dr who is a british show. america stay the fuck out of it.. lol ul be taking over eastenders next, just leave the show be, its british and sud stay british. the doctor sud hav the english accent it sounds smart, with the american accent it wil be silly tbh
I see your point though. I dont want it being americanized, like most japanese films when they get remade. It just steers the vision away from it. And makes you resent it. I truley hope they dont americanize it to the extent where it isnt Doctor Who anymore.
Well, the new Superman is being played by a British actor. And the same with the new Spider-Man aswell (half british/half american). As long as its good, and doesnt stray away too far from the original material, I couldnt care less who plays The Doctor :3
so true, its like changing the doctors profile, cause he is meant to be british not american. If the bbc did that to one of the american shows everyone would go in a rage. And america always changes our shows and american-ises them, so if america changes doctor who to be an american one! it wouldnt be fair because it is an british family show it would NOT be the same. And america ^(like the guy said)^ always wants to make our stuff "bigger" and "better" and they just come out wrong and rubbish!
As an american, I have no shame in saying that I think that if they completely Americanized the movie, it will be a disaster. Personally, I think the whole look of this season with Matt Smith and Steven Moffat has a look that Americans will like (and the ones who have already seen it mostly agree). If they keep the feel of how seasons 5 and 6 were in the movie, I think we just might make it.
Almost none of the American superheroes on film have ever been played by an American actor. I don't really think anybody minds too terribly about that, but more about the quality and style changing.
as for the americans doing Doctor Who I think that if they got someone like johnny depp like you had said then yes I think he could do the doctor justice, but if it someone else then they are walking on egg shells. I also like the idea of having eccleson as the doctor again in fact the first time I saw doctor who was on the CBC when they aired the series wth him. sorry for the spamming but the comments hold only so may characters
I had a discussion with a freind while watching Doc Martin and I said the writting between american shows and british
is that the people are more beliveble and and not trying to be funny while with american shows they are always trying to get a cheap shot in somewheres at the expense of stereotyping not all shows from the states are bad tho I do have some I like.
@redratcrawford I could tell by your comment. After the First Doctor (When the tried being educational with stories about Romans and other history) the show was always camp and on the naughty side. In fact I wonder how they got away with certain imagery. For a while Hitchhiker's Guide writer Douglas Adams was head writer and he used some of the old Hitchhiker scripts for the Doctor and Vice Versa. You can view the old show on BBC Classic Doctor Who You Tube Channel.
yah, i have to agree bigger is not always better look at some of the huge movies that had alot of money dumped in to it and they bombed and then look at the smaller budgets they go and do vey well, I watched a lot of british shows and american shows and there is alot of differences in the writting between the two,
I am American, and I can say, without a doubt, Americans would ruin Doctor Who as a show (as we have done with timeless miscellaneous things...) as done with the movie.
sure they made a dr who movie before, back in the 90's and it was set in the usa but it went ok and the dr in the movie went down as one of the official regenerations of the doctor, where as if they make another movie in the usa it might end up like that peter cushin garbage from back in the 60's, nothing to do with the whole storyline at all
@Bobsyermomsuncle all i know is there is a bible when it comes to making things dr who, you just cant go and throw in some new doctor just for one movie unless he gains a place in the dr who family tree sure it was done with the movie back in 97 but like i said, he gained himself a spot in the dr who family tree and im sorry but i dont want my doctor to suddenly gain an american accent
@punji73 There is canon when it comes to Star Trek, but I've been watching Doctor Who since the 1960's when the Doctor was an irritable Grandpa. And they can choose any new actor to play any of the Eleven Doctors-- I was watching Rhys Ifans, who is fast becoming my choice if they decide to make the movie about the Eight Doctor and the Time War.
@Bobsyermomsuncle I agree. This will be a Hollywood movie, not necessarily an American movie. The term 'Hollywood' generally means big and international, whereas 'British' movie means small and/or art house. The Doctor Who movie will NOT be restricted to British cinemas, but neither will it be Americanised. 'Star Wars' was a 'Hollywood' movie, even though a lot of it was made in Britain with British actors, etc. Same with James Bond. Johnny Depp would make a great Doctor.
@outofthegreenmist I have to be honest; I love Johnny and think he can do anything and make it watchable. I like Burton sometimes, but I rather it was --and from everything I've heard it IS-- Briton David Yates making the movie three or so years down the line for BBC Worldwide. I don't understand how an announcement and interview with Briton David Yates stirred up all of this American controversy.
@Bobsyermomsuncle To me, there is NO controversy at all. TV and cinema are NOT the same thing. That is why the 60's Dr Who movies gave the concept a different twist. The novels of the 90's did the same - they reformatted DW for a reading audience. A cinema audience wants a thrills-and-spills adventure story not continuity about the Time War and the 8th Doctor, blah-boring-fandom-crap-blah (yawn). Bring it on, I say. Depp for the Doc!
@punji73 I disagree. There never was a 'series Bible' with Dr Who. That is the root of its success - its ability to change, like the lead character himself, to regenerate and renew itself. Not all change is good but the ability to change IS good. Series locked into a 'bible' of do's and don't's DON'T last 50 years. BTW, the TV movie was 1996. Who says an American Doctor will have an American accent, anyway? Johnny Depp wouldn't.
@Bobsyermomsuncle and if youve been watching the show since 1960 then you wouldve needed a TARDIS to travel to the future to grab a tape of it cos the show started up in '63 lol
LEAVE DOCTOR WHO ALONE!!! it is a UK show and the yanks have only just started watching it now that it has become a trendy cool new thing to watch, i am not a pom i am aussie but have watched doctor who for many years and if the yanks make this movie it will destroy the whole series!
@punji73 We Yanks have been watching the show since the 1960. The Show is English-- the Doctor isn't. It doesn't matter who the Doctor regenerates into, and since when did David Yates--who says he's doing the film in three or so years, become American?
As for Doctor Who I think it should be left in british hands, it's a big part of british tv culture and the americans shouldn't take this from us. I think Moffat is doing a pretty good job at the moment although the second half of season 6 seemed a bit too over the top and very cheesy.
I don't don't want to see an Americanized Doctor, and I live in the US. I feel he should keep the British flare that saw from Tom Baker on. Then picked up the earlier Doctors later on.Look what Uwe Boll did to Bloodrayne.
@TheBlindDyslexic I totally agree. Why do we Americans think we can do everything better, and end up mucking it up? Instead of copying everyone else, I wish someone would have the balls to create something unique enough to compete with what Britain has to offer. Last time that happened was when George Lucas did Star Wars I think. Or when Roddenberry did Star Trek. After that, thought-provoking sci-fi was ditched for idiotic who's sleeping with who drama.
@sixstanger00 now its just the same as that with Moffat he is doing whos baby is who drama and Rory and Amy Show. Although with Depp as The Doctor I think it would not be too bad
The answer. No. Absolutely not. I'm from America, I love Doctor Who, and I say, no. America should not take it on. Our Country would f*(# it up. Have you seen our version of Top Gear? It sucks. Our version of Being Human? Equally sucks balls. Our media and BS corporate companies would muck it up beyond recognition. The TARDIS would become a Fried Dough stand that transforms into a Paris Hilton duck-o-tron. Broadcast it over here, but keep it based in England on the BBC, please.
i totally agree with you, although i was presently surprised by the latest torchood however i say leave our doctor alone hes british he is ours and america had there chance with paul mcann and that was it over for many years they did the concept no favours back then did they
I really wouldn't mind if the Doctor was British or American, as long as the actor was perfect, BUT what I won't agree is that America should direct a film etc. The director should be an already well-known person from the crew of the British TV series, like Russel T Davies. THEN it would be amazing xD
I wouldn't mind if the Doctor was British or American. But a movie should not be made in American hands. I think Americans pretty much screwed up on the 1996 version. They said that he was half human. (stupid idea) I'm American but I just don't think American should even think about making a movie or have an American Doctor.
Of course, as Doctor Who is a brand name that can be purchased, Burton certain can do a film version with Depp or any other actor, but the official go from BBC Universal or whaterver the BBC's international company is called went to David Yates. And we have to put up with an English guy as Spider Man. Spider man, unlike the Doctor IS an American. The Doctor isn't English, he's Gallefreyan. Although I do understand why one would want to keep the production British.

hey mate
i think when the doctor crosses the pond i think they will take out of the camp and geekness and heart out of the show.
keep it as it meant a bbc show with the heart and flavor with respect of the past.
maybe find someone like the great tom baker and thats a bit cheeky
cheers
