I think Steve has quite a good instructional technique. What you don't see in the video is the parts where the participants try out what Steve is teaching.
sorry but some of those moves will get you killed. Also how does showing moves on someone just standing there and not doing anything at all show effectiveness? I am sure he's great. Judo is one of my favorite martial arts especially kosen judo but I don't understand what the point of this demo was?
@Ilanactingreel I reckon this demo was designed to show how effective simple, quick techniques can be when you know what you're doing. That last one - breaking the arm - would end ANY street fight instantly. I suppose vids like this also help to sell courses, videos etc - and isn't that a part of life?
@Ilanactingreel Obviously this is a demonstration for a group of people with little or no martial arts experience. It is common sense to show a technique in isolation before adding resistance and context.
aliveness is the foundation of survival training. I do believe that there is a need to understand the movement before training it live but at least they should have shown some aliveness in the demo.
Is this the first day of a "self defense class"? Steve definitely knows what he's doing, but all the people there are goofy, giggly ass clowns being "entertained by the show". Quit laughing and pay ettention people. You're wasting everyone's time. STFU and learn something.
to all of you that think the aikido is bullshit...the techniques for taking the knife of, the nikkyo on the wrist an d bunch off all those techniques are actually aikido techniques! Almost whole these demonstration is the same what would you see in the aikido class!
@redwarrj1 off course...daito riu aikijutsu is the source of all aikido styles...I practice aikido and BJJ...for me this is all the same art...maybe not technically but philosophically the same...I just want to point out that anyone who make comments that some art is better than the any other doesn't know sh*** about martial arts at all...
Who REALLY gives a fuck where it came from? Just like in history, it's written by the winners. Hell, for all we know, jesus could've invented all of these way back when and they got changed. Shut the fuck up, and learn something useful, such as Jiu Jitsu. Aikido is useless.
@1codcod Cure me of what? knowledge? If you are in fact a History teacher, first off, congrats to you. History is very hard to learn, and even harder to teach. Secondly, this is bullshit. No one is going to let you position your hands around their head perfectly and pull them back, especially if it's going too fast for them, and the swear will make their fingers slip.
@zacktillery Boy, don't talk to a Sensei like that, you don't even know how is fight on street, I tell you, I'm here thanks to the Aikido, Jujutsu, Karate and Kendo, those arts are arts designed to kill a person but now in these times where War is not a life way (maybe your american movies are like that), If you are so damn narrow minded you shouldn't be a Martial artist, Period. now go and hit your ego with a rock, maybe that's the cure of your disease which is Egocentrism
Who thinks that aikido is bullshit: if you can't kick or hit, you are dead. If you can kick or hit you have a small hmm yeah a litte chance to be successful. But Aikido and especially Aikikai are also train what is to do if you will kicked or hit by your enemy. The bad is that both don't attack you and ask yourself what is worser: an enemy who attacks you where you have to only wait to beat him or a guy who waits that you attack to trap you and to break your arm or your leg. Please remember this
@Korn033 slow down on your typing im a shity reader and had to read it 5 time to understand it lol... im not sure if your for or against here...but as to the question to ask ones self...its worse to attack someone that is waiting to trap you which makes aikido an affective defensive art..which is a good thing...im not a big fan of aikido but i dont think its bullshit
@REGtomcat1 LOL it is not difficult to read my english.^^ Anyway. I am for aikkido and for the guy in the vid. Good thing, that you don't think it is bullshit. ;-) Each fighting sports have disadvantages and advantages. Advantage of aikido it is really open and you can combinate it with other fighting systems and you are able to fight against many in the same time. But MMA or BJJ: Do a ground fight with one and the rest of the guys kill you. Otherwise thats the disadvantage of aikido
bjj was created by the brazilian judoka, the gracie bothers. AND what you see in this vid are AIKIDO moves in her direct execution. Sensei Morihei Uyeshiba develop Aikido for 100 years and concentrate it on big round moves to absorb energie and use this against the enemy. Why big moves? It based on the sword fights of samurai on the battlefield where you had to be able to fight against many enemies in the same time with a sword.
Damn. You are all wrong. The first art was jiu jitsu, used by samurai for unarmed fights or with knive "tanto". For many years they split this art in pieces and created the fighting sports that we know today: karate, judo, ju jutsu and aikido. Karate are only the kicks, judo are only the rest of the techniques especially throws, ju jutsu is a german open system and a collection of the best of all fighting sports and the only art that is in a permanently develop, bjj is special version of judo...
BJJ I happen to admire for its ground fighting capabilities but it lacks a true self defence. If someone came at me with a weapon the last place I would want to be is on the floor or if in a bar fight and the attacker was with a group of friends I wouldn't want to be on the floor. BJJ is a splinter of Judo the softer form of Jujitsu. BJJ is a sport and has rules if you learn to defend with rules how can you learn to defend a real situation if you can't say strike to the groin or eyes.
@iApna Yes BJJ is an off shoot of JJ. First Jujitsu then Judo and Aikido then BJJ. Judo and AIkido are the softer forms of jujitsu they are there to disarm and restrain an opponent. Traditional JJ is to kill or maim and uses various strikes. Its an unlimited martial art with no rules. Each technique is shown individually to learn the move. If you was in a real situation you would do the wrist lock as demonstrated then carry on with other techniques until your attacker cannot carry on.
This guy has just made me want to take up an art again, it's been 7 years since i practiced and i was only 2 away from my 1st dan (yes i know lots of people here claim to be 6th dan blah blah but everyone's got to start somewhere and i'm not a fighter)
Gave up because of commitments but with a few months i wouldn't be far off where i stopped and could start learning again. Thanks hardcore judo champion olympian guy! Inspiration!
many people mix up, Ju Jitsu and Jiu Jitsu, that are two different martial arts with different backgrounds. Ju jitsu is the art that samurai used to practice, self-defense. Jiu jitsu is ground based and it was developed from Judo, newaza.
Wow the professionalism this guy shows and his ability to make sure his test subjects aren't seriously hurt makes this look like aikido. Even though these moves could very well kill a man.
@adidas99adidas ammm nope the ground fighting in judo is ne waza, jiu jitsu (柔術) its a martial art originated in japan (there are some theories that jiu jitsu is from India) and from jiu jitsu judo was created and then a judo practitioner (Mitsuyo Maeda), then Hélio Gracie gradually developed Gracie Jiu Jitsu as an adaptation from Judo, as he was unable to perform many Judo moves.... Gracie Jiu Jitsu is now called BJJ
IN OTHER WORDS WHO WANTS TO LEARN FROM A GUY WIT HIS WORK ETHIC. I USED TO STUDY BUT JIU JITSU IS JUST MONEY MAKING SCAM FROM BLACK BELTS LIKE FATSO UP HERE WHO AFRE JUST TAKING YOUR MONEY MONTH IN AND MONTH OUT. I THOUGHT I KNEW WASSUP WIT JIU JITSU BY WATCHING THIS VIDEO AND PRACTICING THE MOVES DAY IN AND DAY OUT AND YEAH..... THEY DONT WORK I GOT MUGGED AND STABBED THEN THE DOCTOR TOLLED ME THAT THE IT IS NOT WISE LEARNING FROM GUY THAT DOES MOVES ON DEFENSELESS PEOPLE; RATHER THAN ACTUAL PEOPLE TRYIN TO HURT YOU AND YEAH THESE MOVES LOOK GOOD BUT YEAH THEY DONT WORK SO I FIGHT NOW VAMPIRE HUNTER STYLE AND I HAVENT LOSS YET I GUESS GETTING ATTACKED BY VAMPIRE METH SMOKING HOBO IS BETTER THAN THIS GUY
@TheRoach86 You sound like and idiot. "I got mugged and stabbed after trying these moves" Wtf were you doing? Just randomly grabbing peoples wrists? You bitching about what color belt you are clearly made you miss the point of jiu jitsu Its not rank its technique. Its you learning a martial art who gives a shit what belt you are. It took my 2 years to get my blue belt. Though i agree its about the money, i take the knowledge for my own self defense not for the belt
@TheRoach86 "I THOUGHT I KNEW WASSUP WIT JIU JITSU BY WATCHING THIS VIDEO AND PRACTICING THE MOVES DAY IN AND DAY OUT AND YEAH..... THEY DONT WORK I GOT MUGGED AND STABBED"
You weren't paying attention in the lessons were you? if someone tries to mug you with a knife, just give them your money, just hand your wallet over and later cancel your credit cards, anyone who gets themselves stabbed during a mugging is stupid
@YOUNGSMASH20 - Well not sure why they would bash JJ, but as far as I know BJJ is a derivative of JuJitsu. I agree that JJ is better for street defense vs BJJ but Gracie JJ is better. Even the Gracie's have mentioned that "Gracie JJ" is for street application on their website. Gracie JJ is closer to Ju-Jitsu but comes from Kodokan judo, which in turn is still a derivative of Ju-Jitsu. JJ was enhanced by Professor Kano and called it Kodokan Judo for political reasons and marketing, seriously.
@YOUNGSMASH20 - I am not bashing JJ from my last post. Let me explain, I always prefer to take the more modern approach to learning. JJ was root, then came Kodokan Judo, then Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Therefore, Gracie JJ would be the more modern approach to fighting. BJJ is just an offshoot for sport.
Note: Many MMA clubs market BJJ like mine but also teach GJJ. Its just easier to call it BJJ for marketing purposes. UFC is the biggest promoter of BJJ, so might as well use the free marketing right?
If I were to have experience in bjj do you think id be around the same rank/experience range in jjj? I like both and would like to do both but I think jjj is a lot harder to find, as for bjj it was easy as hell to find a place, been doing it for about 5 months if that matters at all.
@bigmanoooo1 I see your point, I like the self defense aspects a lot for their practicality and sport for the health benefits, I wrestle and do jiu jitsu so I figure jjj/wrestling style takedowns with bjj grappling? I guess it would depend, like they say you dont grapple in a knife fight
@bigmanoooo1 BJJ is a Combat art, self defense art, and a Sport. Its everything in one.Not saying its the best Im just pointing out what it actually is. Judo is pretty much only a Sport.
@The07ChargerRT i don't see how going to ground on the street is at all practical for self defense, one on one BJJ is a very worthy art for defending yourself however i don't see how it can be safe on the street where anything goes
@bigmanoooo1 Yea I said the same thing to a BJJ instructor. I said you never want to be on the ground in a street fight. He tried to put me down, but I told him anywhere the fight goes if I'm really close to you , you will go to the hospital. So he took me down like 4 times I poked his eye , hit his balls , and bit him , not hard though. He realised my point and said he would rethink the application toward street fighting.
@MindofaJedi My friends tried to grapple me a few times. Apparently they find it hard to get out of when you go into their guard with one knee crushing their nuts and one elbow crushing the windpipe. They can't stand when I hook my fingers around their windpipe and yank as hard as I can either. They call me a dirty cheater.
@ metalbullitt Look I'm really not trying to be mean or force my opinion down your throat but seriously lighten up some people have more of a lade back teaching style
and if it works it works p.s. if you really believed in humility then you wouldn't be flaming the other commenters (just saying )
great demonstration, people do grab wrists and jackets (especially if you are much younger and smaller) , these locks and takedowns are a good example of what to do without breaking out into a fist fight and done properly can end a fight before it starts
what are you on about? This guy is teaching a seminar to people who don't appear to be MA students. He is trying to make it fun, get them to have a laugh but also take on board what he's teaching them. He hasn't really been cocky or made anyone look an ass. He's not used the full technique on anyone, just a demo and if you notice, his partner is always smiling, he doesn't look like someone who was humiliated or made to look an ass....
@dronuk Demonstration or not, he has an arrogant/non sealant approach in applying his techniques (As if he was untouchable). You can have fun and teach without making your balls clink. FYI, the smiles the students have while being wrist locked are out of pain not pleasure. I would know as I study JJJ.
man, i hate people like that . this sensei makes everyone look like an ass. I am damn glad my sensei doesnt make me look like an ass when we have people watching ! XD
but to comment on this particular video, this sensei is a cocky asshole and I'd never study under him. Humility is VERY much key which he seems to have very little of.
Fair point. I take what I said about it back actually, better to know it than not just incase it does happen. I thought no one grabbed your shirt to threaten you in the real world but that did happen to me at the weekend, shocker tbh lol
@djeq721 Yeah, it is shocking. You see tons of stuff in a lot of ‘self defence’ videos and the like, and you think ‘that’ll never happen’, but it is surprising how often it does. You have to bear in mind that self defence isn’t about fighting.
@djeq721 In a fight, people will be swinging haymakers at your head - if you’re getting mugged, or somebody is trying to control you, or stop you from doing something, they WILL be grabbing you somewhere - shirt, sleeve - anywhere they can. It can be useful to know a few tricks like this for such situations!
Heas not teaching .. He's showing off , not impressed.

babyblack94 1 month ago
@bigmanoooo1 BJJ is a Combat art, self defense art, and a Sport. Its everything in one.Not saying its the best Im just pointing out what it actually is. Judo is pretty much only a Sport.

@The07ChargerRT i don't see how going to ground on the street is at all practical for self defense, one on one BJJ is a very worthy art for defending yourself however i don't see how it can be safe on the street where anything goes
bigmanoooo1 1 month ago

@The07ChargerRT but i will say that BJJ is probably the number one martial art for rape defense there is

For those or you who don't know what Roll means: To Roll in BJJ is to Spar. Hey they Spar in boxing too. Simple!
sacramentocruz 1 month ago
@sacramentocruz we "roll" in JJJ as well just so you know, where i train has regional tournaments in ground fighting

I'd like to see this guy Roll with a BJJ Black Belt. What a shame for him.

@sacramentocruz That comment is one of the reasons MMA gets haters.

@ metalbullitt Look I'm really not trying to be mean or force my opinion down your throat but seriously lighten up some people have more of a lade back teaching style
and if it works it works p.s. if you really believed in humility then you wouldn't be flaming the other commenters (just saying )

great demonstration, people do grab wrists and jackets (especially if you are much younger and smaller) , these locks and takedowns are a good example of what to do without breaking out into a fist fight and done properly can end a fight before it starts
stuartmac55 2 months ago
what are you on about? This guy is teaching a seminar to people who don't appear to be MA students. He is trying to make it fun, get them to have a laugh but also take on board what he's teaching them. He hasn't really been cocky or made anyone look an ass. He's not used the full technique on anyone, just a demo and if you notice, his partner is always smiling, he doesn't look like someone who was humiliated or made to look an ass....
dronuk 2 months ago
@dronuk Demonstration or not, he has an arrogant/non sealant approach in applying his techniques (As if he was untouchable). You can have fun and teach without making your balls clink. FYI, the smiles the students have while being wrist locked are out of pain not pleasure. I would know as I study JJJ.

man, i hate people like that . this sensei makes everyone look like an ass. I am damn glad my sensei doesnt make me look like an ass when we have people watching ! XD

@Daedalus294 i don't have sensei's I have a BJJ teacher...fucking having to call someone a special title...i'm paying them.

@nomilkforsanta Its called honor, respect and discipline asshole.
metalbullitt 2 months ago
but to comment on this particular video, this sensei is a cocky asshole and I'd never study under him. Humility is VERY much key which he seems to have very little of.
metalbullitt 2 months ago
@nomilkforsanta BJJ for the win, no bullshit just useful proven techniques.
MAZ1N00 2 months ago
@Daedalus294 This is because your sensei is humble, modest and respects his art...

djeq721 3 months ago
@djeq721 Better to learn some of this stuff, which you might actually use, than flying head kicks whilst dressed like Chinese circus performers.

@edsheadsaid
Fair point. I take what I said about it back actually, better to know it than not just incase it does happen. I thought no one grabbed your shirt to threaten you in the real world but that did happen to me at the weekend, shocker tbh lol
djeq721 2 months ago
@djeq721 Yeah, it is shocking. You see tons of stuff in a lot of ‘self defence’ videos and the like, and you think ‘that’ll never happen’, but it is surprising how often it does. You have to bear in mind that self defence isn’t about fighting.
edsheadsaid 2 months ago
@djeq721 In a fight, people will be swinging haymakers at your head - if you’re getting mugged, or somebody is trying to control you, or stop you from doing something, they WILL be grabbing you somewhere - shirt, sleeve - anywhere they can. It can be useful to know a few tricks like this for such situations!
edsheadsaid 2 months ago
@edsheadsaid
Fully agree :) - Although if they grab onto your clothing, that's were the randori comes into it's own
