This music got my daughter hooked on classical at the age of 5.... we were driving together and she just had to listen to it over and over again ..esp. 4:20, she was curious about the instruments...the horns, then at 5:15 the flutes, etc... as Beethoven presents the orchestra. The burping bedposts, ,..
As much as i love your interpretation of the slow second movement of the emperor concerto, with so much beauty and feeling that it can bring a tear to my eye, you come short of showing the innate power that this piece has. Granted, there are not many great versions of this undervalued piece available, but try Katchens version. He rules supreme.
This is excellent performance of Greatest Beethoven’s work! It is one of the my lovely Beethoven’s genius’s masterpieces for piano and orchestra! Helen Grimaud performed its piano party is very poetic, emotively, expressively! She has chosen the very good tempo for this performance!
@googoogoo They make dog collars that deliver a nasty shock if the dog barks. Maybe they should hand out something like that at concerts for people. I know we'd hear a lot less gagging and coughing if people received a shocking zap every time they felt the urge to lose control of their bodily noises. As a bonus, their suffering and agony would add entertainment value to the whole event! LOL!
@googoogoo The elements of live music, such as the environment in which th music is performed are what make it a truly unique experience for everyone involved, musicians and audience alike. If people are coughing then at least you know they aren't asleep, but they are awake and enjoying the music being made on-stage.
Yeah, it gets annoying, and they like to defend it with something like "well, what if they can't help it? What if their throats are dry?" Then bring some gum/cough drops!
@googoogoo I cannot believe the number of people that go to concerts knowing that they are going to spoil it for others by coughing and so on. These people should be marked out in public. They are selfish beyond belief.
@tranelarod Good pick up. Her recorded CD release is boring; this one is vastly better, even with the consumptive audience. I've never heard a "definitive" performance (as if there can be such a thing with Beethoven). I think I remember liking Barenboim's with Klemperer and Richter does some interesting things with a weird score if I remember correctly, but I haven't heard those recordings in decades now.
Nice seeing the video. I forgot how beautiful she is.
She's a great pianist, i think!!! Did anyone read her book? i did, it's amazing! she's a very special person... In a good way! She describes in her book that she's like growing together with her piano when she plays... she began with 7 years to play, it was a therapy because she always hurt herself and they noticed that she has a huge talent. With 12 years, she went to the national conservatoire de Paris!! It's an amazing woman!
Just to put this performance, especially the pianism, in perspective, check out Beethoven: Choral Fantasy w. Pollini, Mattila, Braun, Seiffert & Abbado...
a woman is throwing up during this very beautiful moment no?, but she loved the music, consequently she stayed to hear these wonderfull musicians. haha thank you hélène!
As an 80 year okd I can only say how glad I am to have lived long enough to hear youI have the dvd "LIving with wolves and would love to see more of your performances. Music is a language and I can understand every word you say. Keep up your good work.
Til tonite I knew Helene only from 1 CD I have, Helene plays Rachmaninof. But now, each thing I watch her play, it's like the first time I've heard each piece I thought I knew so well! She's something else!!!
Incredible ! Never seen a video shot more like a movie. All around great. (Hair included) I will make it a project to find more Grimaud video next week.
Many, many thanks for taking the time to post this. Incredible as it may seem, we French people have to rely on Utube to watch the Last Night, as French TVs have never cared to broadcast it !!!
Beautiful
I hope those of you who have commented about the background noise are never unfortunate enough to develop an asthmatic cough.

Persistent coughers should be quietly ushered out of concerts. Repeat offenders should be banned

@googoogoo I agree! Why is it you can never go to a concert or hear a live recording of one without someone coughing the entire time???
