  • Legends...should I say more?!

  • legends :))

  • Love it.......These two guys are pure genious.

  • I love the talkbox work on this track!

  • I LOVE THE DAN!

  • Obviously a work of art from the untouchable Fagan and Becker, and im a Metalhead.

  • it's not about haitians (until she gets zombied out), its about people who go there to divorce....

  • He shouts, she bites..

  • ahaha so many haitians in south florida.. i love this song

  • This song has the lyrics with the most sparse words I've ever heard to tell a story. It 's amazingly awesome every time I hear it!

  • Great minds think alike. ;-).

  • BIG SONG!!!!!!! A LOVED!!!

  • Love this song!!!!

  • Bet song ever by Steely Dan

  • Thanks for this-awesome post.

  • One person had a Haitian Divorce !

  • This holds up very much, also due to the great state of the art production. I wonder is there put a compressor on it, before it was published on YT?

  • @andzwe I think that the "compressor" as you put it is the effect of digital processing, I have the original versions of this on record, and they don't suffer from the "compessed" effect. Regardless of what people who "don't" know will say, MP3/4 or even CD quality cannot match a perfect analogue recording played on quality equipment. I have worked in audio most of my working life, and I know what I'm talking about !

  • Denny your right that this is a poor version of this song, but one of the unique recordings I've heard. It is better on vinyl.

  • @supertechsummercamp No your just need better speakers.

  • Still love Steely Dan!!! So sexy...love it! Thanks for posting.

  • steely dan...its wot musik is all about....

  • Thank Heaven for the genius that is Steely Dan.

  • Hey Steely Dan ... What's goin on these days as far as you performing and all that? Meanwhile, know that I've been a fan of yours since day one.

  • Love all Steely's music!!

  • Dan rules

  • where the fuck is melegorm?

  • To aknowneemus ~ Good question!? Last heard yelling, "Yes, there's gas in the car" or something like that....melegorm disappeared quite a while back. His Steely Dan uploads with the cool art were a labour of love and are much missed by me and many other 'Dan' fans too, I'm sure. The channel is gone but not forgotten. Hats off to melegorm for all his efforts, some of which can still be seen at 'Dailymotion', uploaded by GGG40

    ♪♫♥²↑⁀⁀☼ ;-j

  • @ELGROOVER i'm pretty sure hes "danielaragao" now

  • sounds soooo much better on vinyl, but thanks for the post!

  • The Track is good, but too much compression on alot of parts. I think the engineer did a very bad job! Just my 2 cents!

  • Seen 'em twice in concert, and buying tickets tomorrow for a show in Indy! Brilliant, and completely original! Too bad it doesn't take talent to make music these days!

  • @4cbd You are the lucky one. I have waited since the seventies to see them and when they eventually played in the UK I was in the US. But everything comes to those who wait. I am going to see them at Interlochen in Michigan August 15. I cannot bloody wait.

  • @skol56 Congrats!! I'm sure you'll think it was "worth the wait!!" The first time I saw them, at the Shoreline Amphitheater, south of San Francisco ('93), Boz Scaggs was in the area, and spontaneously joined them onstage for Reelin' In The Years, and a couple of others. Hope your concert produces the good memories mine have!!

  • i liked steele dan a long time ago, but did not know their name. i just like that sound. they are cool.

  • What a fantastic Reggae-Jazz crossover. This track is a piece of art, thanks for posting man:)

  • One of my favorite Dan Of Steel songs

  • i play drums but this drummer is kicking ass

  • When starting a road trip I always had this playing on the tape deck. Ahh it takes me back, love it

  • Aaaaah ....simply an awesome song!!

  • Who's this kinky so and so? ;)

  • This comes from an era of musical integrity and production value that can never and will never be equalled or beaten

  • @MrOskrat

    Yes I agree.

  • Best part of the song is when they go into the instrumental at the end.

  • Sheer QUALITY

  • one of the very best EVER!!!!the solo after 4.45 just makes you cry!!!

  • Oh God ! the production, "i mean" the production...wow ^_^

  • wat an awsome lick and the drummer is bad ass 2 who does 4 hi hats in a row dame thats sweet!!!!!

  • If you ever get a chance to see these guys live GOOOO!

  • The Dan is a jewel!

  • This classic is a Jewel

  • with a sense of humorous and also very refine... obviously only cool people appreciate this song...

  • @indigochert awsome song love the band to im 37yrs old been lisning to it from age 14.

  • @indigochert yep your dead right m8t

    :))

  • Coooooooooooool song

  • rijamor - sure they tour all the time - they will never stop touring! I see them every year or two. You are saved!

  • These two are right up there with McCartney & Lennon, Jagger & Richards, Bacarach & David. I loved the weirdness of this when it first came out and the way lots of the lyrics didn't rhyme or make sense. The only band I never saw live - my great regret in life. Do they ever tour now?

  • absolute classic by these famous duo!!

  • one of the coolest solo's out there; finger tapping before Eddie Van Halen, but he gets all the attention; love this song (used to love EVH, too)

  • I use to go to my brother after school and play this song over and over again....It is still great

  • This song is awsome

  • Loved it as a kid, feel it as an adult - class

  • This song is ssssssick!!

  • Class.

  • wonderful for sure --up Lauderdale if the cubans haven't danced there way across the ocean with their grezzy hair..Oh papa go -what is what was --wish life was as good as it was when white folks had the upper edge--love steely dan

  • Yes, Yes. Two musical genuises.

  • you have a giy tat has a cat

  • I just don't understand it -this was Steely Dan's only hit single in Britain even though they released a slew of them - was it because of the reggae feel to the song or was it people just bought their albums in the UK? beats me.

  • still got this on vinyl. still sounds wicked. thanx 4 postin.

  • Absolute delight and pure class, I love you Steely Dan!!!

  • Love the guitar on this track. Who's the guitar player?

  • @meljr Dean Park?

  • @meljr Dean Parks (talk box) and Walter Becker. I believe that Walter also altered some of the talk box parts as well, but those parts are primarily Dean Parks.

This is off of the album 'The Royal Scam', and there were some fantastic guitarists on this album! Just fantastic!!

  • : )

  • well top that if you cant - sound world heaven

  • this is one of the best songs to help haiti. it can also help promote divorce tourism in haiti.

  • Good luck, Haitians. We're thinking about u!

  • I'm starting to wonder if they're a tougher lot than us Mainland Americans. All those people being pulled out of the rubble after two weeks, etc. Very inspiring...

  • @ArtsPatron2008 You have a strange perception of the world you inhabit. Inner strenght, resolve, can manifest from anyone. It just depends on the individual.

  • @ArtsPatron2008 Carlos Santana hahaha

  • I can't believe how many amazing tracks Steely Dan created..many i've heard as a kid thru the years not realising they were from this band until recently...

  • @ChicqueSheeer If you like what you hear, there is a stellar collection of Dan songs called 'Citizen Steely Dan' that rocks. I bought it two years ago and now I know every Dan song by heart.

  • Music was cooler and much better quality back then.

  • @DarkHalo08 wat a awsome lick and the drummer is ripping it up dame who does 4 hi hats in a row

  • no one owns them

  • @GeneraalJazzie I do they work on my farm!!

  • Extraordinaire fantastic!

  • Amazing truly wonderful piece of music arr harr!

  • I dont think they knew how brillant they were.....great group!

  • Of course they knew

  • Were? I saw them two nights ago at Massey Hall, an excellent venue in Toronto. Third row, centre aisle seat. F'in brilliant. 13 people on stage.

  • I went to the Aja show- awesome. What did they play on Thurs besides the Royal Scam album? Curious to see the difference in the set list.

  • They did their hits, some before, some after. I didn't write it down. Freakin great band.

  • Yeah I was tempted to see the Royal Scam show too... will definitely see them again

  • I was 18 in 1977. Steely dan has always been the best.Completly professional, supurb lyrics and musical craftsmanship.

  • I was three, but who would ever forget hearing the talkbox for the first time!

  • Love this song!!!

  • wish they would play these guys on the classic rock stations here in nashville!

  • I know how you feel! Here in North Carolina it's equally hopeless. I just hear the laaaame Taylor Swift and the like

  • Feel your pain,

Personally, I just sing (well) a lot of Dan at the local Karaoke Bar . Kids really dig it and they start rediscovering "70's music"-America's gift to the world and posterity!

Music in the 70's was more instinctive and soulful.

Todays music is limited by its immediate need to make a buck!

  • well said man... completely agree with u

  • My favorite Steely Dan they have so many miracles of song!!!!!

  • 26 years old, but this groups music is timeless

  • Jesus it totally shows up the "talent" of today. It's sexy, smart and easy to dance to. Thank Christ for Steely Dan.

  • Ricebeans82....I think this song is about 31 years old. It was in the charts when I was 15 if I'm not mistaken. That was in 1977

  • i am number 10000!!!!!

  • haha yay?? :-P

  • I still find this music enjoyable despite lacking any of the complexity of Yes, Genesis or Pink Floyd and thats because of its originality. Well performed honesty tunes that will always make peoples ears pick up and listen.

  • Are you off your gourd? Fagan and Becker write incredibly sophisticated and complex arrangements with very difficult progressions and harmonizations. Look at their list of session musicians- they always have the finest.

  • magic song

  • I live in nashville and they never play steely dan on any of there rock statons! god i wish they would!!

  • Probably see it as too jazzy, sophisticated. The popular rock station in Bellingham, Washington still sees fit to play them, and it's anything but sophisticated there.

  • It's a talkbox.

One of my favorite Steely Dan songs.

  • Talk box + Wha wha= One of the greatest guitar effects for a song.

  • I dont think thats a wah. It sounds like it, and i might be biased, but it sounds like the effect is off a talkbox/vocuter. Can give a similar sound, but it gives that scratchy sound, like on Frampton Comes Alive.

  • It's definitely a talk box effect, where the guitars sound from the amp is pumped through a hose into the player's mouth, and they mouth the wah. Vocoder is a keyboard based vocal synthesizer (check out Herbie Hancock doing 'I Thought It Was You' on Youtube).

  • yes he was plyng the pedal...awsome

  • was jeff (scunk) baxter playing guitar on this album/

  • the wah wah pedal fits brilliantly!!!!

  • love the great quality sound with &fmt=18, great job.

  • Awesome song lol

  • I remember my 1st BIG Stereo Sys, and the 1st record..(vynil) to PLAY was The Royal Scam w/ The Haitian Div;; "the band was Hottso"!!

  • I remember hearing this jam in the wee hours of the morning as I was standing guard duty in the Marine Corps at Camp Lejuene N.C. with the 6th Marines. Where have all the years gone?

  • Music is a very personal thing; people all have different tastes, likes and dislikes.

That said, I truly believe this is such a brilliant song, so expertly produced and presented, that I can't imagine ANYONE not enjoying it.

It's absolute sheer class from an era when the U.S. in particular, produced some legendary music....and that's coming from a 100% Englishman!

  • @EssexBoy696969 I agree with you 100%. Absolutely stunning.

  • merci beaucoup xxx

  • Muchas gracias for this, twisterdude...!

  • Oh, I just LOOOOOOVE this song.

  • I do 2 ^_^

  • @indigoeast4444 from 5:00 the drummer is killing it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song is one of my favorites, Steely Dan ROCKS!!

  • Always has been an amazing song. One of the best guitar solos ever recorded. Some of the best guitar period. Of course the record executives made sure the solo was cut off in order to keep thye song under 6 minutes imagine if they had allowed these guys to jam with no limits. Amazing. I hate record execs and producers for cutting out so much good music because of time limits.

  • Why was that decision taken? Because of radio air time and the concern it would not have been played?

If so it's a great shame. Queen's 8 minute Bhoemian Rhapsody is nothing unless it's played from start to finish.....this song mirrors it.

  • That's it, EssexBoy, I think 6 minutes was the cut-off point in those days. Bohemian Rhapsody is 5:59 minutes long, probably for the same reason. I agree with your description of this one as "absolute sheer class" as well, this record is now 33 years old and I've never got tired of it.

  • I concur about the time restraints put on songs, and the number of songs per album. Some great cuts have not been included for the same inane reason(s).
