  • oh how cute, sure reminds me of yesterdays (days when I was younger). She has that same excitement just like when a child opens that one present they wanted for Christmas!

  • LOL I love how Howie calls the judge "smart guy."

  • Yeah, he definitely has that kind of face, doesn't he? Especially when he's frozen in time!

  • When Howie unfreezes him, the spelling bee guy is like, WTF?

  • I'm guessing I flunked out early in the spelling bees, because I'd never heard of that word before! Hope Howie would've bailed my butt out too!

  • Psh this is why my phone has spell check!

  • Good thing I wasn't the judge because I probably would of mispronouced laodicean.

  • What's the point of spelling bees anymore? Memorizing obscure words like that sounds about as useful as memorizing pi to the 100th digit. We have spell check now!!

  • In a post apocalyptic world, these kids in the spelling bee will be the only ones who know how to spell anything! Me, I'll be lost.

  • @ifIcouldmakeyoumine I'm already lost most of the time.

  • I love spelling if it's done right...lol

  • Ads like this that pluck the strings of my memory always play well with me. Spellings bees were one of those in class events that took us away from the daily grind of a teacher on par with that guy in Ferris Bueller. Clever way to pitch a site.

  • I'm lazy - so what does it actually mean? lol

  • I had to look the word laodicean up just to see what it was, I don't remember spelling bees using words like that when I was a child, but I'm sure they did.

  • We had spelling bees in our classroom every week it seems and a big one for the whole school every year, I wish more people were better at spelling these days!

  • Who cares if you can spell "laodicean"?

  • I think spellcheck is stealing my brain sells...cells.

  • We never had any type of spelling bee contests when I was in school. But if we had, I would have sure loved seeing Howie show up!

  • We had them in my school but you had to be really "fast on the draw" because the time to answer was limited to like 10 seconds or so.

  • only ten seconds? that sounds excessive

  • @exciteablechild I don't remember having spelling bee's either. Maybe it's because I was bad in spelling lol

  • We didn't either. Kids today don't even have to know how to spell thanks to the computers...

  • Spell checkers aside, I can't help wondering how many people *can* spell "Laodicean"? oh, BTW- my spell checker doesn't have that word in it.

  • I'm with Whiskers, thank goodness for spell check on our computers because I would be lost without it...lol.

  • I never made it to the spelling bee's either.. all I know is thank goodness someone invented spellcheck on the computer.

  • I never made it to the spelling bee, well maybe the first round but after that...it was for the smarter kids. It really makes you think as parents these days on how educated our kids are thru the parenting. I love watching happy endings, so this was really cute.

  • My kids are in grade 2 and grade 4, and they make them bring home flash cards with the spelling words on them every week. It's crazy!

  • Same here - seems like they are learning 4 times as much as what we had to in school!

  • Such a cute and sweet little girl, glad she got a "easy" word, still have never heard of the other word. I guess I need to attend a spelling bee too even hear some of those difficult words that I know I would never be able to spell.

  • Why could I see Howie starting a new spelling bee game show after watching this? All I know is I wouldn't qualify for it as spelling was not one of my finer subjects

  • I'm not sure if a spelling bee show would work... people today mostly seem more interested in shortcuts than actual learning

  • The judge is giving Howie that look: who does this guy think he is? Good job girl.

  • Well kksmom92, I'm on my 40' and never heard that word too. Poor girl, I guess buydotcom is a much funny and useful word.

  • Uau, Howie just appears so fast ...he really wanted to test the girl and guess what, she's a winner and so is Howie :)

  • SuperBeckalicious: Never mind a shopper, in ten years, that little girl will take over for Howie.

  • That little girl is gonna be a shopper! Hahaha....

  • This ad has to be my favorite Buydotcom spot, ever. It has everything - nostalgia, a cute kid, humor, and Howie. Oh, and it conveys all the info, too. If only all commercials were this cool.

  • hensorseman, I know what you mean...watching this brought back so many memories of my own childhood spelling bees. Never got words as east as "buydotcom" though.

  • "We have a winner!" Too fun - and yes, sweetie, that judge does look pretty put out at the interruption.

  • The judge to Howie's side has an "oh no you din't" look on his face when he breaks in, doesn't he? LOL!

  • It's sad... here I'm in my 30's and I never even heard of that word. Needless to say I know I would of lost that spelling bee.

  • I think one of the reasons ads like this have so much appeal is that they stir up memories. I can't spell worth a flip, but I wanted to win my 4th grade spelling bee. Studied like a demon and won with "ubiquitous." Now I know my teacher was the demon to give us a word like that in the 4th grade!

  • Brings back memories for me too geo. My word was pachyderm. Fortunately I'd just heard it at the Ringling Brothers Circus and looked it up. Buydotcom's ad people are pretty smart to put together campaigns with this kind of associative value. Good stuff.

  • I'm a sucker for these episodic ad campaigns. Butdotcom does a great job of branding itself with Howie as a spokesman and these skits to highlight its products and free shipping. Honestly, Internet ads are catching my eye much more than TV campaigns these days.

  • The look on the guy's face while he's frozen is priceless!

  • Howie could use that word in 10 different sentences and i would still have no clue what it means, lol!!

  • Now if Howie would just do something about that spelling bee guy's bowtie!

  • I'm always amazed by the level that kids are learning at in elementary school. But, then they become teenagers and I'm not sure what happens. It's kind of sad.

  • Would've been nice to have had Howie around for the spelling tests when I was in school...

  • I could probably win the spelling bee if I had someone providing me with outside assistance too. (Um, maybe.)

  • I've seen the kids happy when they get em right in a spelling bee, but her, 'Yessss!!' was pretty amusing :)

  • It's amazing just how smart kids are these days. I wish I could have claimed to be that smart at her age.

  • Couldn't even say what that word means, let alone spell it - lulz. ^^

  • These spelling bee kids are hardcore. Just sayin yo.

  • I'm 40, and if someone asked me to spell that word, I would seriously brown my trousers.

  • that's a cute one! I'd be sweating bullets too or go into a full blown anxiety attack! LoL

  • heee we have a winner! I agree that word is hard.

  • When I was that age, I was spelling things like "house" and "school". Clearly, I never won a spelling bee in my academic career.

  • I'm not sure which is worse - not knowing the words for the spelling be or not knowing some of the answers on Are you smarter than a 5th grader.

At least with the spelling words, you can fake it.

  • Can you spell 'spellcheck'? Cuz that's about the only way I'd be able to win a spelling bee, so kudos to that little girl if she really is the winner from this year.

  • haha professorbinns I'd have to have my phone in my pocket and try the suggested text in a message!

  • "Can you give me its origin?"

"Buy(dot)com was created out of awesomeness!"

  • cute kid - love how she spells it out in her hand. That is one wicked hard word to boot!

  • She doesn't look nervous at all. If it were me, I'd be sweating bullets. LOL

  • Saveme, I just tried to google it and I'm not sure if it's her or not.. hard to tell. But I saw the spelling bee as well, and she is definitely based off her if that's not actually the little girl we saw!

  • Did we ever figure out if this IS the actual little girl who won the national spelling bee this year? She looks and acts just like her from what i can remember..

  • I've looked at the word at least 20 times and I still cannot spell it without cheating, kudo's to the children of the future who are way smarter than me :P

  • I love this ad, the little girl is so cute and excited when she wins. Howie for the win!

  • Very nice Howie, loved how you saved the little girl and into winning the spelling bee. I want to know what that word means now.

  • Yeah - what ever happened to words like "elephant" for kids that young?!

I have never even heard of buydotcom before seeing this commerical on TV! Looks awesome though! :)

  • Lol seriously marky, I didn't get very far when I was doing spelling bees at that age, but I don't remember dealing with words quite that hard!

  • I guess I would fail the show are you smarter than a 5th grader since I never even heard of that word before and she knew how to spell it!

  • I've never heard of that word before today either...LoL I'm actually pretty good at spelling, but that word would have made me lose in a spelling bee.

  • I'll have to remember how to spell that word for the next time I play scrabble with the inlaws - that one will blow em' away! Neat commercial anyhow...

  • I probably will remember the word now, but not the spelling. I never was good at spelling in school, I think that was my worst subject.

  • Very, very creative commercial and using the format they use in spelling bees. I liked it alot!! And of course Howie being absolutely cute!!

  • If my daughter ever gets far during a spelling bee I would have to have someone else help train her as I wouldn't even know how to pronounce half the words!

  • I like all of the easy words, some of the words in spelling bees today are crazy hard!

  • My Dad used to keep us entertained on long car trips with the spelling bee thing. I always suspected he made words up, but he handled the whole thing with enthusiasm a lot like Howie's. Sure made the time pass.

  • Heck, you figure most kids today would just look the word up online rather than learning it themselves. I always like to see these spelling bee contests. Gets them thinking. Nice pairing of ideas in this commercial.

  • I can spell "buydotcom," but that other word? Never even heard it before.

  • I really love his cadence when he uses it in a sentence. Pure Howie goodness.

  • Funny how things stick with you over the years. I remember winning a spelling bee in grade school with the word "pachyderm."

  • I know what you mean. My winning word was "invincible."

  • I think this is my favorite buydotcom ad. Cute kids, Howie, and free shipping - what more could you want?

  • I used to love spelling bees when I was a kid, but we never had to spell anything like that first word!

  • LOL That takes me back. When my fourth grade teacher couldn't think of anything else to do with us, she'd have a spelling bee. Of course we didn't get to shop for cool stuff, but at least it was better than most of the rest of the stuff she had us do.

  • I love watching these Howie commercials, and all the funny quirks he has that makes us all laugh too!

  • I agree with the words that the kids have to spell these days, I don't even remember seeing them in high school. But I like how Howie can get into any situation, and have a solution.

  • i will never get how these kids can remember to spell all those crazy words.

  • Me either. Funny commercial though! That little girl got lucky in the end for sure! :)

  • Cute kid. My brother's a better speller though.

  • I don't think I could have spelled laodicean, either. Great ad!

  • I still love the look on the girl's face when she wins!

  • I would have hated to bee at that contest without Howie to save the day!!

  • Well, I definitely love free shipping & great deals, no matter how you spell them!

  • Should a kid not old enough for a credit card be that familiar with an online shopping site? ;) Good thing she was in this case!

  • I need Howie's magic snap to stop time today & let me get everything done & still have time to play!

  • Couldn't we all? Just stop time for a day, let us get everything done, then have the rest of the day to play...

  • I never knew they had free shipping offers too. I thought that was just a amazon thing. Now I'll have 2 places to shop for things. I hate paying shipping.

  • Shipping costs are the real evil of shopping online. You find a great price and then pay so much to get it to you, the deal's not worth it!

  • I'm so glad I don't have to do spelling bee's anymore. Of course I never got to far with them anyways.

  • The girl's little 'yes,' at the end is so cute :D

  • :howie's time stop thing reminds me of a movie. Guy had a watch that stopped time, engraved: "Time waits for one man"

  • "Can you use it in a sentence" - Seriously? You're in a spelling bee, with a simple word.. Ah well, anything for a commercial.

  • Is this like a call-a-friend lifeline on a spelling bee? Interesting twist ;)

  • Howie, can you teach me to freeze time like that?

  • Next thing you know, Howie will show up to help some kid on his math test!

  • I could see that as a commercial... he will show how you can save money (math) at buy . com

  • I think Laodicean (hope I spelled that right!) was the winning word for the 2009 Scripps spelling bee. That girl didn't need any help from Howie ;)

  • Are you serious about this being the winning word from the Scripps spelling bee? If so that makes the commercial even funnier!!! :)

  • Why didn't Howie show up for any of my spelling bees when I was in school? I could have used some help!

  • Howie saved her for that strange and difficult word. Well done Howie!!

  • I wish that when I was in school I was allowed to spell buy (dot) com at my spelling bee. Maybe I would have won.

  • I gotta ask. at 0:17 is Howie saying "millions" or "billions"? Sure sounds like "billions" to me

  • I think it's millions. But if I listen one more time and my husband hears it, he's going to think he's getting a flat screen tv!

  • I probably woulda spelled Buydotcom wrong.

  • I don't know about Howie in spandex. I think he'd be better as a green hornet type.. just add a hat and mask to his suit and get him a driver named Kato

  • Hmm. I didn't know that "dot" counted as a letter for a spelling bee? Oh well. Gotta love Howie no matter what. I agree with Zilch - I think I would pay good money to see howie in some spandex!!

  • beckyb, I guess when Howie is the judge, anything goes!

  • Howie explains it all just in a few sentences. He is perfect in this play role.

  • Y'know, if Howie's gonna keep saving the day like this, he's gonna need a spandex costume, a mask and a cape!

  • I don't understand where the original word would be legit for a spelling be, so that kid was lucky Howie showed up.

  • really? Haven't you ever seen a spelling bee before? They always have obscure words on the list, especially if it's a qualifier to go to a national competition or whatever.

  • That's right. and the farther along in the competition, the more obscure the words get.

  • Too cute - how would Howie pick which kid to 'rescue' in this case? Hahaha....

  • Yeah, that bowtie kind of scares me.

  • haha Howie froze the guy right in the middle of him giving a "who the heck are you?" look!

  • Woah. A bow tie? Is this 1979 or 2009?

At least howie and the little spelling champ look great!

  • Laodicean... must mean someone from Laodicea?

  • yup, as in the Laodicean church mentioned in Revelation.

  • I agree that is a weird word. I'll have to look that one up for sure. Have never even heard of it!

The little girl is just too cute for words :c)

  • ok that word is wicked crazy...lmbo

another great commercial...I am starting to get addicted to watching them here.

  • aww I love this one.

I don't think he gave up stand up completely. He sure seems busy these days though with Deal or No Deal and these fabulous buydotcom commercials. I've always love him - he cracks me up!

  • So does Howie not do stand-up any more. Is being a spokesman his major gig? He's good at it, but I'd hate to think he's giving up performing. A seriously funny dude.

  • No, Howie still does standup. He's currently on tour right now in fact. If you go to his website, you can see a list of show dates and cities. I haven't seen him in person yet, but I really want to!

  • Wow. I had to Google that word just to figure out what it meant!

  • Howie is soo bold:) Well, the girl isn't bothered with that.

  • Howie and the little girl make a perfect team. They don't miss a beat.

  • That kid has poise! To me, child actors are amazing! My kids, one whom is about her age, would never manage to look so natural OR remember her lines!

  • She doesn't seem intimidated by Howie appearance. She's a winner.

  • She's adorable and she plays along with Howie.

  • Looks like that girl was the very first contestant. Think Howie stuck around to help everyone else? That would only be fair!

  • Yes we have spelling bees here in Canada. I bet they'd be more popular if we had Howie show up at them.

  • Are spelling Bee's a USA thing? I'm not sure we have them here in canada!

  • Free shipping! Interesting that that's the part the girl seemed to recognize. lol

  • Aw, look. They saved Howie a seat!

  • I never participated in a contest like this as a child but it's amazing how kids just spell the words so fast. Howie...do you know how to spell ??

  • They didn't pronounce Laodicean the same. The reader said "Lay-ow..." and the speller said "Lay-ah..." Hmmm.

  • I don't know who was more excited in this video, Howie or the little girl. lol Great job guys!

  • Howie, definitely Howie. He's far too easily excitable over simple things.

  • It would've been a bummer to miss that one (buydotcom). "What word did you get out on?" "Buydotcom."

  • wow nice save there Howie, I couldn't imagine trying to spell that word, I never heard of it, let alone a little girl. Buydotcom has all kinds of cool gadgets don't they? Cute kid!

  • OMG, I clicked on this video link through a recommendation and haven't stopped laughing yet! Howie saves the day!

  • whoa i'm gonna have to check out the flat screen tv's over there. my husband wants a new one and with xmas around the corner i might snap a good deal. awesome.

  • we have a winner

    he he...cute

  • free shipping is always good! Shipping can be killer especially cross country

  • H-O-W-I-E. This is great!

  • Is Laodicean really in the official spelling bee word list? Do they use proper names?

  • Adorable! (I meant Howie, not the kid ;) )

  • I just asked my seven year old to spell laodicean.

    "uhmm..... l-a-y-o-w-d-a-y -s-e-e-a-n?"

I wonder how much spelling bee participants study for these things. Like, how many hours a day they spend going over word lists...

  • How does he freeze time like that? Wish I could do that, too!

  • My son and I love to watch the great big spelling bees on TV - if Howie showed up he'd be over the moon!

  • I wonder if Howie's head ever gets cold - I'd be buying a hat if I were him.

  • I dunno... I really like the judge's bowtie! It suits him.
