He never dies in the movie. He did, however, leave the Congress for Dover, only to return on July 1 to vote. Admittingly, he was in better physical condition than in the movie.
@hisoj The real Ceasar Rodney did have cancer but he was a tough guy in the Deleware militia at the time. They had to get him off the battlefield to get him to the vote on time. And he wasn't quite 40 years old.
@devorahacts You are correct and wrong at the same time. Caesar Rodney suffered from asthma and cancer on his face. He was 55 when he died in 1784. He was not on a battlefield when he himself rode to the Continental Congress (which is quite famous, and you should know). he WAS a brigadier general in Delaware's milita. He was in Dover when he got the word and thus traveled eighty miles.
@Sto0pidPenguinPro I had heard from a pretty famous historian that he was indeed on a battlefield. I didn't say that he didn't have asthma, just that he did have cancer. I think age-wise I am mixing him with someone else. Thanks.
Franklin was a multi-faceted genius of the first rank. But, for example, when he published his 'kite and lightning' experimental results, a few dozen people around the world tried to replicate it, and got fatally electrocuted. Oops tilt. He was a miracle of self-promotion, never entering or leaving his printing office without a double armload of prop documents to be either 'printed' or 'delivered'. He had the angle, and genius, and he worked it.
According to "Zeitgeist", quoting Benjamin Franklin, the primary cause of the Revolutionary War: Britain outlawed our currency, and insisted we rely on currency loaned, at interest, from the Bank of England.
yes. If you listen to theantiterrorist he says we never actually broke away from england, we've always been a country indebted to england and still are to this day. Tell that to the man on the street and he'll say you're nuts. I just like the idea of this movie. What actually happened, happened. We're here now and we all feel strongly about restoring our human rights and constitution before we lose everything.
@oz22verizon we are indebted to England for nothing. They were tyrants all because we American-Britains lived in a faraway continent. We kicked their ass in two wars. I'd say more than enough to clear whatever we MIGHT have owed them.
Yes, I agree, although we're in worse shape now, because the individual states can't decide for themselves as easily as they could back then, because the Federal government has sprawled out and taken much more centralized control over the entire country than was originally intended(as the Constitution was supposed to chain down this beast and limit it's scope and power down to a hand full of tasks that are necessary and unavoidable without some sort of central mechanism) because of ignorance.
it's funny that this was the last picture the head of the studio jack warner was involved in...
alas, this musical is underrated, for it was witty and subtly weaved the genuine quotes into the ensemble... ben franklin is class! :D

I had only seen the part up until 6:27. The version that I had didn't include 6:28-7:53.
Now that I watch it the beginning of it (with the dog and the rum) is hilarious.
How quickly it broke down.

I love how he loses it when they call him a lawyer... I mean, he is a lawyer. How ghastly. That's a capitol offense if I ever saw one.

@hisoj Actually Caesar Rodney wasn't that old, his cancer was advanced so much though he was very frail.
