Europeans were ruled by religion until the mid 20th century. Religion was just another form of control used by the government and the ruling class. Education allowed people to make their own minds up about religion, and the masses turned against it. Too much blood has been spilled in the name of one christian sect or another for Europeans ever to go back to the old ways, where the church ruled. The church blew it for itself by taking the wrong side, and getting involved with politics.

Europe has had a much different history than the US in terms of religion. Europeans dont view religion as some sort of benevolent force as some of the most horrific, vicious, & bloody wars in Europe were fought bcuz of religious differences. Americans don't understand that Europe is much older than the United States. Europe has seen the failures of religion in the past like wars where lots of people have been killed. That's why most Europeans today don't believe in God.
The churches are empty because people have come to realise that the idea of religion is nonsense. All you have to do is think. Most people don't. Religious people rarely know their religious text. In my experience atheists know more about religion than the followers. That is why they are atheist. The more you know about religion the less respect you want to give it. Europeans were ruled by religion until the mid 20th century. Religion was just another form of control used by the government and the ruling class. For example, In US alone, number of none-believers doubled in 10 years (ARIS pole). While half of the Europe are none-believers. Europe has had a much different history than the US in terms of religion. Europeans dont view religion as some sort of benevolent force as some of the most horrific, vicious, & bloody wars in Europe were fought bcuz of religious differences. It wudnt surprise me if someone said that the blood spilled in the name of relgion in Europe wud fill a small lake. The French revolution which rejected religion utterly, was a child of these wars. Modern attitudes in this light r easy to understand.

I'm a European Atheist, but I totally agree that the history of Europe would not have been as great as it is without Christianity. The Christians were able to keep out the Muslims since the dawn of the Middleages, and thus allow a culture of tolerance and peace to come to be. Just compare the modern Western World to the modern Islamic World. Tolerance of Atheism, or Science, or other religions (!) occured in European culture. Why? The Christian sanctity of family is key

In my experience atheists know more about religion than the followers. That is why they are atheist. The more you know about religion the less respect you want to give it.
