If anyone is interested why water and amonium expandeded when freezed....

Water (H2O) and amonium (NH3) are able to produce Hydrogen bonds, because they have a highly electronegative element (O,N) bonded to a Hydrogen atom in the molecule. So when they freeze they form a correct crystal (because of the hydrogen bonds), in which the molecules are farther away from each other than in liquid state. ;)
