One of the reasons why people might think you were handicapped at first look, might be because of the extra grunting sounds you sometimes make when expressing yourself through ASL.
Now I don't know anything about being deaf, but is that just an old habit of yours? 'Cause not doing it might help close-minded people to not perceive you wrong at first hand.
No offence, I really don't know anything about the subject of how deaf people express themselves.
@TheRealMidori Oh my mom and one of my sisters do know signs but not the rest especially none of any relatives. Good thing I can read lips sometime but still.. :-)
@seekgeo haha, I would do the same thing, if that happen to me. Speak of grocery store; the worker tried talk to my sister, she told her that she's deaf then she write on the pad notes. After my sister left, worker asked me 'do you needs something?' I reply 'I'm deaf, so I couldn't speak that well.' then worker continue talked, I was like um didn't you hear what I just said? I found this ironic. I means, what different between my sister and I? So, I told her 'Do you realized that I'm deaf, I ca
I'm pretty sure most deaf through that the sane thing like I've been through too since I'm deaf. But, I hate the most when people found out that I'm deaf and they try make it loud enough for me to hear. One time, my brother's friend shout to called me, I was e I'm not stupid; I'm deaf, so can you low your voice. It's annoying me the most when hearing thought deaf can hear that clear if they use loud voice.
@superboysoccer Ha ha - totally know how you feel. One time, I was at grocery store and someone tried to talk and I asked her to repeat so I can see if I can read her lips. As soon as she realized I'm deaf, instead of talking like normal, she'd shout out too loud that miles away can hear!
Of course I still couldn't understand her cuz hard to read lips when one yells out too loud. So at the end, I asked her to write down instead.
I had to crack up at this video, I get the same comments when I tell people I am deaf. I either get the "I'm so sorry" or I get "Oh.....can you hear me now" while the slow every word down.
I completely understand you, when I tell people I'm deaf and that I've ggot a cochlear implant, they say "oh poor little girl, so young, so much to live and deaf? This should happen only with old people. How do you go to college? How do you do your daily chores? HOW DO YOU DRIVE?" and I POLITELY reply "Well I can do anything, i could be blind or in a wheelchair and still I could do anything" I don't know why people think this way.
lol hahaha, Geo.. thats soooooo true! Some people just don't even think that we are fine the way we are.. makes them ever more nuts to ask if we are happy and healthy just cuz we are deaf? Don't ever leave youtube one day ever.. you've already brought a lot people good laughs here. :)
@Devilious27 Ha, thank you! I will keep that in mind about not ever stop doing videos. :-D I always enjoy getting to know you more based on comments, you rock!
not to offend you in any way, but r u gay? i mean that in the serious way too. If you're not, sorry cuz im just wondering but if you are than that is completely fine with me.
makes me think about a few years ago. I was about 25, my brother was 10. (30 and 15 now) We went to see a captioned movie. The ticket tearer said to him "How brave, so young. Taking care of her!" Bro said "What the heck? I'm just here to see a movie with my sister. Stupid!" and walked away. I was so proud of him!
haha dude this is SMV and I know what you have been through on here. I have went through it for so long and I get a few comments like yours but never Yikes. I swear deafness is the most misunderstood disability ever and will always continue to be. We have proved we can make videos and can do things just as good or equal as the hearing people or even better. =)
i watch your whole video.i was cracked up about "yike" honest. i have never had anyone say yike to me. i think its weird and not making sense for saying yikes about deaf issue lol. and i bet Jes laughed when you told him about it. i know he know people are nuts and always feel sorry for deaf people.the rain outside and unhappy and unhealthy makes me laugh. haha good one :). one more thing.deaf and hearing people are SAME! NO DIFFERENT!!!!
I've had strangers ask: "How long have you been in a wheelchair?" and then, when I answer: "All my life," answer with: "Oh, I'm so sorry you had a sad childhood."
B-whu? As if, just because you could walk, *your* life was nothing but sunshine and lollipops?
@CapriUni Oh my, lmao! I love how you said "sunshine and lollipops" - Ha ha, you rock! These peeps never cease to amaze me. o.O Just because we are different than them doesn't mean we are NOT happy about it, oy. *rolls*
I have to remember this "sunshine and lollipops", you made my night! :-D
@seekgeo I actually never said these things... I usually don't think of a good response until 3 days later. :-/ But I keep them in mind for next time. Another option:
"All my life. And how long have you been rude and clueless?"
I love the oreos.... hahaha! It kinda bugs me though that you have a different shirt on at the end, but simply because I'm crazy like that :p
Its very true about the stereotype though, people just don't realize that the "hearing impaired" (how I loath that term!) aren't impaired at all. Life continues and you are obviously able of handling yourself!
Just a quick note the closed captions for us "sign impaired" aren't working, at least not for me. The transcription is working though so Idk...
@angelfish22093 I checked and the CC works just fine so you want to re-check. Maybe it was down earlier, who knows. Guess you didn't like my other video "Fire Evaluation In Portland" just cuz I wear different shirts? #LOL Yes, you are crazy but I still like you. :-D
Oreo used to be my favorite snack but not anymore though.. still like it but now yogurt and fruits are my fav! YUM.
Education! Education! Education! All of those who support Deaf culture and ASL need to take these "yikes moments" as an opportunity to educate people on WHY it is so wrong to pity, fear, or otherwise show prejudice to the Deaf... Only way to fight ignorance.
@turk223 Yes, it's all about education but not always work, it's all depend on each person. Some would be willing to LEARN while others will stay being ignorant forever. Like in video I shared how one guy was going on about unhappy and unhealthy. So I had a chance to educate then he fired right back to me "I bet you sound funny."
So I immediately knew he wasn't interested to LEARN. No need to waste my time. :-)
Favorited!!! Geo, this is easily one of the best ones you've done, it made me laugh and cringe at the same time. It's so true and the "I want you to have.... blah blah.... type of life" is frustrating, they don't get that we're rolling our eyes at them. "I'm sorry" does make me a little tad mad. Peeps say I sound like I'm from Boston or have some exotic accent. I'm upset about Boston (I'm a rebel girl!) but not exotic. I'll take exotic. YIKES!!!!! Yikes! Yikes.
@RiverBirch1967 Oh my, I remember you telling me one time how someone assumed you're from Boston. I guess I would never understand why or how would someone think based on accents, that's where we're from. It's like we never travel or something? I guess to make things easier is for you to LIVE in Boston right now, he he.
"I'm sorry" gets old, I frickin' hate it so much, totally with you. And now with Yikes and unhappy/unhealthy.. oh gosh, I'm speechless.
EXACTLY,. I have hard time to explain.. Wait for me to written a note. they say Oh, no no.. walk away from me. I need your attention to find a food shelve. I am shorter lady. DAMN it!
I bet THEY sound funny. That'd be the first thing out of my mouth if I was in your position! That's just crazy. Some people just don't think before they speak.
@Sxel92 So true, there are some people just don't know to react properly. Sometimes when they feel the need to react so fast, they don't realize they'd say stupid things. I wonder why he immediately said "I bet you sound funny" after I tried to educate about happy/healthy. Maybe he felt the need to defend his own stupidity in the first place? Hmm..
HAHAHA, wow you are right! I am hearing, but after watching this video I feel like things are getting muffled?.....OMG DOES IT TRAVEL THROUGH THE INTERNET?! lol Your humour is so awesome. i LOVE your impression of the blonde hearing girl :P keep it up!!!
@BombshellSwirls Aw, thank you! :-D Sometime it helps when something that pisses me, I *had* to figure ways to turn 'em into humor kind of way. So we can look back and laugh at these, he he.
I heard some stories like that though about praying for your "disease" to heal. If someone offers to pray for me, I'd say "instead to pray for my deafness, it'd be nice if you pray for me winning the lottery!" ;-)
@MacFreak1979 Ohyea, had some people went "ah I see" or "Oh okay" then walked off. Maybe, they realized they couldn't communicate with us and didn't want to bother with paper/pen, etc? Who knows.
@slygirls09 "What planet are you from?" Oh gosh, now that's just funny. LMAO.. gotta love these weird questions. I wonder if that will be my next question to deal with! o.O
@CrazyAKACarlos Funny when that person said how he wanted me to have a very happy and healthy life. I realized that is an ignorance remark so I tried to educate him. But next thing out of his mouth was "I bet you sound funny." So I knew he wasn't definitely worth my time to bother at all.
Ohyea, how true that some people tried so hard to respect but in the wrong way of saying it.
YIKE!!,... there rain outside and you are eating Oreos!!!
One lady at Boeing where I used to work have said that to me "I have been deaf for a couple of weeks,.. now I am so glad it was just temporary and now I can hear again. Oh gosh now I can understand how you feel. It was awful!!" almost had tear on her eyes. Iwas just staring at her with my mouth wide open. Honest, I just couldnt think at all. She eventually walked away, HAHAHAHA, now its too funny to look it back.
@deafrocket Ha ha.. oreo used to be my favorite snack but not anymore. I eat 'em once a while when I'm really crave for sweet, that's it. My new fav snack is now yogurt and fruits.
"It was awful"???? #LOL oh boy, that's horrible way to say! o.O
To play devils advocate, I *hope* they meant yikes as in 'wow'. Still stupid, but not quite as mean as it could be taken. Stupidity knows no limits; it's truly universal. Love your vids as always :)
