You can tell by the motion of the swing of the ball that it is fake because of the mass of the ball. The mass can be told by its motion during the swing and its motion upon impact with the man; should it have been a ball of larger mass, the impact force would have propelled the man a very long way, and hardly any of the reaction force would be exerted upon the ball.
