"Belgians certainly have a good taste in linen". That's a good one...OK, I'll abandon "Tooaimuns", and watch my favourite Kalm videos again: Golub, Guston, Martin Ramirez...
Hi James. Just discovered this video on one of the most apalling artists of our century. Absolutely dreadful. On a par with Marlene Dumas. Emptiness raised to the status of art: no color, no drawing, bad execution. OK, enough Tuymans-bashing for tonight. Makes me want to sleep...
As a painter with a serious art education, I figured I'd give my two cents.
I think Tuymans is one of the most interesting "painters" out there; interesting because he believes painting is dead. He paints from odd and unusual sources and transforms his imagery into banality.
There is something very nihilistic about this process (how can one guy create so many drab paintings?). However, this is his intention and, in their way, they're quite successful. Oh, and koenbp sounds like an idiot.
Christ, that dozy, affectatious 'art critic' woman was a real find...talk about subscribing to the stereotype...so, what's his name then...Toy Mans? Tuy-mans...two mans? Luke...look...luck...lookoutthere'samadwomanabout?
WoW this guy really sucks, can somebody tell me how this guy made it, when his artwork is sooo bad. looks like he needs to go back to school and learn the fundamentals of painting.
I think that lady said it best, the people who claim to like this, either 1# dont know how to draw and paint, or 2# only claim to like his work because they want to be part of the so called cool crowd and dont want to feel stupid in expressing what their eyes really tell them.
is this the first and only time you've seen his work(on youtube)? is everyone who disagrees with your opinion a 'slave to fashion', an idiot? Tuymans is a painter you don't like. super. I've seen the last four shows in person, a few nice paintings, some not, just my opinion.'the cool crowd'??really?
Congratulations. What a great show! Mr. Tuymans is always on top. Is surprising to see such an ambitious scale, in this wonderful painter. This show reveals a surprising epical dimension on Tuymans very important work.
RICHTER! omg! this guy sucks compared to richter. richter is a master. and this is slightly above average painting. there's no element of genius in a single one of these. RICHTER rules!
James, thanks for hitting this show. The idea that he is exploring myth is interesting to me. Are the paintings as dry in appearence as they appear in photos and video or is there a light sheen to the work or evidence of a medium other than thinner and paint?
These are pretty dry surfaces. I reviewed his last show about two years ago (check the Brooklyn Rail archives) and said that there's a sense that feeling anything towards these works would be disregarding what I think is their whole purpose, numbness and ennui.
Oh, BTW, what the heck was Claudia talking about? If she's too old and doesn't count, then get someone young, or at least a critic with half a brain that does. Don't you just love people that have to bring their little cushy-wooshy to exhibits and galleries that won't allow photos. I knew you were tuying with her!
I don't want to be unkind to Claudia, I had some comments from others that didn't make the final cut, but I think Claudia exemplifies a sizable segment of the scene. I like a critic who" likes what everybody else likes." Insightful.
indifference is very fashionable, it's an easy way out. 'the scene' does not produce much of concrete value, other than it's own scene, based on its own indifference, blaming everyone but themselves.
The Richter reference makes sense but I think bigger is not always better and he has yet to show anything of Richter's verve, except for the "Wonderland" piece that reminded me of the entrance to the "it's a small world" ride at Disneyworld. I saw his work at the Whitney Bienniale and I have to say that although a good piece, it kept my attention for about thirty seconds.
You can count on this group of unruly viewers to provide all of the necessary uncoolness. I thought the work interesting. But, my socks are still on. Regressing one video, aren't you beautifully positioned to be a Johns' biographer. You have an easy and natural grace with these people coupled with the perfect background and insights. I could find little on the man anywhere. As always, thanks.
Wow, what a compliment (being a Johns biographer), that shows the power of the internet (to distort perceptions of social status and relevance). I'm lucky if they'd let me buy a book on Johns let alone write one. As was stated at Art World Salon blog, my "grace" is with the "lesser talents, bottom-feeders and psychopaths," seeing as how they make up 95% of the scene I've got lots of material to work with.
mr. kalm, thanks for this one, the big paintings look great! zwirner gallery is a great space to actually see paintings, nice big skylights. tuymans is influencing (being copied) by lots of artists today. thanks.
I still have my reservations regarding the "quality" of Tuymans painting. If his status as a major influence that lots of young painters are coping is a fact, then it should make it easy for tough painters to distinguish themselves. His interest for me is why and how he achieved the amount of recognition he has, astounding. (I liked his earlier work, more paint)
mr. kalm; Tuymans work is less about Richter, for me, and more in the tradition of Morandi, his dialouge with browns and grays in particular. also monet (the waterlillies) turner (the disappearing horizon) rothko (his mature format) and malevich's white on white. for me, all of this work is about a barely there versus the all-there of pollock and picasso. i think this is very attractive to many painters unmotivated by the, some might say, expressionistic 20th century. just my opinion:)

ab-expressionism was the right step foward. reactionary richter is a fall backwards with a day-glo palette.

The power of the painting is lost in the large works. " I like what everybody likes." says it all.
