This is pretty cool. I love the BoB series and find everything about it very fascinating. I'm a history major, so I love this type of stuff, especially from WWII. I have been dying to see these places for myself, but I don't really know how or when I could make a trip over there. Foy and Bastogne would definitely be on the list as well.
Thanks for your videos. I live in Oklahoma city, Oklahoma and have watched many of your videos and have been lucky enough to travel to normandy beach, your videos have helped me to know what to look for when i get there.
Thanks for posting this. I have seen the BoB series and read Dick Winters memoirs dozens of times and probably will never get to visit these sites so thanks for filming this.
@ulysses1904 Hope you have seen my other Band of Brother real location clips. So far I have seen much Brecourt Manor, Carentan and recently the foxholes around Foy near Bastogne. Next year I'm hoping to hit Holland following the Market Garden route and maybe in the distant future, Bergesgarden. I am fasinated about where real events happened. If you ever do make it to Europe, I am aware of a tour company that takes you to all the BoB locations. Bit pricey but maybe worth it if you like BoB.
Having been there myself, a couple summers back it was hard to fathom that there were German guns in those positions, for all it is now is a farmers field which prevented my father and I from actually going onto the field, and I saw the map that Winters drew as well, it was a very moving experience.
@GodOfWar221 I realise this doesn't help but I only got to see the field after knocking on the front door of the farmhouse nearby. In fact I've been there twice now and both times was told 'OK' (they don't speak English and I don't speak French but they knew what I was asking). Interestingly the map drawn by Winters on the new memorial seems to contradict aerial views of the site and other testimony. Not sure if Winters made an error or if I'm going mad.
in band of brothers... this is where they filmed the defense against the german counter attack right? when the shermans then came in (in episode "carentan") i think?
The whole Band of Brothers series was filmed in England (Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire to be precise). Some other small locations were used in England (Hambleden, Buckinghamshire). Parts of Saving Private Ryan were filmed at Hatfield as well, (with the famous opening beach scene filmed near f Curracloe, CO Wexford, Ireland).
Incredible! Thanks for the post. I'm working on an independent film and for a scene we are recreating the trench system. I never knew how virtually identically the real and our locations looked!
Probably a bit late but I have quite a lot of material from the site which I could sort out into a downloadable package if it would help. I was there again in July and a new memorial to the Screaming Eagles has been erected. Interesting part is a map draw by Dick Winters which shows the guns in a straght line, not an L-shape. Having seen an aerial photo showing the L shape set up, I have to assume Maj Winters made an error in the new map.
Its becouse the first map they drew was what they expected to be there.. the gun that he added after they dident know it was there before they attacked.
I have seen it. Obviously changed for gameplay with trees added and removed all over and trenches where there weren't trenches. Have you seen this action in Band of Brothers? Search it on YT. Well worth it and quite accurate. Real action took several hours not the 10 minutes shown in BoB.
I would have ventured up to that area but I only had permission for the main field. Since 'Band of Brothers' I gather that the landowners in the area are fed up with tourists wandering their fields.
There were numerous large trees in the area where Lipton climbed to fire on Gun 1 but hard to tell exactly which one.
I highly recommend Winters' biography, 'The Man Who Led the Band of Brothers' by Larry Alexander. Gives a very detailed version of the Brecourt assault: diff from the TV show.
oh, ive read it. if you liked it, read Malarkeys, Comptons, and Gaurnere/Heffron's books too. i read all of them. as well as the 4 by Donald Burgett (read them if you havnt already, SO GOOD) and also descending from the clouds. that one is from an 82nd airborne soldier, which was a neat perspective. yeah, but Winters book was fascinating. Im actually 5 minutes from the town where he grew up. he lives about 30 minutes away from me now. never met him though
This is the gun positions but this is not Brecourt manor Breciourt Manor is about 1 KM down the road I know because I stay there every year the week of 6th June..
I refer to Brecourt Manor as that is the name given to the action that occurred in that field. The buildings of Brecourt Manor are quite close. Didn't know it was possible to stay there though.

Live in the now.
The poor bastards who are still under the soil there would hate to think you were moping around instead of investing in your next generation.
War heros do not necessarily good fathers make.
