I just found an Al Jolson version of this. It is a pretty fun song. Although it doesn't promote abstinence as much as I hoped it would. You really didn't change the lyrics all that much.

Al Jolson did many great songs. Some are in public domain. I am trying to figure out some more of his songs to do again. I just took out the hare and chicken references and added the civilization and oasis verses. It was also a big hit for Ian Whitcomb. Many of the old songs still sound fresh. Thanks.

Thanks. This is one I remember from the 1960s when it was brought back by Ian Whitcomb. It also was an Al Jolson song before that. Jolson had a big rebound in the 1940s and many of his songs were popular then. He had some great songs which could easily be brought back again. There is a site with a list of Public Domain songs where I do some research also. Thanks again.
