Was Relief Capt. on this boat for a couple years. He was in no way in bad shape on that bridge, as you have to be pointed in the dark to offset the left hand draft. I will agree the Capt might have been using too much rudder in the end, as you want to be able to straight stick it going thru to gain as much wheel RPM (and resulting power from the props) at that point. If there's ever a problem, its the boats port stern getting close to the left pier. Boats have sunk as a result of hitting it
i live and mississippi i saw that barge that day i go over that bridge all the time and ive seen barges hit the bridges and almost hit them all the time
lol sometimes ya gotta do it that way, back the hell outa it and flank or drive her for all shes got and hope she will make the steer. looks like vicksburg or greenville cant tell tho. ive seen closer calls too
What an excellent video. The guy driving this tow of barges was really having a hard time. He could have used a couple of more tugs to keep the load from shifting in the current so much. I read on the newspaper from time to time how they somethimes make contact with the bridge foundations.
NICE NICE NICE

that wasn't pucker factor unless he was a green horn. I go through there regularly with 35 loads...he had 20. working his rudders wayyyyy too much

Slippin,a slidden and a drivin---Pucker factor had to be high.
This video should give one a high respect for a towboat pilots abilities!
