Your hairstick technique is... interesting. It doesn't have to be that hard, y'know? With all the weaving I mean. Check out torrinpaige's hairsticks tutorial. :)

Ah, there's where I've been going wrong. Never realised you should put the chopstick through an extra bit of hair to keep it in place. Brilliant, it worked perfectly :)

Acctualy It's really comfortable:) You can leave it really loose so you can bearly feel it but it still holds you hair:)
