This Anime is actually the prototype of "Gundam-face" mecha anime.

Usually when you have a combining mecha team it's either three or five members for some reason, though there was one show where it was just two people and one where there was a team of four but they didn't combine at all. (There's also Gun X Sword which has El Dora 5, which has five units but one of the pilots died so there's only four left.)

Zambot 3... the Super Robot anime that had the balls to have little kids in it as the pilots, and then kill them in cruel, pointless fashions at the end.

... Thankfully, Super Robot Wars R fixes that problem.
