Her current dojo won't award black to anyone under 16. I started taking this form too just to learn more. America is definitely a belt factory. But check their references, there are usually none.

I remember when belts actually meant something, you don't just give a little kid a black belt. All of the academies nowadays are just belt factories churning out the belts as fast as they can. No sparring, no contact.
A belt is just something to hold your pants up, I don't mean to hate but things bother me here, like the way his hands wobble on punches and some of his foot positioning. At Karate Academy it averages 4-7 years for a BB but in the end it is whatever it takes for the student to master the stances, blocks, strikes, Kihons, Tezuos, Katas, self defense, Physical fitness, sparring and most important ethics and standards a BB should follow.

Every style has benefits but mentality is key

3 years to get black belt? I lost it at that. I train in Aikido, and it takes about 6 years or more just to get the brown belt. I'm pretty sure that an adult with no martial arts training could fuck this kid up as long as he landed a strike, let alone these "I do BJJ hurr durr" internet tough guys

I am a martial arts instructor - I teach shaolin kempo karate to kids his age & most lack the coordination & comprehension that is necessary for much of their material, let alone the determination that he exhibits. Very admirable. However, I question the wisdom of allowing someone that young to achieve a black belt. We don't allow anyone under 16 to reach that level. Also, 3 years is an awful short amount of time - minimum of 5 at our dojo.

We've had around 5 Karate black belt kids (ages 10-13) come into our Judo school and were choked out during kumite-like free sparing within 30 seconds by our orange belt 9 year olds.
Yeah this is a little rediculous - some schools at our school minimum age on a black belt is 18 -and for testing you have to las 3 5 min rounds with a 5dan blackbelt - most people cant take the assbeating they give up

@gobind888 Dude, seriously? Your club puts belts on way too high a pedestal. Sho as in shodan mean's first. This is because it is generally considered as the beginning of your training. A point in a karateka's life when they're sensei believes they are ready to begin yudansha training. If you put shodan on too high a pedestal, most won't look beyond that, or understand that black belt means very little relatively speaking.
@CrankyLeopard In judo, you need a min of 6 years of training to get a black belt and you must be a min age of 17. So if you started training at 6, you have to wait 11 years, train 11 years to get your black belt. In our Judo school, an avg of 8-12 years is when you get a black belt. But WHEN you get it, you're a legit black belt. That's why our purple belts beat many of the black belts. Because the time it takes us to get a purple is the same time it takes other schools to get a black.

Or does it give them some false sense that they're dojo is better than other dojos just because they make people wait longer and be better for each respective belt. Belts in general are very superficial and in my opinion they're main purpose is to make things a little more efficient in the dojo. "All green belts over here, practice this... brown belts do this.." etc. How a dojo wants to distribute belts for this is up to them.

At are dojan there are alot of 8 year olds or at least 7 and 9 who are deputy and can spar very well sometimes with forms to if they are focus on what they do. The difference is they don't get a full black belt until teen years 14 They get a colored black belt red and black rather then a full black belt.

Karate is a good martial art for beginners, but if you really want to defend yourself, boxing is the way to go. You got more power in your punches than you would in karate.
I am 11, got myblack belt at 8 years old (our would have), started at 4 years old. I would be a 2nd Dan Black belt. But I have to be sixteen to even get a first Dan. I live in the U.S. The rules here are much different (wish they weren't) :(

@pryzed1 BJJ is fine on the ground. Unfortunately, you can't grapple ten people at the same time. It's much easier to fight mutliple opponents standing. A good martial artist from any system can avoid being taken down quickly by the average untrained mob. In your case, there wouldn't be much that you could do standing up. It's best to prepare for diverse situations. Also, patience is more important in jujitsu than it is in many standing systems. You would lose to most other grapplers.

A point in a karateka's life when they're sensei believes they are ready to begin yudansha training. If you put shodan on too high a pedestal, most won't look beyond that, or understand that black belt means very little relatively speaking.

@CrankyLeopard In judo, you need a min of 6 years of training to get a black belt and you must be a min age of 17. So if you started training at 6, you have to wait 11 years, train 11 years to get your black belt. In our Judo school, an avg of 8-12 years is when you get a black belt. But WHEN you get it, you're a legit black belt. That's why our purple belts beat many of the black belts. Because the time it takes us to get a purple is the same time it takes other schools to get a black.

Or does it give them some false sense that they're dojo is better than other dojos just because they make people wait longer and be better for each respective belt. Belts in general are very superficial and in my opinion they're main purpose is to make things a little more efficient in the dojo. "All green belts over here, practice this... brown belts do this.." etc. How a dojo wants to distribute belts for this is up to them.

@CrankyLeopard Yes, it is up to the dojo but giving out a black belt for a young kid gives THEM a false sense that they can do miracles on the street and then end up hurting themselves. I've seen this all the time where kids that think they can fight anyone simply for being a black belt.. end up hurt. That my friend is false sense of self reliance. This should be illegal... by law. The only good thing a black belt does (for kids) is discipline, nothing more.

Having a black belt gives false self reliance that could cause and DOES cause harm to kids because they think they can beat on anyone in any situation. Seen it with my personal eyes, heck, when I was a kid fighting in a school yard, I witnessed it. There's a reason why in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, BJJ, you must be 16-18 to get a black belt. Levels of maturity matters A LOT and I am martial artist.

3 years of training?? Um thats sad. No 8 year old kid should be a black belt. Its like they just give everyone black belts nowadays. For my school, it take 5 1/2 years to get a black belt. I'm getting mine in March im not buying the belt im earning it.
People just buy belts these days. For me you need to earn it, and show it. Sure he's good but just not black belt good. smh..Time,dedication,respect and confidence.

At are dojan there are alot of 8 year olds or at least 7 and 9 who are deputy and can spar very well sometimes with forms to if they are focus on what they do. The difference is they don't get a full black belt until teen years 14 They get a colored black belt red and black rather then a full black belt.

@evilslore87 He is more deserved of it than most black belts at my school and they have taken 5 yrs or so to get it. Some longer. I trained 5 days a week for the first 3 yrs and got my first dan after 3 and half. I now have a second dan and just started my 8th year.

@zedosix Yeah he is good dont get me wrong, but i just dont get it 3yrs doesnt seem long enough, but i guess it depends on the dojo. My sensei's boy just turned 12, he trains 6-7 days a week 4hrs a day an he started at 4. an only just gained his JR black belt. His dad (my sensei) is the type where he wants u to earn your belts and know your techniques 100%. My sensei doesnt Give out belts like candy which is good. (2ND DAN NICE keep up the good work.!)

I am 11, got myblack belt at 8 years old (our would have), started at 4 years old. I would be a 2nd Dan Black belt. But I have to be sixteen to even get a first Dan. I live in the U.S. The rules here are much different (wish they weren't) :(

@pryzed1 BJJ is fine on the ground. Unfortunately, you can't grapple ten people at the same time. It's much easier to fight mutliple opponents standing. A good martial artist from any system can avoid being taken down quickly by the average untrained mob. In your case, there wouldn't be much that you could do standing up. It's best to prepare for diverse situations. Also, patience is more important in jujitsu than it is in many standing systems. You would lose to most other grapplers.
