Simon's logic about the texture pack memory usage doesn't really work. It will use a bit more gpu memory but on modern day video cards that usage is nothing. It shouldn't affect normal ram usage in any way. If it does, it's just poor coding on notch's part.

Lol, you complain about lag when it's really not bad at all, I get 2fps (on far render) and 10fps (on tiny render) on Minecraft Classic because I run it on a Netbook which is all I was able to afford. I can't even run Team Fortress 2, and I average about 5 fps on Half Life 2 with everything set to basic graphics. :)
