Well, you mention the world being "a giant k-mart." This would only happen in a socialist style state where competition and incentives to innovate have been eliminated by law. In case you have not noticed it has been a long time since K-Mart was the worlds larget retailer. The company stopped statifying the consumer and they moved on to retial outlets that better provided for their needs.

Iceland has the most efficient generous welfare system in the world because everybody knows each other and no one wants a rep for being on the dole. If the IRS were abolished, State governments could pick up the slack (albeit through state taxes) and tailor social services to the local situation.
