He closes his grip to the plum to deliver the knee to the head while pulling him down into it. This technique is just about the most powerful strike in any arsenal, & is almost always a knock-out shot. K1 got rid of it for this reason. It gives an advantage to bigger & stronger fighters, because they can control the clinch. Japan likes to see a good fight, not a domination.

@awhoergek At first clinching was allowed in K-1, then they changed the rule so you could deliver only one knee from the clinch, then they removed clinching completely. This fight was in the period when one knee from the clinch was allowed, and yes Alistair did hit him with 2 knees, still what a gruesome KO! R.I.P K-1 !

@1AOR1 It would be one thing if he weren't 6'5 and hitting his physical prime. 265 is not abnormal for someone with his build. He was around 190 at 16 years old and made cuts to 205 for way too long. Also gaining 40-50lbs of lean muscle in a 5 year span (he was around 230 between fights at 205) in your late 20's is not unfathomable for a man that trains 3-4 times a day.

This type of knock out has been banned from K1 after this. Because Overeem graps the back of the neck of his oppenent (MMA style) and then knees them. A kickboxer cant defend that because its not part of kickboxing. If you want to defend this knee you must block with both hands infront of your face and this causes a clinch which is not part if K1 either. So its no longer legal.

according to the judges, the first knee was not thrown from the clinch. alistair threw the first knee, AND THEN went into the clinch and threw the second knee. therefore, they ruled that his actions were acceptable.

@spikkel70 The precise wording of the rules counts the moment you hold your opponent with both hands as the start of the clinch. Overeem violated that rule here with the second technique. That forced the KO, so it should in theory have resulted in disqualification.

Although as I said, if you look at how onesided the match was, that may have been overreacting, but now, they just let it go. That's bad, because it signals the athletes that they can break the rules.
