Wayne sure did and does look like a tough guy. I wouldn't mess with him. Enough of the humor. It takes a big man to talk about Carson when Carson is dead and can't defend his name.
I think the only reason guys do the big, hokey, dramatic scene in which they pull apart fighting men is because eventually the guys in the fight would have to say, "Uh...wanna stop now? Oh, okay. Bye."
They were both exellent at what they did. Carson pissed Wayne off and Wayne set him straight. Let's not make more of it than that.
Sometimes the late night comics blast people in the news that need to be blasted, and frankly I enjoy it . Wayne was not one of those kind of people ...... as Carson found out.
What Wayne is saying, ultimately, is that Johnny Carson tried to have him killed by spreading lies about him being an informant on the mafia. I have to put a disclaimer out first and say that I've never even met either one of these men. That being said, I believe Wayne. When I watched the Tonight Show, I always--yes, always--sensed that Carson was really a conniving rat bastard under his friendly demeanor. He would try to have a real man like Wayne Newton killed for daring to call him out.
ok my turn. I know Wayne okay Johnny was no prince okay. and jokes can go to far. and Wayne handled it his way. didn't get the press or nothing. Carson was a legend in his field, but nowhere near Newton as an entertainer. I reluctently went to see Newton one night at the Aladin, and I must say, as a musician, I was totally blown away by his talent. Then I knew why he was being paid one million dollars a week!!

This story is hard to swallow. Its unlikely he could have just walked into Carson's office unchallenged by security or staff. Anyway, as he tells it it, does not reflect well on Newton given that he was 17 years Carson's junior. It also doesn't reflect well on Newton given that he is telling this story only after Carson died. The hit list bit sounds like BS too. The mob doesn't hit someone to keep then from testifying unless the person is actually a danger to them which Newton denies he was.
"Johnny Carson was a mean spirited person".......Wat? From every account I have heard, he was suppose to be a nice and caring person. He was sought of a shy person, who liked to keep his private life private. Newton is just a crybaby. ....... and probably gay as well.
Wayne, I saw you on the Mike Huckabee show. Up until that point , I thought you a brainless bag of shit; however, after that, I was convinced you were and are. God
So he could have gone to Johnny Carson at any time and he instead contacted anyone BUT Mr. Carson, that makes me believe the story of him taking the Vegas deal from Carson and he was embarassed. Also Wayne Newton is a joke.
PS the im a simple Indian boy excuse doesnt mean You couldnt have had connections to the mob.
"Johnny Carson was a mean-spirited human being." I believe that to be true. There was the night that Red Buttons, reportedly, tried very politely to tell Carson to shut up ("We're here to hear the kid sing - let the kid sing"), when Carson was being persistently rude and obnoxious towards Jerry Vale during one of his performances. Wayne's a decent guy and a great entertainer - I trust him and believe him.
WOW, Wayne is a real tough guy, he threatened a little guy that weighed 130lbs. He's a real schmuck. Why so sensitive about homosexuality? I think Wayne is a arrogant, smug, obnoxious asshole, and you couldnt pay ME to go see his act that is a rip-off of Elvis.
@kuriouslee Well I know if I was accused of being a homosexual on national television I certainly would want to clear things up with the public and with the guy who said I was. I don't have anything against homosexuals, but being accused of being gay when it's not true is entirely different.

I think the character problem Wayne had over the years with critics and just people in general was that he wasn't believable and not sincere when he sang, you can see that in his eyes and face, he just seemed so fake and so rehearsed where singers like Tom Jones and Elvis REALLY felt the songs they did and it showed when they performed.

@UglyBetty70, Thanks for the info, I did a Rickles + Landon search on Youtube and saw the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, both of them. What's also interesting is that it looked like Dean had a few drinks. From what I understand is that Dean normally drank tea to look like whiskey as part of his television character.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The bottom line is, Carson made fun of Newton, and Newton was a bad sport about it. He got his feelings hurt. I also find it very interesting that Wayne Newton would imply that Johnny Carson would have him put on a hit list.....It also says alot about Newton that he would not come forward with this until after Johnny died....just grow up and learn how to take a joke already.
@cmyster73 You didn't listen carefully to the video, go back and listen again...jeesh...he made it very clear that NBC (news) had stated he would testify against the mafia (and Carson egged that on in his monologues). The hit list was created by the Mafia against those that were suspected of testifying. Were you really THAT dense not to understand what he said. If you're THAT stupid stay off the internet.
@cmyster73 That's not what Newton said. What he said was the FBI showed him a hit list (compiled by the Mafia) with his name on it because NBC stated he would be a witness in a trial. NBC's faulty reporting put him on the hit list. By the way, this was well documented and covered years later on TV that NBC and Carson really screwed up. Its just not replayed on the Best of Carson.
The story also goes that Johnny wanted to buy a Vegas casino, but changed the terms so many times the sellers lost interest. Wayne stepped in and made an offer which reportedly infuriated Johnny.
Johnny, who was responsible for one-third of NBC's revenues at the time, reportedly got former Nightly News' Brian Ross to do a hatchet job on Wayne, linking him to the mob.
Wayne Newton is a very solid upstanding man that gives it all in his shows. He also does a lot of charity work including shows for our soldiers. This story seems very believable.
I like Johnny Carson a lot but you can tell he has that side of him that could be a prick and a jackass. No doubt he thought he could get some jokes at the expense of Wayne but Wayne was not going to put up with that sh*t. I think Wayne did the right thing; he threatened him but didn't assault him when most people would have made Carson spit out a few teeth. Those haters defending Johnny need to realize you're defending the school yard bully.
Controversy sells, Wayne's fame at the time lagged so this was likely staged in advance and no it hardly hurt anyone's career! Wayne put on a good act here.
Everything he says is suspect based off of one thing he said "The FBI handed me a bullet proof vest and said call us if anything happens". whatever! If the FBI thinks your going to be murdered they don't give yah a vest and say call us, I call BS!
wayne handled the problem perfect!good for him.i would love to know this man as a person.i feel he is a genuine person.being a entertainer myself one cares about self image.long live wayne newton and his show.KEEP THE TRAIN CHUGGIN WAYNE!
Wayne is a whiny loser.... Almost everyone 'big' in show busniess owes Carson alot for their success.. and they know it... look at Letterman, Rickles, Seinfeld and many many others..
To be honest, Carson was appeared that way. He was like the David Letterman or Howard Stern of his time. He was a bitter, loathsome, chicken-hearted little man who couldn't hack it in the entertainment business, so they settled for presenting them. Bitter at lacking the talent to be an actor or singer on their own, they pick on those they can get away with picking on. Newton would have rang his bell. He's a real man and an honorable one for standing up to the schoolyard bully.
Carson had great class....was not perfect. No one is. Newton exudes class also. With a strong character on top of it. But a mistake was made in hammering Wayne. ...He could have been a more polite in the office...but was fed up and ticked off a good while. So he flexed some muscles. And it did the trick. ...Asking Johnny 'nicely' to quit it - is not very convincing.
It wasn't just wayne Newton he offended. On Elvis's 40th birthday he was watching the Johnny Carson show and Johnny carson said Elvis is fat and 40, and Elvis blew up the tv and said I don't know why I ever liked that son of a bitch. Johnny Carson was a prick.
@petclark1 Well, I heard that the reason that all started was because, at that time, Joan Rivers was his permanent guest host. She left The Tonight Show to host a competing late-night talk show on the FOX network and she failed to tell him about it, so because of that and not informing him, he got mad and barred her from his show. He never forgave her for leaving him in the lurch.
Back then, such a joke might have compromised Mr. Newton's reputation. Today's comedians are downright mean. Current Comedy Central Roasts know no limits. Wayne has always card for his fans and gave his all in performances. I think he might have feared damaging that relationship. Bless you Wayne! Thanks for the post.
Let's see it happen to you and then see how you'd feel if you were straight and someone high profile like JC is making fun of you and spreading rumours about you. You can joke about many things but that's just one thing you don't accuse someone of, especially if it's not true.
im posting so much cause no matter what was said or what this vid is about, you people are so narrowminded and bias, spouting bs w.out getting the whole story, and are as much as a hatemongering tool as carson was. Why are you people so mean? Oh- thats rehtorical, idiots
No need for anyone else to comment as makthnife obviously knows it all. Amazing that a person who knows so much spends so much time attacking others for their opininons. Get a life you deadshit.
I know. what a pussy. Johnny carson COULD HAVE KICKED HIS PUDGY ASS, but had too much class.... Though wayne is an expert of ass in a wholly different way... WAYNE YOU COCK BOY!
Carson had a nasty little face. Small, close-set eyes - pinched nose - there are things told by a face that are absolutely true. Conan O'Brien -- same.
As great as Carson was, there is no denying that late-night comics can be merciless in their mockery of public figures. Conan O'Brien, for example, is terrible about Kirstie Alley.
Let me get this straight - Wayne Newton threatened to kick Johnny Carson's ass and we then added to a Mafia hit-list, of which he was the only survivor?
Do I even need to point out the stench of bullshit at work here? Wayne Newton was never even that big a star. Hes a fucking lounge singer with a great agent.
Scuse me, but he was a big star. He's loaded - has horses worth millions; anyone who gets involved with Arabian horses has to have the bucks to back it up, and Wayne Newton did, and does. When I was a teenager, he was a big name. I wasn't a big fan, he wasn't cool - but he definitely was easy to listen to, and he always drew a crowd. Carson - mean little shit who had too much alimony to pay.
Johnny Carson was a great TV icon and Wayne Newton seems to be telling the truth and not peddling some book to make money. All Wayne wanted was those types of Jokes about him to be stopped. I think comics do go a bit far and get to the point where it actually is hurting someone who they were friends with. Jokes do cross the line and asking Mr Carson to cease & desist was not asking for the moon. JC should have stopped. Doesnt mean I like JC any less but I feel that Comics do go too far @ times
Remember when young comics on the Carson show could only hope they would get called to the guest chair after their schtick? He could make or break your career. I think WN was an easy target for JC's humor and takes himself way too seriously. He is a bit of an Elvis/Liberace cross. WN found an audience in Vegas and stayed there because his talent and appeal had limits. He should be grateful that Carson helped to keep his name out there and fill his shows despite the motive. Lighten-up Big Boy.
Wayne Newton is a prick and liar. You think anyone (regardless of fame) can just walk into Johnny Carsons office in Burbank unannounced and threaten him? He was NBC's biggest star. There's security and you would need a pass to even to get through the door! Wayne is obviously lying about the confrontation. Probably to sell tickets to his shitty show. Real classy and brave(and convenient) of him to bring this up AFTER Johnny is dead!
Give Wayne a break, if you spent the last 50 years of your life sining, you probably would not have a voice left, I saw him on November 4, he put on a great show, sure he spoke a lot during the first half of the show but he is still a great showman and obviously people still love him, they are still going to his show and still love him. There are alot of younger entertainers that cannot sing at least Wayne does not lip sink.
@RosaElliott "..if you spent the last 50 years of your life sining, you probably would not have a voice left.."
.
I've wondered if Wayne took measures to intentionally make his voice huskier. He was known for his high, "girlish" voice when he was younger - which is what Carson poked fun at. Theorizing maybe he got sick of being kidded about it. He once had a superb singing voice, a shame if he deliberately destroyed it.
Just saw Wayne tonight at the Tropicana.. he has no voice!... he strains every note when he sings, and sadly he's also a sexually insecure piece of shit! My tickets were comped btw.. save your money, go see Bette Midler instead!!
Wayne Newton's not 6'4. :-) I know this personally because I met him last Friday night, and he even made a joke about my height. His agent said he was 6'0, but I'd think he is either 6'1 or 6'2. But a strong man, nontheless, and a kind man too, but never mistake kindness with weakness. I agree, he would have fucked Carson up. :)
Johnny Carson was mean to many of the guest on his show. His show got the highest ratings when Joan Rivers Co hosted it, the only time I would ever watch his boring show, but he treated her badly when he was retiring. Johnny wasn't ever funny. Go Jay!! Wayne Newton is and has always been a hard working individual. People are jealous of his fame.
Carson may have very well been a meanspirited human being. We would never have known because getting on "The Tonight Show" was so important for celebrities that they would sweet talk Johnny Carson no matter how he acted.
Wayne is likable. Carson is not. Good for you Wayne! Carson is an asshole, and he admitted that's why he quit drinking -- he got to mean and vicious. Wayne is right to call a spade a spade. Carson was a snob and an asshole. Good thing he had some other traits that let him succeed. Wayne is the bomb! Love that guy!
can you not write a sentance???? And Mr. Newton DID tell this story in his book when Carson was alive. As I keep posting, do your friggin homework before you spout crap you dont know...this is whats wrong with people nowadays
I tend to believe Wayne when he says that Johnny was a mean spirited human being in back of the way he handled all of his divorces. He really didn't seem like the kind of guy who had much regard for others. That's why I never liked Letterman either. I always got that same vibe from him. He comes across as a jerk and besides that, he's NOT funny. With Leno, he was a stand up so you really felt like he was just kidding.
Most of you who are making comments against Wayne Newton most likely never met the man. We weren't there to see firsthand what occurred between Newton and Johnny Carson. I believe that both men were incredible talents in their respective careers, but frankly couldn't get along. If Carson did offend Newton, then you can't blame the man for standing up for his honor. Whatever did take place is between the two star celebrities and their lawyers (in other words, the people with the money).
Theres 2 sides to every story and its awfully easy for wayne newton to knock someone after hes dead and not there to answer for himself...very cheap...very sleazy!
Heh, you could tell that he was still seething when he told that story. I probably would've threatened to kick Johnny's ass too if I were in Wayne's position.
Yeah I believe Wayne is being truthful for the mere fact that he is obviously still pissed off at what Carson did. Carson may have been a great talk show host, but as a person he left much to be desired.
I second that emotion! I wish Wayne had kicked Johnny's smart ass ass! Johnny was a show biz legend but often had a cold, cruel side. Yeah, Wayne was OBVIOUSLY still quite angry about it. And who can blame him! What a fascinating clip! THANKS for your insightful comment! :)
Why wouldn't he go and see Carson or phone him BEFORE contacting his agents, attorneys, etc? Who the hell did he think he was to threaten Carson with violence to get his way? Given Carson was nearly 20 years Newton's senior, hardly a heroic thing to do, nor is attacking him after he died. Carson didn't have 'the problem' Newton did!!! Everytime I've heard Newton speak he is high on drama and very low on witnesses. I believe he is full of it.
have you ever tried to contact a celeb? Ya, just email him/her, right? Call 'em up. All the people posting on here, whom I am trying to correct, are shortsighted and are narrowminded. get the whole story before you prove how "full of it" ya'll are
@somewhatlongdong - Horseshit, he walked right into Johnny's office and dealt with him straight to his face. The jokes stopped, but that tactics didn't. That was Wayne's point. Wayne thought the matter had been handled, and he had settled it like a man. Johnny made it a War...or people at NBC. More likely Johnny because of the Vegas Association. Johnny was in Vegas as much as Wayne.
@somewhatlongdong Did you actually view this video or are you really that stupid? Newton said for a year and a half he tried to contact Carson through every possible means and when that failed he went to Carson's office PERSONALLY and told Carson TO HIS FACE to stop with the jokes or he would kick his ass. Newton is 6'4 well over 250lbs he would have squashed Carson like a bug.
@Etnalleb Are you Wayne Newton? How do you know it happened as Newton tells it? And why did Newton wait till after Carson died to start trashing him? Carson was 100 times the entertainer Newton was and this whole thing just reeks of petty jealousy and revenge against a dead man.
@gfrog2000 FYI I happened to be one of the people Newton passed on his way down to Carson's office as i worked for a courier service at that time and Newton was friendly to EVERY-ONE even the peons unlike Carson who was a arrogant ,Narcissist . This particular day Newton did not stop or greet any-one but looked like he was on a mission to kill some-one , it's to bad he didn't. As for talent gfrog you show your stupidity by saying Carson had more than W.N get real.
Arrogant narcissist? Carson was the polar opposite, being very self-conscious and shy, like many comedians. The only people who saw him as arrogant, were the ones who misinterpreted his shyness and need for privacy. It's an extremely common problem, and Carson himself has even pointed it out.
Also, if you're a celebrity of any kind, you're going to have to expect a few jokes at your expense.
@ChudFapper It;s one thing to have a few jokes taken at one's expense but Carson was doing this on a regular basis and the jokes were assaulting W.N as a person and not as a entertainer. Where you a close confident of J.C? were you actually around the man when he was off stage and unbridled to say and do what he wanted to do? I saw his arrogance and pride 1st hand and i would say the only person with more pride & arrogance is Donald Trump... that does say much for Mr Carson.
@Etnalleb My eyes glaze over very quickly when an anonymous poster to a YouTube video starts claiming "inside" knowledge. In so far as talent goes, Carson was on national TV several times a week for about 35 years. Wayne Newton was/is a freak show in Vegas that only blue-haired old women get excited about. Newton is not in the same area code as Carson.
@gfrog2000 What area code are you from Mars? It's widely known that Wayne Newton IS Mr.Las Vegas and was one of the Highest paid entertainers in the World. He owned at one time practically all of Las Vegas and i'll make any kind of bet you want that when Newton dies Vegas will shut it's light's off in honor of his many years of being one of it's most famous stars. Carson was nothing more than a copy of Donald Trump a fucking Carnival Barker.
Wayne Newton rocks and I don't blame him one bit for making a stand against Johnny. I liked Johnny too, but he did have a habbit of stepping over the line. He thought he was untouchable and Wayne put him in his place. Good for him.
While I don't like when celebrities can't take jokes...Wayne knew Johnny personally. If he says Johnny was a mean person than odds are he was and people were fooled by the hollywood image of him. I have heard many people claim Johnny Carson was an asshole so he isn't the first to say this.
I've read a few books on Johnny and if some items were true... he was no great person. He was not a warm guy. He WAS a great tv host. Wayne needs to learn how to take a joke. He tried a year 1/2 to contact him... why? Just let it go.
no, i don't think he was a closet racist. it would have come out since his death, for sure. bill cosby, oprah, or arsinio hall would have said something. it would have leaked out.

The bottom line is, Carson made fun of Newton, and Newton was a bad sport about it. He got his feelings hurt. I also find it very interesting that Wayne Newton would imply that Johnny Carson would have him put on a hit list.....It also says alot about Newton that he would not come forward with this until after Johnny died....just grow up and learn how to take a joke already.
cmyster73 1 year ago
@cmyster73 You didn't listen carefully to the video, go back and listen again...jeesh...he made it very clear that NBC (news) had stated he would testify against the mafia (and Carson egged that on in his monologues). The hit list was created by the Mafia against those that were suspected of testifying. Were you really THAT dense not to understand what he said. If you're THAT stupid stay off the internet.

@tomaf I wish....perhaps viewing the Internet should be open to all but interacting should require a certification of intelligence.
Ramubay 3 months ago
@cmyster73 That's not what Newton said. What he said was the FBI showed him a hit list (compiled by the Mafia) with his name on it because NBC stated he would be a witness in a trial. NBC's faulty reporting put him on the hit list. By the way, this was well documented and covered years later on TV that NBC and Carson really screwed up. Its just not replayed on the Best of Carson.

When I was on the New York tour many years ago we asked an usher about Johnny Carson. His answer was that Johnny Carson was a bastard to everyone.
chairde 1 year ago
The story also goes that Johnny wanted to buy a Vegas casino, but changed the terms so many times the sellers lost interest. Wayne stepped in and made an offer which reportedly infuriated Johnny.
Johnny, who was responsible for one-third of NBC's revenues at the time, reportedly got former Nightly News' Brian Ross to do a hatchet job on Wayne, linking him to the mob.
Ross is now at ABC.

Wayne is a whiny loser.... Almost everyone 'big' in show busniess owes Carson alot for their success.. and they know it... look at Letterman, Rickles, Seinfeld and many many others..
allbu849 1 year ago
To be honest, Carson was appeared that way. He was like the David Letterman or Howard Stern of his time. He was a bitter, loathsome, chicken-hearted little man who couldn't hack it in the entertainment business, so they settled for presenting them. Bitter at lacking the talent to be an actor or singer on their own, they pick on those they can get away with picking on. Newton would have rang his bell. He's a real man and an honorable one for standing up to the schoolyard bully.
JackOfferlott 1 year ago
Carson had great class....was not perfect. No one is. Newton exudes class also. With a strong character on top of it. But a mistake was made in hammering Wayne. ...He could have been a more polite in the office...but was fed up and ticked off a good while. So he flexed some muscles. And it did the trick. ...Asking Johnny 'nicely' to quit it - is not very convincing.

petclark1 1 year ago 9
@petclark1 - and then some x 10.
Alvin4NY 1 year ago

NFitalianGuy 2 years ago

RosaElliott 2 years ago 3
@RosaElliott "..if you spent the last 50 years of your life sining, you probably would not have a voice left.."
.
I've wondered if Wayne took measures to intentionally make his voice huskier. He was known for his high, "girlish" voice when he was younger - which is what Carson poked fun at. Theorizing maybe he got sick of being kidded about it. He once had a superb singing voice, a shame if he deliberately destroyed it.

With Leno, he was a stand up so you really felt like he was just kidding.
thunderstruck665 2 years ago
Most of you who are making comments against Wayne Newton most likely never met the man. We weren't there to see firsthand what occurred between Newton and Johnny Carson. I believe that both men were incredible talents in their respective careers, but frankly couldn't get along. If Carson did offend Newton, then you can't blame the man for standing up for his honor. Whatever did take place is between the two star celebrities and their lawyers (in other words, the people with the money).

Why wouldn't he go and see Carson or phone him BEFORE contacting his agents, attorneys, etc? Who the hell did he think he was to threaten Carson with violence to get his way? Everytime I've heard Newton speak he is high on drama and very low on witnesses. I believe he is full of it.

somewhatlongdong 2 years ago 5
@somewhatlongdong - Horseshit, he walked right into Johnny's office and dealt with him straight to his face. The jokes stopped, but that tactics didn't. That was Wayne's point. Wayne thought the matter had been handled, and he had settled it like a man. Johnny made it a War...or people at NBC. More likely Johnny because of the Vegas Association. Johnny was in Vegas as much as Wayne.
Alvin4NY 1 year ago 2
@somewhatlongdong Did you actually view this video or are you really that stupid? Newton said for a year and a half he tried to contact Carson through every possible means and when that failed he went to Carson's office PERSONALLY and told Carson TO HIS FACE to stop with the jokes or he would kick his ass. Newton is 6'4 well over 250lbs he would have squashed Carson like a bug.
Etnalleb 1 year ago 2
@Etnalleb Are you Wayne Newton? How do you know it happened as Newton tells it? And why did Newton wait till after Carson died to start trashing him? Carson was 100 times the entertainer Newton was and this whole thing just reeks of petty jealousy and revenge against a dead man.
gfrog2000 8 months ago
@gfrog2000 FYI I happened to be one of the people Newton passed on his way down to Carson's office as i worked for a courier service at that time and Newton was friendly to EVERY-ONE even the peons unlike Carson who was a arrogant ,Narcissist . This particular day Newton did not stop or greet any-one but looked like he was on a mission to kill some-one , it's to bad he didn't. As for talent gfrog you show your stupidity by saying Carson had more than W.N get real.
Etnalleb 8 months ago
@Etnalleb
ChudFapper 8 months ago
@ChudFapper It;s one thing to have a few jokes taken at one's expense but Carson was doing this on a regular basis and the jokes were assaulting W.N as a person and not as a entertainer. Where you a close confident of J.C? were you actually around the man when he was off stage and unbridled to say and do what he wanted to do? I saw his arrogance and pride 1st hand and i would say the only person with more pride & arrogance is Donald Trump... that does say much for Mr Carson.
Etnalleb 8 months ago
@Etnalleb My eyes glaze over very quickly when an anonymous poster to a YouTube video starts claiming "inside" knowledge. In so far as talent goes, Carson was on national TV several times a week for about 35 years. Wayne Newton was/is a freak show in Vegas that only blue-haired old women get excited about. Newton is not in the same area code as Carson.
gfrog2000 7 months ago
@gfrog2000 What area code are you from Mars? It's widely known that Wayne Newton IS Mr.Las Vegas and was one of the Highest paid entertainers in the World. He owned at one time practically all of Las Vegas and i'll make any kind of bet you want that when Newton dies Vegas will shut it's light's off in honor of his many years of being one of it's most famous stars. Carson was nothing more than a copy of Donald Trump a fucking Carnival Barker.
