There are plenty of big strong Russian NHL players. They're used to the NHL and play well. In the 70's Russians came from a game where they played on bigger rinks,had more space to utilize their technique and skill. They never played in the rough conditions of the smaller more physical rinks. Phili was a dirty team, the Russian roster wasn't prepared for a game like that. I don't blame them for using a gameplan like that because if they weren't allowed to play dirty they would've lost.

They played their style (beat the shit out of everyone) against the russians, and the russians didn't like it, they believed that the game shouldnt be played so rough. So they refused to play in protest. Watch the documentary "The Broad Street Bullies". Theres a part in it where they talk about the game.
