If you think you have to "be part of the culture" to be straight edge, which I totally agree with, then why WOULDN'T you walk up to someone and speak to them just because you know they are also edge?
Part of the beauty if straight edge is that it is not only a belief system but also a community, or it should be anyway.
Part of the reason straight edge kicked-off in the 80s was because of sober kids that got sick of being the minority at punk rock shows, and it was comoforting to know that you weren't alone when you saw someone else proudly repping the Xs.
