They're both fast--I don't think a fraction of a second is much a trade off for the Ferrari's having considerably more class. I think that when cars reach this level of performance that drag racing is a pathetic display of their appeal when it should be their appearance and feel--these are not muscle cars.

No. Wrong. This Gallardo, if my memory serves, is rear wheel drive. Furthermore, RWD only helps on the launch. Afterwards, it probably is a detriment. FInally, I think a stock Gallardo is faster than a F430 anyhoo. Great video. I like being able to see this car, especially after reading about it in the C&D 0-200-0 Challenge.

actually its the opposite. awd(4wd) helps on the launch and after is a detriment. the gallardo has a notoriously weak clutch(probably built that way on purpose so people dont break the drivetrain) though and is easy to fry which is probably why he went easy.

It depends, i think, on the amount of power and torque you try to feed through the wheels. For huge power and torque figures 4wd is a must. With less power, a 4wd car doesn't react as quickly as a rwd car. A drag between a Porsche 997 Carrera S and an Audi R8, on short distances is won by the Carrera S wich starts better off the line. In time the Audi does catch up due tu superior power but start wise, weight distribution in this case is decisive.

Wich is what i said in the first post. You can't dismiss a 4X4 system's weight. No two cars, one AWD and one RWD, but otherwise the same, will weigh the same. AWD is heavy. Plus awd cars that use viscous couplings are notorious for being slow. A fixed ratio(ex. 40:60) with gears and hidraulic clutch is fast but if you have a variable system with viscous couplings, it is going to spend the first half second deciding where to send the power and the next half actualy sending it.

Plus clutches are fairly "weak" points of the transmission components. The Murcielago i mentioned earlier should not be revved up past 5000 rpm when having a fast start or when shifting into 2nd gear because in time it will break the clutch. You say that between two cars same everything, weight and all, the AWD would win. In a lab, same conditions and a great AWD system, you would be right. But real life, that situation is hard to achieve and it takes more than AWD to decide a drag . . .

Gallardo's are pretty nice looking cars, you can get one used for around 150k. Not bad for a supercar. It doesnt have the top end performance of many of the expensive supercars, but it still kicks butt.
