  • God, those runs at 2:15... we're playing this in orchestra right now, and that is by far the hardest part of the movement.

  • Played this song in junior high. It was one of the funnest ones ever. Mrs. Tuke you rock!!

  • Most amazing and beautiful piece, by Gustav Holst!!

  • @megavore97 Zimmer and Badelt were going for a jig and did base the Pirates of the Caribbean main theme on this, so they should feel similar. The Pirates theme is also loosely related to theme from Crimson Tide, which Zimmer scored in 1995.

  • @redsoxdieheart05 well aren't you a genius.

  • its actually an easy song

  • Reminds me of the pirates of the caribbean theme song, but maybe it's just me.

  • @megavore97 I know rite? every time i hear this piece especially this movement i think of pirates and sailors

  • This music proves that soundtracks are based on classical music. This feels like a track from a score of a fantasy movie. I love it!

  • fantastic peice saint pauls suite

  • if i tried to play at this speed i think i would die.

  • @myrtlemaddness It`s in C Major, so it`s much easier than you`d expect. I played the St. Paul`s Suite a bit ago, aand it is actually the funnest thing ever. You should look for sheet music on IMSLP, just to try it :))

  • @myrtlemaddness It really is easy. The entire orchestra just seems to pick up on the spirit of the piece and pushes it to full throttle. The hardest part about this piece is actually NOT rushing, even for the bass and cello.

  • @ZephImmortal

You're right, and this is actually a LOT of fun to play.

  • @megavore97 I second this notion ♥

    ;D

  • I'm a classical music fan. Therefore, I love this!

  • I'm a metal fan.. But i love classical music!!!!!

  • <3

  • I love it.

  • My hat off to Gustav Holst !!!

  • Holst is definitely one of the top ten or at least one of top twenty composers. The reason, of course, that this is never acknowledged in academia is that he's not German. This is the only reason for this. A piece this beautiful is proof that he belongs up there with the greatest.

  • Had the best time playing this!!!

  • I just played this today with the school orchestra...

amazing piece and really fun to play...

too bad I'm the only viola player vs. 6 celli and 9 violins... -.-

but the viola part is soooo great!!!!

  • @ParadiseQuestMangaka lol same with me at summer camp, the lone violist.

  • @ParadiseQuestMangaka agreed, at least I have 5 really good violists in my school orchestra, and we all love this piece!

  • which orchestra is this recording?

  • i love this song. AND I CANPLAY THE VIOLIN ONE PART!

  • I can tell he wrote The Planets :P

  • this is an absolutely beautiful piece of music. the different moods of the Jig blend from one to another beautifully.

  • Amazing like this if you agreee

  • you know this is written after my school, st paul's where he was our music teacher for ages!

  • @CLEZM that's so cool!!! my school and my orchestra is good but has no such history. :(

  • The 5 people that disliked this are Bieber fans.

  • @Valoe7 You are totally correct!

  • This is my favorite version that I've heard, but I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know who performed and who conducted this version?

  • musical genius

  • Finally found a decent version of this on youtube!

  • We sightread the first movement... We ended up doing the Dargason instead, but those triplets that climb higher and higher are evil xP. Great piece though.

  • @crazybworganist Oh, they're fairly easy, really. It's just a finger pattern. 321 432 432 shift down 321 321 432 432 shift up 321 321 432 432 shift down 321 321 432 432 shift up 321 321 432 shift up 321 and boom, you're done!

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • I love this piece

  • St Paul's Girl school

  • He taught at my current scwl and one of my music lessons is in his study! =D

  • I remeber my concert when we played the whole suite it was very awesome loved it the only i didnt like that much was the ostinato which i still liked

  • I am so excited, we're playing the ENTIRE St. Paul's Suite for school. I am in love with the entire thing.

  • this an awesome song i saw some orchestra play!!!

  • this amazing i remeber playing this when i was in 6th grade hard but manged it

  • Such awesome Viola parts no joke

  • and everyone thinks us violas dont matter but really with out us the orchestra is thrown off balance

  • @TrueColours044 AMEN!

  • amazing song!!! our class played dis for a concert

  • This Gustav paints the most beautiful musical pictures. and as a musician he writes some of the more fun stuff he's on my A list

  • Who doesn't like Holst?

  • I am playing this for all-state orchestra.

  • i remember playing but everyone was like no we dont want 2 play the ostinato because second violin like had the same thing the whole time i played the cello

  • Ha, they wouldn't know. Cello always has the SAME THING all the time (see anything by Vivaldi). Go Cellos =P

  • lol, my class is playing this...@___@ crazy triple death zone at 2:15 is a killer to play! xDDDDD

  • @animeloser138 agreed. Imma have to practice this piece like hell.....though my teacher will slow it down cause.......ugh thats really fast lmao

  • EHHH im playin that :)

  • yeah!

  • My favorite Holst work. Such wonderful religious fervor mixed with a smattering of Celtic influence!

  • @Lukecash12

actually, there's nothing religious about the origin of this piece. Holst wrote it to express his gratitude for the St. Paul's Girls School, where he conducted.

  • The jig brings back good memories from Honor orchestra.

  • bravo gustav is a guineus

  • @redsoxdieheart05 you are not

  • @redsoxdieheart05 he's a world record XD

  • i had to play this today for some college workshop. my favorite part is the jig. i like the ostinato too, but i know i wouldn't if i was a second violin!!!

  • all suburban 07

  • we are gonna play this at school :) i have played it outside of school.. the cello part.. amazing!! haha

  • i love playing the viola part in the st. pauls suite, we are given something on our own to do! haah so people can see how much better the viola is to the violin.

  • My teacher gave us St. Paul's Suite to learn over the summer. I must say, I love it but the first movement scares me. lol. Well, the sheet music (for Violin I) scares me.

  • We played this song for State Orchestra, and got 1s all across the board.

This orchestration is much quicker, though, and I still love it. ^^

  • I am going to play this song at camp soon and I just got the music for it. I am addicted to it.

  • which camp?

  • National Philharmonic Camp in Maryland

  • Though it is written hery many times, I must write it again: I LOVE it !!!

  • damn it's great

  • i heard this song live and now im addicted to it :)

  • I can never listen to a song without thinking, "How could I arrange this for band/orchestra/etc?" This would make such a good band arrangement. Now if I could only find a good F/OSS notation editor...

  • From 2:06 to 2:39 was that part of the jig or the ostinato?

  • Jig's part :)

    Ostinato begin at 2:55

    (sorry for bad english)

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • I realised today that Holst spent most of his days in my hometown of Hammersmith, London. I would never have thought it ... now, I must listen to 'Hammersmith' and 'Brook Green'

  • A good friend of mine recently informed me that Holst was the music teacher years ago at her old school in London, St. Paul's...I flipped out, but turns out it was true

  • omg i thought thebassgirl08 was me and i was like whos hacking my account?? but yeah omg i played it too but we didnt sound nearly this good. i love the piece though. this is too weird....

it brings back memories coz that was my first time playing there

  • I play the cello and let me say I'm not big on praticing... I have other things I need to do... but I happen to be really good at it. When I do practice, I love to play this song! We played it for all state festival a few years ago. It's really fun! especially fast like this!

  • holy shiz naps...im never gunna be able to play this...we go at like 100...and what is this at like...250?? ahhaha but i love this song so much!! even if i cnt play for teh life of me :p

  • I LOVE THE END TO THE JIG

  • I'm playing this, it's ok, but I have to play the ostinato and it makes my fingers ache after the first few bars.

  • I love this! We played the first movement last year - it was so much fun!

  • The first movement notes are simple, but it's quite fast. :) I'm playing it now for Jr. All State and it's really fun!

  • this remindes me of pirates of the caribbean for some reason......hmmm

beautiful songs, i'm playing them in my high -school orchestra.

  • I WAS THINKING THE EXACT SAME THING!! with the pirates of the Caribbean...haha

and playing them in high school orch. as well =]

    Nice =))

  • lol, haha i know.

  • This song is amazing!!! Im considering playing either movement 1 or 4 with my quintet. Im a 2nd, so I saw the Ostinato and was like..No. Not at all.

  • haha, who doesnt

  • are you OUTRAGOUSLEY CRAZY.

THE STOLK can compose like no other

i will NOT let you call this the best piece ever until you have heard EVERY bit of my four SYMPHONIC MASTERPIECES.

    STOLK OUT

  • shut up your gay

  • no perry, it is you who is gay my friend.

this isnt a mesterpiece such as my neoclassical tango.

i have been hailed several times as the worlds best.

ALL ON BOARD THE STOLK TRAIN

  • I hope your trail de-rails.

    your music sucksss

  • sorry for the thumbs down PerryDubya... I thought you were talking about Holst...O_O... Don't take Stolk seriously... he's joking.

  • So am i... but still its pretty self rightious of him to talk like that kidding or not

  • This piece is beautiful

  • God, I love all of this! x3 I miss playing it... (I still can play most by memory) I wish I had scanned the sheet music... >.>

  • my orchestra is playing this.ima freshmen. this song is new to all the freshman and my teacher told us we were playing this song 8 days before our concert. the freshmen have to learn it in those 8 days. we're only playing movements 1,3 and 4.

  • Have fun with that! haha You're lucky you guys cut out the second movement though. We had to play that and your hand starts cramping up so bad if you're a second violin

  • yeah. our concert went great though! but it kinda sucks cuz not only did we play this, we played barber of seville, highlights from wicked, and radetzky march. barber is like insanely hard. but im glad we didnt play the 2nd movement. it looked hard

  • Ooo wow. Yea we played barber last year. That would've been a fun concert to listen to. haha Not so sure about playing it though

  • it went reli well so im happy. when we first got the music for barber i was like there is no im going to be able to play this. but after we learned it i was so happy i could play it.

  • i swear if i get arthritis later on its because of that movement

  • Lol Same here!

  • yeah, that's right! i'm second violin, and my left hand dies at the Ostinato, but it's so great when it's sounds good!!

  • I played that too but I was fine because I would just shift from first to second position if my fourth finger hurt, then shift back to give my first finger a break so I only had to worry about my middle and ring finger.

  • Im playing all 4 movements at my orchestra's concert in 2 days. I love this movement! I'm playing 1st violin part

  • ya we played this last year in my high shcool orchestra...well the jig we played this like perfectly and got a 1st mainly because of this

  • i heard the composer of the pirates of the caribbean theme song got some ideas of the first mvt

  • My orchestra's playing this!!!! :)

  • i'm playing this song in my high school orchestra, we're gonna be playing the whole song, all 4 movements, in a few weeks for a concert. can't wait

  • Good lord...that must have been a tiresome song! I was tired after the first movement in my school.

  • Dzięki tej suicie pokochałam Holsta

  • Played this at Carnegie Hall. Amazing song.

  • I play this song in my high school orchestra (only the first movement however). I'm a second violin. I was practicing it today and wanted to hear professionals play this. It's an amazing piece. It's cool to see how it all fits together.

  • Ha! you think the first is bad, the second is absolute hell for 2nds

  • well, it's not this bad... most of the time you just play 3 different notes xD

  • Which is precisely why it's hell.

  • I agree. It is worth hearing... Of course, I'm a viola.

  • Yay for viola part! x]

  • i love da jig!!! it rocks:)the viola part rocks:)

  • ;D I LOVE THIS SONG!

We're playing the Jig in orchestra for our final concert this year its so awesome! Know anywhere I can download this song?

  • This is meant for a school orchestra

    Yay!

  • Great! Who is playing this does anyone know?

  • We played The jig in the orchestra I was in last year and this year in the orchestra Im currently in our teacher decided to go through the whole thing...all four parts, we got sick of the piece though...but ostinato isn't that fun for seconds violins, for almost that whole movement your playing the same three notes...blech.

  • But... but isn't it just lovely listening to the solo???

  • It is...you mentioned how it was meant for a school orchestra...Indeed it was...and we all were excited cuz we though it was four a school in st.paul mn, which is by us...but it was written for a girls school, somewhere else. So then we were sad. Then we had to start playing so we got over it.

  • yeah but 2nd part still sucks

  • I am playing this in my high school orchestra along with Jupiter. Holst is amazing!

  • Anybody know which orchestra this is?

  • dude...see, THIS is what its supposed to sound like!! i've listened to several posted videos of Jig/Ostinato/Finale, and they've all SUCKED. i played this in october, and we ROCKED...it sounded just like this :]

  • no one plays it in sticcatto.

  • you're supposed to tho...notice, this isn't an amateur group or high school or something performing this...it's a pro group that recorded it...trust me, i have the cd

w/e...it's one of the most BRILLIANT pieces ever written for string orchestra :]

  • nice recording, can u send it to me please? Our orchestra is playing this part now.
