It is HiFi, but not stereo. RCA developed the Phototone system in 1931 for the movie industry and from that moment it was possible to record sounds between 30 and 15,000 Hz. The famous Victor 24xxx series contains a number of early HiFi recordings. The big problem was that the average gramophone reproducer couldn't cope with both the extended bass and treble, resulting in excessive record wear. After 10 plays records were completely worn out. So they had to go back to limited frequencies.

I agree with this being falsely labeeled as true stereo. I recorded this and looking at the spectro graph: mono. The real test, invert both channels and then mix them in mono. If it is true stereo, you will hear something extracted into mono. If it is really a mono mix, all you hear is distortion. Well I got the later.

@TheMarkc The speculation @ the time (I've heard) was the plane Miller was flying in, over the English Channel at night, was unfortunately underneath a bomber that dumped its load of undelivered bombs into the channel prior to landing for safety purposes. Maybe only a rumor, but I thought I would pass this on.
