@momodragon if jbmonsterma didnt answer the question u were asking, which sounds like to me hes talking about water cooling? seems to me like ur asking about the water touching the cpu while lapping it? if thats ur question, then no its not a problem so long at u only wet the heatsink part of the cpu, im not sure if there waterproof.
The best way to get it perfect is to use a sheet of thick glass & automotive valve grinding paste. Smear the paste on the glass in a small area & rub the heatsink on it with some downward pressure. It may take 20 minutes or more of rubbing back and forth to get it smooth enough. You may want to start out with some 1000 or 2000 grit sandpaper but no way would I used 600.
is it necesary to lap both units (cpu & heatsink ) to get improvements, or can i just lap my heatsink and still get some extra performances? i'd like to keep my cpu warranty :P
Rodney. Thanks for putting up with these morons here on youtube. I cant imagine what your inbox must look like on a daily basis. I shudder to think...
no. unless you go nuts on the 400 grit with a cpu!
i lapped mine and done it like this, 30 up and down motions not going round and round just one way, turn 90 degrees and 30 times turn 90 degrees and final 30 times, do this for 600/800/1000 grits but then on the 1500/2000/2500 grits do 30 figure of 8's and turn 90 degree on the the paper in the same space you have been going up and down, dont use water it clogs the paper, use dry and a dry paint brush if needed to brush the paper
I suggest that if you're going to do this you keep the little landing guard that the processor comes with in the box. Its usually a piece of plastic that the processor is snapped into (Intel is like this at least, don't know about AMD). It helps to keep any water from getting on the processor contact surface. Truth told though, a little water won't hurt it (because the whole housing is sealed) but you don't want to fire it up while damp. let it dry if it gets wet. True for all electronics.
@ChrisMurphy15 so long as it drys, as above any electronics can get wet, in fact soaking wet, if it drys fully and no residue remains then it would work fully
i dropped my phone down a street drain thankfully it had run out of battery in my pocket it stayed there 8 hours till the authority's came and retrieved it! worked perfectly after that
@ChrisMurphy15 Water will not hurt the cpu (unless it's plugged in to the board with power running to it). The amount of water that you use to lap (about 2-3 drops), will not harm anything, and by the time you're done the water will have evaporated. It's not like you're submerging the thing. You're just using the water to extend the life of the sand paper. Lay down a couple of drops gently set the CPU on top and start sanding (be sure to spread the water around the sandpaper).
Intel and AMD shouldn't add the nickel to the CPU. It's just a wasted of time when they know that you would get better overclocked and temp score with the copper is expose
Lapping isn't necessary for any CPU. Will it improve your temps? You bet. I forgot to mention in my earlier post that lapping a cpu also exposes the copper underneath the coating. Copper has the best heat transference characteristic of any metal, which is another reason why lapping helps temps considerably when done properly.
Ya its just that its not doing much with the surfaces that "INTEL" has for finsish products in their line of not so "FLAT" surfaced CPU's Its all in the nm's Nano Meter's :)
Mmmmm yep I did I-like-2sand paper my pins on da CPU :P daaa huhieee :) by way you know I'm kidding right? .... :| Who in ta hell would do ....... "BLANK" you fill it in oh oh wait I know Bill BLANK lmao ha ha just joking Bill. G ates my chips lol later
First off, you lap a cpu to get it flat (like nsx1 said), it getting smooth is also fairly important but not as much as getting the IHS flat.
Secondly, you will definitely need way more than 2 sheets of sandpaper. Get 4 220 grit, 1 or 2 400, 800, 1 1000grit. Taking it any higher is pointless as it doesn't improve temps. Another important aspect is making sure your heat sink is also flat. If not, lap that too and you'll see a tremendous temp decrease. Mine dropped 15C. 720BE/Tt BT lapped
TY man this sounds really helpful I just got done lapping my HS the wrong way I took it ha ha in my left hand lol n' took the sandpaper in other and just started going at it oops lol my bad I thought what the help it coudln't hurt the way it looked before was bad enough :D so meh I hope it will be ok any way I have to try out my new PC tower and MoBo. Peace.
The water keeps the sandpaper cool, and helps it clean itself so it maintains a better sanding surface. Basically it extends the life of the sandpaper.
You keep saying "smooth"... it is NOT smooth that you want (i.e. my ass is smooth), it is "flat". You want it flat. But the mating surface must also be flat in order to achieve the best thermal conductive transfer of heat. So you should also lap the CPU.
Hey i lapped my PS3 CPU and GPU, and the heat sinks. Worked a treat its holding better temperatures and its quieter. XBOX owners should do the same...
don't think you can remove the cpu/gpu from the xbox. I've never tried but I don't see how you could, all I did was cange thermal grease to artic silver mx2
I didn't remove the cpu/gpu either. I had manufactured a sanding block out of an old AMD heatsink, lapped it firstly, then got into the IHS with that. Not the best way but it got the job done. The heat sinks were removed and done on a glass top.
yea, I did it on my e8500, but I'm waiting to buy my core i7 next week. I just had to RMA the MSI eclipse plus :(! One of the pci express 2.0 slots was broken. Anyone know what I should buy?
The goal is to get lowest temps as possible for overclocking, 3 main factors in this process:
-Airflow in the case or watercooling
-Aftermarket CPU cooler (for air)
-Lapping
Those that spend the extra for watercooling, and/or case with airflow/CPU heatsink/fans will take the time to lap the CPU and CPU cooler for added lower temps.
It all adds up, and thus better overclocking rewards.
It would have been great if you could do this and show us rodney..the information can be availed from anywhere...but getting it on youtube means u kn see d solution ...
Unless you just ran around a high voltage "carpet?" touching the cpu pins does NOTHING.... contrary to popular belief. anti static bags & wrist bands are useless unless you work at as a carpet installer.... or are a robot with a grounding problem...
also, what many people don't know is that using a dremel buffing tool works faster BUT you need to let the surface cool down about every 20 seconds it will be mirror smooth in about 2 minutes if you don't f*** up...
i have a few questions. 1 i have a intel celeron 420 can i lap it? 2 i have 5 pieces of sandpaper but there not dif grits. 3 of them are a very fine 220 grit, and the other 2 are 100 grit. can i just cut the sandpaper so i have like ten pieces and then lap it? or do i need the other grits for this to work? thxx
with 220 grin you can do someserious damage. Make sure it's "wet or dry" type of sand paper (you can find it at local auto parts store.) Start with 400 grit, then move on to 600, 800, 1000, 1500, even 2000 if you wish.
It varies from user to user. Some people say never go in circles some say never use wet sand paper others say you must polish it with a 1500 or 2000 grit paper when done.
1. Do NOT spray water on the sandpaper. It is not neccesary with this process and will only cause a higher risk of defecting your CPU.
2. Who the hell will put the CPU with pins down? If you're about to do this kind of thing, I'm pretty sure you got some idea of what side is supposed to be FLATTENED.
3. Lapping the CPU is not a process of making the surface smoother. It is supposed to make the HS FLAT so the contact with the Waterblock / heatsink is perfect. Thus improving heat transfer.
Well anyone that is doing it now had better not be worried about lapping the CPU and fucking up the pins... since lga 775 and newer do not have pins on the CPU.
If you want the ultimate shine (No scratches), get a polishing table and use 35nanometer colloidal silica as final polishing solution. It only takes 2 minutes from stock rough to perfect mirror on a polishing table! LOL. NOOBS use sandpaper...
lol about the warning on the CPU lapping "remember that the plate side goes down, and the pins side goes up" i mean, is out there stupid people like that ? xD
you arent going for shine, you are going for absolute flatness. Shine is useless, and a perfectly SMOOTH (not just flat) finish leaves very little surface for the thermal grease. Yeah, in an ideal world two perfect finishes wouldnt need it, but its not a perfect world.
guys i wanna ask..if u lap the heatsink and the processor surface..will there still be need of applying thermal paste??cuz if its that evenly distributed...i think u could do it without the paste..am i right??anybody plz reply...be great help
Well two flawlessly FLAT surfaces should make better contact with no thermal grease between them if you're using a good even mount with good pressure. About lapping in general its NOT about getting a PRETTY SHINY base, its about getting a FLAT base. Don't polish you sink, thats useless. Infact, all you want is about a lap to 600 grit so that there are tiny spots of imprefection in your two surfaces for the thermal paste to spread into.
our computer was really dusty so i was cleaning it out and the clip came out on the cpu so i was trying to put it back in place and some of the prongs bent. and im pissed. Can it be fixed? and most importantly!!! Does it hold your pictures and music and stuff??????????????
what i did with my old AMD is i got some tweezers and pushed them backinto place, took like 15mins to get it right but it'll work. and your data is on your hard drive so don't worry
i dont know about that but every one does this diffrent. 9 time out of 10 tho the corners and the edges of the die are the parts that are higher or lower then the rest of the die.
Most CPU's are around $200, if you do it right it won't hurt a thing.
And PLEASE PLEASE realize that the purpose is not to get a smooth surface, its to get a flat surface on the heatsink and CPU IHS. Smoothness is a bonus, but thermal paste is made to fill the areas where metal is not contacting the CPU.
A couple corrections for Rodney: I suggest going in side-to-side motions and rotating the CPU or heatsink 90 degrees every 10-15 swipes. If you are using an LGA Intel CPU, use the CPU cover from the product box on the back. I'd also suggest 400-600-800-1000-1500-2000-2500 grits. A little more expensive, but going in those steps will make the CPU heat spreader look like a mirror. Use a piece of grid paper and use the CPU reflection to check the surface for uneven lines. Continue if uneven.
You probably should have noted that if this is done improperly you could end up with a slightly concave CPU surface that doesn't make good contact with the heatsink.
I'll start by saying I have not done this yet but I have had a bit of experience in auto body for a few months and the surface on the CPU is way smoother then 600 grit sandpaper. Think the only purpose for that grit would be to shave some of the surface off to get rid off more material that sits between the electronics in the chip and the sink. If you simply want smoother surfaces your probably going to start with 1200 grit sandpaper and work up to 2000 grit. Should have mirror finish then.
I go WAY higher levels of paper. Start at 800, 1600, 2000, 2500, 3000. Then you have a shiny smooth surface!
cbremer83 6 months ago
@cbremer83 I do 600 > 800 > 1200 > 1500 > 2000. Can't be bothered to go any further.

The purpose of lapping a CPU is to get a completely level CPU surface, not to make it smooth.
The level CPU surface makes the best contact with the heatsink so it can transfer heat better.

Thus improving heat transfer.

everyone has it own style of doing it :)

Well anyone that is doing it now had better not be worried about lapping the CPU and fucking up the pins... since lga 775 and newer do not have pins on the CPU.
MastaSquidge 3 years ago 2
but you can fuck the pads up, so it best if you use the pad cover that it comes with

If you want the ultimate shine (No scratches), get a polishing table and use 35nanometer colloidal silica as final polishing solution. It only takes 2 minutes from stock rough to perfect mirror on a polishing table! LOL. NOOBS use sandpaper...
junkyjuice21 3 years ago
lol about the warning on the CPU lapping "remember that the plate side goes down, and the pins side goes up" i mean, is out there stupid people like that ? xD
NikeySunfire 3 years ago
you arent going for shine, you are going for absolute flatness. Shine is useless, and a perfectly SMOOTH (not just flat) finish leaves very little surface for the thermal grease. Yeah, in an ideal world two perfect finishes wouldnt need it, but its not a perfect world.
MastaSquidge 3 years ago
yeah I guess. honestly I don't care. do whatever you want.
junkyjuice21 3 years ago
guys i wanna ask..if u lap the heatsink and the processor surface..will there still be need of applying thermal paste??cuz if its that evenly distributed...i think u could do it without the paste..am i right??anybody plz reply...be great help

sure ,try it out and tell us your results !!!!!!!!!
channdizzle 3 years ago
Well two flawlessly FLAT surfaces should make better contact with no thermal grease between them if you're using a good even mount with good pressure. About lapping in general its NOT about getting a PRETTY SHINY base, its about getting a FLAT base. Don't polish you sink, thats useless. Infact, all you want is about a lap to 600 grit so that there are tiny spots of imprefection in your two surfaces for the thermal paste to spread into.
Ben333bacc 3 years ago
our computer was really dusty so i was cleaning it out and the clip came out on the cpu so i was trying to put it back in place and some of the prongs bent. and im pissed. Can it be fixed? and most importantly!!! Does it hold your pictures and music and stuff??????????????

no, everything is on the hard drive, if worst comes to worst, you can remove the hard drive to preserve your media

what i did with my old AMD is i got some tweezers and pushed them backinto place, took like 15mins to get it right but it'll work. and your data is on your hard drive so don't worry
muslimz0wnz 2 years ago
Don't go "around and around", go in 8s - otherwise you sand off more of the edges and the contact between CPU and heat sink gets worse.
cablecatdk 3 years ago
done it before and as cablecatdk said go in 8s does less damage to the corners and edges.
orky87 2 years ago
i dont know about that but every one does this diffrent. 9 time out of 10 tho the corners and the edges of the die are the parts that are higher or lower then the rest of the die.
latticelinux 2 years ago
Most CPU's are around $200, if you do it right it won't hurt a thing.
And PLEASE PLEASE realize that the purpose is not to get a smooth surface, its to get a flat surface on the heatsink and CPU IHS. Smoothness is a bonus, but thermal paste is made to fill the areas where metal is not contacting the CPU.
Dethred1 3 years ago
would you really want to put that $1500 CPU down on sandpaper?
hsew 3 years ago
Most people that buy 1500 dollar processors for gaming are the performance junkies. So yes, they do really want to put the $1500 cpu to sandpaper.

uhh ic.. i never knew what the point of lapping was.. thanks rodney
bogangamer 3 years ago
You need more than 600 grit sandpaper
doomtomb3 3 years ago
A couple corrections for Rodney: I suggest going in side-to-side motions and rotating the CPU or heatsink 90 degrees every 10-15 swipes. If you are using an LGA Intel CPU, use the CPU cover from the product box on the back. I'd also suggest 400-600-800-1000-1500-2000-2500 grits. A little more expensive, but going in those steps will make the CPU heat spreader look like a mirror. Use a piece of grid paper and use the CPU reflection to check the surface for uneven lines. Continue if uneven.
Dethred1 3 years ago 2
how much does grid paper cost ?
AgilanKantar 3 years ago
2$ max
Cezarijus 3 years ago
i must agree :)
u should use more then 800 grid to get a real mirrorlike flat finish.
i would also suggest instead of using plain water to put al lil bit of soap in there.
and not a process to rush :)
have fun lapping ;)

would this not be best for water cooling solutions? as I understand, there is direct contact.
lip2lip42 3 years ago
Pass on this one! Want to take more heat away? Use water cooling! No way am I going to use sandpaper or loose water near a CPU! Thanks anyway Rodney!
Rowdyeh 3 years ago
The Intel IHS isn't completely flat, on the e6700 i have its higher in the center than on the edges..
You can check this by putting a ruler or straight edge on top of the cpu IHS, hold it up to the light u will see light between the ruler and IHS.
only advantage is, being flatter = better contact with the HSF = about 2-5 degrees lower, not worth the risk TBH.

WTF ???? just 400 and a 600 sand paper ??
and on top of that, add water ????????????
make the surface smoother ??? "scratch" the surface in circles ??????????????????? (that a nono m8)
The only purpose of doing this procedure is to flat the surface of what ever you are lapping, and after that smooth the surface.
You forgot to do you homework this time m8

SacreDro 3 years ago
You probably should have noted that if this is done improperly you could end up with a slightly concave CPU surface that doesn't make good contact with the heatsink.

His mic pwns!! Turn your volume up.. -.-
Sinsiiiii 3 years ago
I'll start by saying I have not done this yet but I have had a bit of experience in auto body for a few months and the surface on the CPU is way smoother then 600 grit sandpaper. Think the only purpose for that grit would be to shave some of the surface off to get rid off more material that sits between the electronics in the chip and the sink. If you simply want smoother surfaces your probably going to start with 1200 grit sandpaper and work up to 2000 grit. Should have mirror finish then.
D0M1N8R1x 3 years ago
after watching tjharlow videos on lapping understand 600 grit purpose now.. Didn't realize how uneven the CPU surface is.
D0M1N8R1x 3 years ago
Never heard of this.
Do the heatsink producers do this when you get your heatsink out of the box?
