  • what are their Fran times?

  • Whatever happened to the "Gun rigs"? Saw the Wellington School run this weekend but everything seemed miniature!

  • @rodentum44 Wellington run with smaller gun Barrels, Carriages and Limbers, the rest of their kit is full sized. In fact they use some of the exact same equipment that was used by Portsmouth, such as the 28 foot and sheer legs.

  • Just been to Chatsworth show and seen a much smaller scale, seen it live numerous times, definitely needs to be brought back!!! And I'm ex-army!!!

  • We are doing this at our cadets but on a much much much smaller scale :L x

  • The Olympics..prepare yourself for the embarrasment... "and here come Hackney borough councils youth worker brigade"....Urrrrrgh God... the shame.

  • I should have put this in my last post but in my generation everyone at any school I knew went to the Royal Tournament, and was amazed by this, the mast, the RAF dogs and all other parts we also went to HMS Belfast, The Mary Rose, The Imperial War Museum, Duxford or Old Warden, saw red arrows, Tigermoths, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancasters and Concorde. All of these subtle recruiting grounds and instillers of pride and a sense of history if nothing else. Now only Top Gear can get away with it.

  • The pride and purpose in the march to Hearts of Oak, the drill at the sound of the G note, it brings tears to my eyes. I hate this country but I love my country.

  • To all politicians: wanna be popular? Want people to love you? want a real votewinner? BRING THIS MAGNIFICENT SPECTACLE BACK!!!

  • Fking hoorrahhh for the Royals! Doing a smashing job serving us and providing some of the best entertainment available all round!

  • Now THAT! is entertainment. B******s to all this BGT crap! Society doesnt know what's good for it anymore

  • In about 1972, when I was a CCF cadet, I had the honour and privilege of being taken to watch the Devonport team practising for this event. Before we were taken to the practice ground our officer told us that we might hear the odd "cuss" word. He'd have been more accurate if he'd said we might hear the odd NON cuss word. It was a fantastic experience and one I'll never forget, it was brilliant. Watching real men with an array of bandaged limbs throwing heavy stuff about as if it was nothing!

  • @gaz772u thanks for the correction, good on you, wish i could of done this when i join up.

  • @gaz772u moronic sod of a government ! Its disgusting!

  • Realistically all the Navy had was the Field Gun and they disbanded it. That was effectively the end of the Roysl Tournament because for all the marching bands, the highlight of the show was the Field Gun. It will never be replaced because it was a unique event of guts, fitness, teamwork and commitment. You can't buy those things and the guys running were some of the best you will ever meet.

  • The thing to consider is how many ceremonial duties and staff do the Army have. How many marching bands etc? What about the Royal Air Force, again several including the Red Arrows.

  • It was stopped when Tony Blair was in power but he did try and save it (vocally anyway). It was stopped by the Armed Forces themselves due to Government cutbacks and a lack of staff to run the Royal Tournament.

  • okay, please excuse the ignorance, but why was this the "last" of this race.. What happened to the Royal Tournament? what happened to the race? Where can I see it? And if this is truly gone from our nation's proud history.. Who made that decision?

Thanks for a detailed reply :)

  • They should bring it back for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics!

  • the field gun competition was running every year of my long service . broke my heart to see it go , more gutless back peddling by our spineless government ! . bring it back and with it the senior services pride !

  • WAFU -With A Fieldgun Unbeatable

  • I keep coming back to this particular video over and over. Better, higher quality footage exists elsewhere on Youtube, to be sure. But the conciseness of this particular event, the all out emotion of both athlete and crowd, the matter of fact dryness of the commentators. All of it is underlined by what he said at the end, "No penalty points," pointing to a flawless almost photo-finish ending. A friend posted it, and at first it looks like a simple race. Then they go over the wall...

  • @yorktown99 Forget cricket, soccer, and rugby. THIS is a national sport for England.

  • @yorktown99 It was an honour to run that night, one of the proudest and saddest nights of my career...c'mon the Air Arm!!

  • @TheDrummerboi94 what , Both teams are FAA...? - both teams are wearing the bands.

  • @incongra woops my bad, i just wouldn't of thought that gaffa tape around the left arm would be that meaningful tbh

  • @TheDrummerboi94 no probs to be honest I think every single tiny detail has deep meaning,

  • Too bad it's died out. Glad you posted this video! Sure looks easy to get hurt doing this!

  • Another great tradition gone. All thanks to the British government.... Enemies of the people

  • Thanks for uploading this. My dad was in the Fleet Air Arm for 22 years, he bloody loved this. My godfather ran it for a few years too. Remember watching this 'last one' in 1999, I felt angry that it was being stopped, though I know the reasons behind it.

It's just the perfect example of what teamwork really is, sport in it's purest sense. Makes me proud to be associated with such a fine tradition. Well done, lads.

  • SOMEbody is going to put an eye out...

  • Last ? My Arse It's Not !

  • I have never forgotten this heart-stopping competition. It was a travesty that it was ever abandoned. There is going to be a bit of a re-creation of this in a new military tattoo some time soon I think. Seeing it live is better than watching it on TV because television in those days just didn't convey the amazing thumping and rattling of equipment as those bloody guns were manhandled over, through and around those obstacles.

  • that was amazing!

  • I had the good fortune of taking part in a few a training sessions with Pompey down in their shed at Whale Island back in 1988/89,i was only 16,did the mud run with the sand bag round me neck...fantastic experience...Toughest sport in the world.

  • I fear this cannot be saved. See, someone might be offended....Traditions, well sure but soon you will have new traditions and they wont involve anything like this. Instead there will be lots of praying on your knees facing a certain way.....

The works we know is changing very fast, yes were efed.

  • @urizon41

I had to give you an up in that I agree with what you said, but I want to give it a down in that it's crying shame.

  • @urizon41 Being an american, how does this offend someone???

  • That gave me chills.

  • Compatitions like this are so much fun to watch, the skill and timing is impressive.

  • Also are there any vids of the climbing of the mast (I know they stopped doing that too but I love it)

  • Bit of a random question but I went to The Last Run and remember a very appropriate and not very politically correct (thankfully) funny rant by Rowan Atkinson based on this subject! Bought the video and surprise it wasn't on it-does anyone know if there any way of ever seeing it again-tried you-tubing it but no luck so far?? Love seeing the comments from the guys that actually ran it!!

  • This used to be the highlight of the year watching this at Earls Court, fantastic to watch. I wish they would still do it. Big respect to the Royal Navy Field Gun Teams, great post thank you

  • This was the last ever run of the command field gun competition held at Earls Court.

What they call field gun now use to be the old brickwoods field gun competition.

Which is completely different, and some what easier.

We were wearing black arm bands to mark the end of this terrific sport.

  • @incongra... I'll gladly answer...I ran for the Fleet Air Arm 4 times including this Final Run. (and I still have all my fingers)! ...Basically the Field Gun wasn't directly stopped. It was the Royal Tournament which ceased in 99 and the gun crew was a casualty. The real problems with field gun is / was the lack of manpower, it was getting more difficult to release guys from units which were already short plus our overseas commitments increased the problem.....hope this helps

  • this is intense, only the british could do something like this, and this is probably the toughest sport on the planet. simply amazing

  • @hybridtechowns I ran as part of this last ever run...it was the saddest night of my 22 year career....and running the Field Gun were some of the proudest moment. The British Military Tournament is coming back to Earls Court this December, unfortunately the full Command Field Gunning you have seen will not be there but the young men of Wellington College will be running the same course but with a lighter gun and limber...they do so well, considering the youngest is 13 years old..only in Britian!

  • Well, it brought this grown man close to tears (and very few things do that). I have very fond memories of going to several tournaments with my parents and grandparents. I don't think I'll ever forgive the "then" government for allowing the Royal Tournament to be cancelled.

With all the crap they wasted our taxes on they could have kept this going so the public would be able show their appreciation for our amazing armed forces... an appreciation that politicians clearly lack.

  • i was there

  • A complete disgrace that this proud tradition was stopped. Politicians in this country are a disgrace. Back of the box Portsmouth 88 and 91. Ring a ding ding!!

  • @VIPvillas1

news is that it's being revived with a new tournament this December but I doubt it will live up to any of the previous ones.

  • I watched this as a kid and loved it now I'm in the team training on hayling island. Its the best thing I have ever done! Were keeping it alive we need your support.

  • This is pure British Navy Excellence. Royal Tournament, British commonwealth Pride. Belongs to the whole nation. what a performance. Thank you for posting.

  • Great memories from my 23 years in the RN. Living in the USA now. I just wish I could get the people here to watch this so that they could understand what the words tough, teamwork and guts really mean.

  • Excellent display of team work and tradition!

    Respect.

  • I did field gun yesterday but it was junior leaders but lookin at that i thought wow this is incredible. Like one of the guys said forget soccer or Rugby this is the ultimate team sport and this is coming from a rugby player.

  • goolge pafg - porstmouth action field gun.....

  • Posrtmouth Action Field Gun are on Hayling Island... google pafg

  • google pafg (Portsmouth Action Field Gun) it's new home is on Hayling Island!

  • Im sorry but im very high while watching this. W T F IS GOING ON. WOW

  • i'm so proud of my brother doing the field gun at Wellington collage :) They are the only school to do it, and they have completed it in 3:32 last week. which is very impressive for a bunch of school boys. A boy of only 13 is in the A team. And anyone going to this coming royal tournament, WELLINGTON WILL BE RUNNING THE FIELD GUN. I am extreemily proud of my brother for what he does. I really do recomend people to come and see this spectaular performance by them :)

  • doing the brickwoods at collingwood again this year, can't wait, always watch this video before i do at, i know its not the same, but it is the drive i need to take it ok , its still tough, even if it isn't quite the same

  • holy..how the hell do people do this?lol..thats crazyy

  • I dont give a damn who you are this is impressive

  • Holy cow! Amazing...

  • forget your football rugby or anything else. This is the ultimate team event.

  • i went to the last royal tournament. unfortunatley i was too young too take it all in but watching this makes feel proud that the Royal Navy had such a tough competition. Only the British could cope with this!

  • This was one of the most amazing sporting race I have ever seen! It was great.

  • Makes me proud to have taken up gunnery.

  • My old man (dead and gone now vet) was in Pompy division and even as an old man would never miss the chance to cheer on his home team tough guys in a tough event bloody disgrace to do away with it

  • @trackend it was a sad momment indeed.

  • I watched the Portsmouth team duiring a public training/practice session. It was one of the most terrifying things I've seen, though I'm not sure what was more terrifying:- What the men were doinging or the men themselves. Glad they are on our side ....

  • As an American and a Civil war reenactor (artillery) here in the states I can't imagine doing this! Our full scale guns are about the same weight. You have a great country and I hope there is someway to save this tradition. Thanks for all your country has given mine.

    Tom Boyte El Mirage,Arizona USA

  • @cawboybutterball10 I concur, this must be preserved.

  • Awesome. I loved going to this as a kid.

  • this brings some memories, WIG's, BOST, polishing 2 deck at 3 in the f*** morning, the carnage in a 52 man mess deck after suicide leave in Gib. The older I get the better it was :)

  • bring it back!!!

  • My wife and I took our Godson to the Royal Tournament when he was 12.

He is 21 now and in the RAF.

Seeing this clip brings it all back.

Curse the Labour party and all the rest of the Do gooders and H and S brigade for stopping this wonderful show.

All we get now is the X factor!!!!

No contest in my book, the Royal Tournament is the best entertainment you will find ANYWHERE.

  • bring back the gun run and every other tradition they have taken from us ! health and safety my arse !

  • Wish they would bring it back, i could do with the work !!!! God they were smashing times.

  • does anyone know wally rutherford who was in the navy from 1960 to 1970 and took part in the royal tournament gun race. he sadly died on the 3rd october this year and im trying to piece together his time in the navy many thanks

  • Some of you seem to be under the misapprehension Tony was 'left wing'. The Tournament wasn't 'modern' enough- Did what he said he would - keep on with Thatcherism. We don't need manufacturing- we only need Banking and Commerce, and alledgedly this made us look too 'colonial'. Because we all know how wonderful the bankers are!

  • My old man took me to the tournament when I was a nipper. He was flight chief on Naiad or Phoeobe I think at the time, back in the 60's. It was my privilege to take my own sons to the last one too. Bloody magic! Fly Navy! ;-)

  • I went to "The Last Run" it was quality! I went with my church.

  • PS: It was the last of the true Command Field Gun Runs at Earls Court.

It can only now be seen as an exhibition run at Pompey but doesn't involve running against Devonport and Fleet Air Arm.

The only other competition involving a gun is Brickwoods Field Gun which doesn't have walls, ramps etc and is held on a car park...nuff said!

  • @gaz772u

Did they stop it because so many people were losing fingers and getting hurt?

  • Cheers for the post Incongra, we ran the 'black armband run' 10 years ago this month...I remember every step of the run for the Fleet Air Arm...proudest thing I ever did...shame the spineless Labour government ruined it all!!

  • what has happened to this country god help us all xx

  • As the crews enter the arena the march being played is Hearts of Oak. Because of the Labour Government, with it's left wing views, Britain's finest men of The Royal Navy can no longer compete in the toughest race in the world.

Because of this, and many other disgraceful acts on our brave service men and women, I, an Ex Royal Marine, have moved to the other side of the world and live in The Philippines where respect and traditional values still exist.

  • Can't believe this no longer takes place! Another part of our tradition gone. When he was in the Navy my Dad told me the men training for the gun run were on double rations and had to run everywhere! I remember watching this as a child. I loved it along with the "climbin the rigging"

  • It was the highlight of my childhood I've always respected these lads. If we had it today perhaps the military would have a greater releationship with the general public but alas our Great labour leadership decided to scrap it !!!! Disgrace!!!!! GOD BLESS ALL YOU BRAVE MEN!!!!!!

  • A most fantastic spectacle for the armed forces to show off their fitness, teamwork and detemination. An absolute disgrace that any Governenment were allowed to get rid of it on a 'cost cutting' agenda. Bring it back.

  • I used to love watching this on the telly. Its a real shame its not shown any more.

  • when the gun was run they got sponsorship . Which coverded there wages. And lets face it , the officers still kept "music of the night!" a musical performance for the oriffices in plymouth! how fair is that

  • Jst watched this with my 9 year old, he wasn't born when Iran this, he couldn't believe it wh he saw me in this video!! He kept saying WOW and sat there with his chin on the floor! I really miss this and it should never be forgotten, the men who ran this were amazing individuals, from ALL three crews! AIIIIR ARRRM!!! C'mon the green team!!

  • Fair play to you, glad you enjoyed it.

  • @incongra At first i didnt really understand what i was watching, but after they took that first wall and erected that zipline my jaw dropped.. (im 28.. age is not a factor for awesomeness). Great tradition, a shame they're killing it. Stuff like this builds Men.

  • You've got my respect !!!!!!!!!

  • @12matmoir

I didnt even know this existed, Jesus Christ it looks like it hurts O_O

  • @12matmoir

I watched this very tournament when I was younger... bloody fantastic

  • @12matmoir Good on you Mate, proud of your service. I saw this at the Royal Tournament when I was a Lad, a tradition that should continue.

  • lets hope after all the conflicts are over & a CHAINGE of GOVERNMENT "something we feel they really don't know about "governing" !! the Tournament resumes & a fresh start to our nations pride prevails over this gloom n doom atmosphere

  • and spelling is learnt again by all involved in our glorious nation ;)

  • I have noticed after looking at many Oxford Quotations, that during that time period the spelling system was still in flux. They often use u instead of v, so haue instead of have, and ie instead of y. What other spelling oddities were there? Wouldn't it have been hard to read, if many words had multiple spelling, even within the same work? get a life!

  • Makes me proud to be an Englishman!!

  • The public's favourite event, a team challenge that ANYONE in the Navy could aspire to and Government arseholes binned it.Should hang their heads in shame. They've managed to ruin every aspect of the Services over the last few years. We'll have bugger all left to be proud about soon. Still, we'll always have the memories. Thanks to all the lads at the Tournament over all the year, still pissed off you got the best scran though, don't you know how demanding DHP is!

    Terry McCormack

    38 years RN

  • how come they binned it health & safety by any chance?

  • No the Brickwoods version is still run. They simply decided bin the entire Royal Tournament. No place for imperialistic relics in Blair's Cool Britainnia don't ya know.

I hope somebody grows a pair and they bring the proper Command Field Gun Run back at the Windsor Tattoo.

As good as the Brickwoods is, it 's not a patch on the CFG.

  • I agree mate, best of luck and power to the teams that run in the Brickwoods competition or whatever it's called this year, but it's not the same. Wouldn't it be sound if the 'non-fat', the full version of the field gun competition were to reappear. I think we need a change of government first though, one that backs our lads and lasses up all the way...

  • Dam right there mate!!

  • Just the bloody government mate, 'saving money', or 'not representing the face of the modern Navy', some crap like that. I'm sure 'elf n' safety had a look in there somewhere. Probably thought our 'field gun' competition would upset the 'pacifists' or 'tree huggers' or something. Whatever their spineless decision. They buggered up one the public's favourite annual shows of strength, spirit and determination that our armed forces used to have before these traitors killed them off for good. Turds.

  • yeh ive noticed the current governemnt sees the armed forces as nothing more than unnecessary expenditure.

  • So true mate...

  • i say sack the gits as they made a right f*ck up of normal life too! lets hope the next lot bring it back as a punch in the nose for this lot

  • I absoluely agree Telmac The field gun run is or Sadly was a Great British armed forces tradition and the BLOODY GOVERMENT KILLED IT!! Shame my Dad my brother always sohuted for Pompy on the day it wa sa great day out goin to the Royal Tournament and to see the Field gun run. My Brother joined the Royal Navy in 2002 and left after six years service and was on Board HMS Edinburgh D97 Type 42 Destroyer. He was a Radar Operater.

  • Well, in all fairness the forces are a bit stretched right now, and if it's a choice between the Tattoo and a few more bits of armor for the lads and lasses in Afghanistan I know which I'd plump for. But come peacetime, by all means it should come back.

  • I agree but when we hear of billions of £ being thrown on virtual support for our naboures & our own people & countries needs ignored or at best given a patronising speech & an insulting throw of petty cash it makes you wonder about the loyalty of our leaders & the way they run the budget for the UK? It is after all why we are complaining about the neglect of our forces?

  • That is 'Junior Leaders' field gun and even more a step down from Brickwoods. No box down or wheel changes.

  • No they are holding a brickwoods tournament big difference..

Windsor Tattoo though is bringing back the Field Gun Run.. woo hoo

  • hms collingwood will be holding a field gun tournement on the 12 june. with guest teams from network rail and local collages. i'll be running in it

  • You mean June 6th?

  • I was there, great bunch of yads

  • This bunch of traitors called the Liebour government who stopped this must be shot.

  • This is fantastic - always the highlight of the Royal Tournament. We went every year with my dad who was ex-Navy. Disgraceful that this was scrapped - my dad died 15 months ago having never been able to take my children - they (and he) would have loved it!!

  • Full respect to all Gunners......yes, even the Fleet Air Arm!!! Go Portsmouth!!!!

  • Better than Ballet!

  • amen to that, couldn't agree more,

  • What pisses me off is the fact the politicians can find millions for third world scum to come here and sponge off us whilst stabbing out armed services in the back. They can find Billions to shore up incompetent bankers. But keep a proud national tradition that shows Britain at its very very best NOT A CHANCE!

    Go Navy GO!

  • How right you are, I did 26 years in the "Andrew" including the Falklands, I dont understand how we allowed this once great nation to get so fucked uo in such a short time.

The younger gegeration are sleepwalking into a national disaster soon it will be to late to recover anything of any worth.

  • Holy shit these guys are legends!

  • Shame on all you who voted labour.

  • shame all this came to an end by politicians just because of money, when mp's claim ridiculous amounts for expenses. shame on mp's. Lets have a vote (militery display teams) or mp's having slap up meals.

  • Tony Blair scrapped the Royal Tournament. It's as if he didn't want the military to continue to exist. He shat on out servicemen and women every chance he got, and then sent them into danger.

  • GREAT, GREAT

  • *nobody

  • *their

  • Like the movie for it's nostalgia. In 1972 the first year of a 2:40 run by Pompey, we did runs like this each time we met Fleet Air Arm at the court. Guz were still a bit behind with thier drill in those days.

We won all the cups in 75, and 72 crew was a vintage year. The Waffoo's were great too.

A sad indictment to the trainers, that noboday did a sub 2:40 in the following years.

  • Hmm spare in 08...the field gun stopped in 1999...hence the last run!! The crew? you mean Brickwoods..

  • lol my mistake :( i meant to type 98.. no pal not gay brickwoods give me some credit..

Mac macshane was the 2nd trainer in 98 which is why he was 1st trainer in 99. but thanks for pointing out my small but very relevant error in typing.. if u check google maps the fleet air arm track is now the caravan park on culdrose "very sad"

  • Brilliant good to see The Men Of Air take glory, Was in the crew as a spare in 08 fond memorys of some of the best bunch of guys i've ever come to have known. The theme nites were some craic :-) D Gibson

  • bring back the field gun run...

    so say all of us...

  • i didn't realise it was no more - how very sad! I say bring it back too, my kids would love it! I did. x

  • It's truely a sad thing when whey faced politicians destroy the history and traditions of fighting men.

I pray one day this great spectacle shall return to it's former glory.

  • Wow some faces there i haven't seen in years from the FAA. Good job lads still makes me feel really proud of the mob and another nail in the coffin thanks to the bean counters.

  • Hi Gaz, I will say hi for you, yes "Doc of Air"is still lifting scabs for the pusser, but only for another 3yrs.

  • Aiiiiiiiiiiiir Arrrrrrrrrrm!!!!

  • What a race! That was amazing!

  • We do this every year at wellington college with a lighter gun but it really does make close friendships and an amazing sense of teamwork.

  • Great to see. I was at the last run and it was great they should never have stoped this.

I ran for Devonport in 1977 'A' Crew (Flying Angel)(Mick Harvey)when we won all five cups first time ever. I would be interested if anyone has that video of that run at the Earls Court. I must ask Big Baz Sowden as I know he has one but no sound, so if anyone has it let me know.

  • Hi, we have got a copy of the "last run" which was sold at Earls Court video, which we are hoping to transfer onto DVD

  • i lived in plymouth for 16 years and remember the navy days...the field gun crew at devonport were awesome. so sad that the government dont see how it inspires true team work to overcome all obstacles.thank you for the video.

  • How can government stop such an event? I've not seen it in such glory at The Military Tattoo but i've seen it twice at my local naval base HMS Drake, In Devonport, i used to love watching the field gunners why did they have to stop such an event? Is there Any way it can be brought back? As its been said on every field gun vi i've watched on youtube, 'Its a tradition since gone 1907'

  • pafg co uk are still doing it ! ! !

  • Thank you for posting a tradition that is not seen anymore on the televison,I loved watching the Last Run again, it was really funny when i suddenly noticed my husband stroll by in the video, he was the medic for the Fleet Air Arm team.

  • Muffy70

Is the 'Doc of Air' still lifting scabs for the pusser?...say 'hi' for me...gaz of air 1999
