Omg - When everyone choose a slow tempo, the choir must be much, very much, better! They roar like hungry, rutting cattle and starting with ff - fff is the wrongest they can do. The 'Amen-Fugue' is a masterpiece. God bless G.F. Handel - Fire the conducter!
@bevy814 The first year I played in the Messiah Festival at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS ---this is the tempo they used. I hated it, but again it's kind of a somber moment. And the reaction from the audience was unbelievable--not a dry eye in the house.
I have to agree with most of the comments on the tempo. Far too slow, but GREAT sound. I've performed this many a time at a much faster tempo and in various venues most of them quite large and it sounds so much more alive at a faster tempo. And yes, why oh why would the conductor ever sit for such a piece? I do hope there is a legitimate reason or else it shows his laziness and lact of respect and that certainly would transfer over to the choir.
sometimes conductors choose slower tempos in big concert spaces because if they perform at a faster speed it will just sound like mush to half the audience

The conductor is probably performing this slower so the echo effect of the church will not muddle the music together. Sounds great to me, especially for such a small group.
@Andrewstory79 actually in the beginning it really is that slow, but it's supposed to speed up, which it doesn't in this video, so I have to agree with you it is slow, but in the beginning it's the right tempo.
Mogliby wybrać trochę szybsze tempo - to fakt...

Nicely done but the basses in the beginning are very flat.

WAY too slow and somber.

Yep - too ponderous but would sound really great with this ensemble and acoustics if taken at a faster tempo

This kind of performance is what gives Messiah the reputation of being long and boring. Much toooooooooooo sloooooooooooow.

Agree with tempo being too slow. Organist for over 30 years, never heard it done quite so slowly. otherwise nicely done

I think the tempo is way too slow. It makes a lovely spirited piece sound clunky and plodding. Handel meant it to sound neither.

acoustics demand slower tempo. we are so big and sloth to realize the genius here. credit the composer

How could you as the conductor remain sitting for the Amens? (unless he has a medical condition) I can understand the recitatives....but really?
