@DwayneEParsons Thx Dwayne, as you know, it wasn't what I had in mind at first. I trashed the that idea and waited for some divine intervention. I like this idea much better. It pays to be patient. ;-)
This is great Bobby. Thank you. You always come up with the best ideas and I like how you explain everything in detail. A lot of us will be using this information. Thanks for sharing.
@chicagocindybuddie Thx Cindy. I'm trying to give as much info as possible, so folks can decide if this is something that they'd like to do. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it.
i used somthing similiar when we heated our house with wood ive been looking round here for a green house just to use to start my garden earlier usually round here ya can get the hoops fer free if ya keep an eye out of course that was before i decided to get one
@rdnkrfnk I got a 14 x 96 frame with the channel and wire for $300 back in the spring from a fella on CL. But you're right, its the CL jinx. Soon as you decide you want one, nobody wants to sell.
@mhpgardener these ones i spotted drivin around and the plastic was gone on them n they just gave em away i helped my buddy take one down he uses for chickens
@texasprepper2 It was supposed to be 14 x 20, but I cut it down to 19 since I was using 20' plastic. I needed a little extra on the ends to pull it tight. Always thinking ahread. ;-)
thanks for the tips bobby, greatly appreciate the time. i get scrap 2x4's from wood spool reels. odd lengths, but i think i got it figured out and almost have enough for an 18x40 greenhouse... gonna try that bag growing trick of yours for maters and peppers. thanks again.
@Hard2HandleRandall Sounds like a plan to me. Whatever you make the frame out of isnt too big a deal. As long as you have good plastic and get it secure, you should be ok. Make sure you post some videos. I wanna see it. ;-)
What youre doing to the sides, is my plan for my little baby hoop house. I want to be able to lift the sides so i can get ventilation. Even during the winter down here in texas it will get up to 60 in the day. I used closet pole to secure the plastic so i can roll up the sides and hook it into a bracket.
@itsjustdeb579 Theres all kinds of ways to do it, just depends on what materials folks are most familiar with. Thats good thinking on the ventilation part. It gets a lot hotter than folks realize, even in the winter. Looking forward to seeing it when ya'll finish. ;-)
@mhpgardener Me too... I'm just waiting on the plastic. I debated hard about the home depot stuff.. then decided to go ahead and order the uv plastic.
This is something Ive been looking into for the hoop house we will be building this winter. It may not work for you or it might. I now you have your barrel stoves. Ive been looking into a Rocket mass heater for our green house. Ours will be running east west, so this will be perfect to run on our north side, for the whole length of unit. From what I can find, its uses only 10-20% of the wood, and will increase soil temp as well.
@jplerwill I've got the barrel stove working by thermostat right now, really cuts back on the wood usage. The rocket stove is intriguing. I've seen Pauls videos. I'm still waiting for someone to actually incorporate that stove into a 40' greenhouse. Hopefully you'll be the one. ;-)
Great job I really like the water level. That should keep the wood dry as well as continuing to dry any that wasn't quite seasoned. I can see clear greenhouse plastic next year and something growing in there.
@dalecalder2003 Thx. I bought a digital water level years ago, thinking it would be better. The homemade one was much more reliable. Further drying was part of the consideration since we've had so much rain in the past month. I had the top covered kinda decent, but not the sides. Hahaha....yea, once the wood is gone, I'm sure something will be growing in there. Probably flowers ! :-)
That is so cool I love the level what a smart idea. Ok so where do you get hoops and wiggle wire. Don't have the time for growing in a green house at the moment but I think it would be smart to have the materials on hand for when the need arises. Blessings!
@BexarPrepper Thx ! To get "hoops", its either buy a kit, or make your own. To DIY, I'd go with 1 1/2" pvc conduit. Its fairly flexible, but has decent strength. Having the material on hand just in case would be a great idea. Once something bad happens, materials might be hard to get. The channel and wiggle wire are available from most online GH suppliers.
@stevesmitty79 Thx. I don't like these long videos, but I don't know any other way that I can cover everything. Hopefully I've given folks enough ideas to get their own greenhouse started.
@gloorbit It really depends on what its constructed of. Heavy steel hoops are best, but they aren't cheap. But even a lesser frame will hold up if you strap it down, as evidenced by my first one during the hurricane.
@mhpgardener I guess I'm wondering more about the plastic than I am about the frame.
BTW: You're a good man. I've been watching and I've seen what you are doing to take care of the locals. Keep the faith brother. We need more folks like you.
@gloorbit I would spend a few extra bucks and get 6 mil greenhouse film. Its gonna be much more clear, and most of it is good for 4 years. This cheap 6 mil stuff I used is opaque, and will be brittle as paper by mid summer. Thanks. Up late? Nah. just 11:30 pm east coast. :-)
All we do here in NL canada to cover our firewood is put a tarp over it and tie it down, works great and only costs 2 or 3 bucks! Although your way at least its more hidden and not such an eye sore :)
@GardenNewbie Thats pretty much what I had, tarps and plastic. With the wood stacked so unevenly, it was a mess keeping it all covered. Yep, not an eye sore now, kinda cute !
I meant how big. I live in the Boise Idaho area and our growing season is shorter and I'm always looking for a way to lengthen the growing season. Thank You

@TheClownCentral A hoop and plastic, how simple is that ! The smaller ones work great on raised beds. We didn't have any hoops growing up, but we'd take tobacco sticks, make a teepee, and wrap it with black plastic. You talk about hot in there, whewwwww!

lol...I'm always bite-n my tongue...dual purpose- when the woods gone in the spring,U could use it as a plant starter.( U prob don't need a starter but, hey, more the merrier)
ttitanic121 4 months ago
@ttitanic121 Well, I got a feeling my wife would be more than happy to load it up with flowers. But not store bought. I'll try to grow some more from seed, just to pretty up the gardens a little bit. ;-)

Thanks so much I been checking a couple times a day for this one, thank you.
MarinePrepper 4 months ago
@MarinePrepper I worked on this idea for over a week. The first version was a lot of talking, I even bored myself. So I trashed that idea. And then, as often happens, God provides me with a better way to get my point across. This woodshed idea just popped in my head, seemingly from out of nowhere. But I'm pretty sure I know where it came from. ;-)

Great Vlog You make it look fairly simple by way of your detailed hands on splaining...keep up the great work Bobby!

@StatenIslandSlim Thx Joe, maybe I shoulda dressed up in a caveman suit? So simple a caveman could do it !

Thanks for sharing.
chicagocindybuddie 4 months ago
@chicagocindybuddie Thx Cindy. I'm trying to give as much info as possible, so folks can decide if this is something that they'd like to do. It can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it.

That way way cool you made it look so easy : )

@Planting81 It really is that simple. A piece of cake !

i used somthing similiar when we heated our house with wood ive been looking round here for a green house just to use to start my garden earlier usually round here ya can get the hoops fer free if ya keep an eye out of course that was before i decided to get one
rdnkrfnk 4 months ago
@rdnkrfnk I got a 14 x 96 frame with the channel and wire for $300 back in the spring from a fella on CL. But you're right, its the CL jinx. Soon as you decide you want one, nobody wants to sell.
mhpgardener 4 months ago
@mhpgardener these ones i spotted drivin around and the plastic was gone on them n they just gave em away i helped my buddy take one down he uses for chickens
rdnkrfnk 4 months ago
Sweet !
How big is it... or did I miss that ?
texasprepper2 4 months ago
@texasprepper2 It was supposed to be 14 x 20, but I cut it down to 19 since I was using 20' plastic. I needed a little extra on the ends to pull it tight. Always thinking ahread. ;-)
mhpgardener 4 months ago
thanks for the tips bobby, greatly appreciate the time. i get scrap 2x4's from wood spool reels. odd lengths, but i think i got it figured out and almost have enough for an 18x40 greenhouse... gonna try that bag growing trick of yours for maters and peppers. thanks again.
Hard2HandleRandall 4 months ago
@Hard2HandleRandall Sounds like a plan to me. Whatever you make the frame out of isnt too big a deal. As long as you have good plastic and get it secure, you should be ok. Make sure you post some videos. I wanna see it. ;-)
mhpgardener 4 months ago
What youre doing to the sides, is my plan for my little baby hoop house. I want to be able to lift the sides so i can get ventilation. Even during the winter down here in texas it will get up to 60 in the day. I used closet pole to secure the plastic so i can roll up the sides and hook it into a bracket.
itsjustdeb579 4 months ago
@itsjustdeb579 Theres all kinds of ways to do it, just depends on what materials folks are most familiar with. Thats good thinking on the ventilation part. It gets a lot hotter than folks realize, even in the winter. Looking forward to seeing it when ya'll finish. ;-)
mhpgardener 4 months ago
@mhpgardener Me too... I'm just waiting on the plastic. I debated hard about the home depot stuff.. then decided to go ahead and order the uv plastic.

@itsjustdeb579 You will not be disappointed. Excellent decision !

sorry, paulwheaton12 channel has some good links to this type of heater.
jplerwill 4 months ago
This is something Ive been looking into for the hoop house we will be building this winter. It may not work for you or it might. I now you have your barrel stoves. Ive been looking into a Rocket mass heater for our green house. Ours will be running east west, so this will be perfect to run on our north side, for the whole length of unit. From what I can find, its uses only 10-20% of the wood, and will increase soil temp as well.
jplerwill 4 months ago
@jplerwill I've got the barrel stove working by thermostat right now, really cuts back on the wood usage. The rocket stove is intriguing. I've seen Pauls videos. I'm still waiting for someone to actually incorporate that stove into a 40' greenhouse. Hopefully you'll be the one. ;-)

Great job I really like the water level. That should keep the wood dry as well as continuing to dry any that wasn't quite seasoned. I can see clear greenhouse plastic next year and something growing in there.
dalecalder2003 4 months ago
@dalecalder2003 Thx. I bought a digital water level years ago, thinking it would be better. The homemade one was much more reliable. Further drying was part of the consideration since we've had so much rain in the past month. I had the top covered kinda decent, but not the sides. Hahaha....yea, once the wood is gone, I'm sure something will be growing in there. Probably flowers ! :-)
mhpgardener 4 months ago
That is so cool I love the level what a smart idea. Ok so where do you get hoops and wiggle wire. Don't have the time for growing in a green house at the moment but I think it would be smart to have the materials on hand for when the need arises. Blessings!
BexarPrepper 4 months ago
@BexarPrepper Thx ! To get "hoops", its either buy a kit, or make your own. To DIY, I'd go with 1 1/2" pvc conduit. Its fairly flexible, but has decent strength. Having the material on hand just in case would be a great idea. Once something bad happens, materials might be hard to get. The channel and wiggle wire are available from most online GH suppliers.

I live in a really windy area. What wind speeds will these type structures withstand?
gloorbit 4 months ago
@gloorbit It really depends on what its constructed of. Heavy steel hoops are best, but they aren't cheap. But even a lesser frame will hold up if you strap it down, as evidenced by my first one during the hurricane.
mhpgardener 4 months ago
@mhpgardener I guess I'm wondering more about the plastic than I am about the frame.
BTW: You're a good man. I've been watching and I've seen what you are doing to take care of the locals. Keep the faith brother. We need more folks like you.
P: you're up late, no?
gloorbit 4 months ago
@gloorbit I would spend a few extra bucks and get 6 mil greenhouse film. Its gonna be much more clear, and most of it is good for 4 years. This cheap 6 mil stuff I used is opaque, and will be brittle as paper by mid summer. Thanks. Up late? Nah. just 11:30 pm east coast. :-)
mhpgardener 4 months ago
All we do here in NL canada to cover our firewood is put a tarp over it and tie it down, works great and only costs 2 or 3 bucks! Although your way at least its more hidden and not such an eye sore :)
GardenNewbie 4 months ago
@GardenNewbie Thats pretty much what I had, tarps and plastic. With the wood stacked so unevenly, it was a mess keeping it all covered. Yep, not an eye sore now, kinda cute !
