If you believe that Shinn x Lunamaria "Suddenly happened" than you didn't pay attention at all to the early episodes. There was always a thing between them but neither realized it until much later. Such as Lunamaria acting angry/embarrassed when Athrun suggested she go into town alone with Shinn, how the two spent their meals together all the time, and the many things they only shared with each other. Or how Shinn showed signs of jealousy when Luna was fangirling in front of her idol red.

@Fr8ass Shin was up against people who don't kill i.e Kira and Athrun, but if Athrun had decided to take her out there wouldn't have been anything shin could've done about it, just like Kira couldn't save Flay from Rau.

I have to admit, ShinnLuna is a good pairing, and one of my favorite canon pairings (my absolute favorite being KiraLacus), but there's a crossover pairing with Luna that I actually like a lot more. I was first introduced to it by reading Fallen Angel, a piece of Fanfiction. I won't spoil the plot by telling you what pairing it is--you can read it yourself if you're curious. :D
