Genius! From the beginning straight through to the final encore. And if Mr. Richter wished to play the last movement again as the encore, I will not complain. "If music be the food of love, play on"!!!

Es ist sicher kein Zufall, dass Richters Spätwerk sich intensiv und fast ausschließlich Schuberts Sonaten annahm. Denn was wurde aus diesen Sonaten vorher gemacht! Wie wurden sie entstellt und das Große in ihnen bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verniedlicht, verharmlost sozusagen.

Schubert wird vielleicht am meisten misshandelt. So wie er an manchen Konservatorien gespielt wird, erinnert er an gichtgeplagte Studienräte, die auf Kaffeekränzchen zu alter Damen Gewäsch auf einem verstimmten Harmonium Kirchenlieder aborgeln.

Und doch gehört er zum Programm. Er passt in den Salat und bei ihm kann man dann doch so richtig mogeln.

Es gibt viele gute Beethoveninterpreten, aber nur wenige spielen Schubert, wie es seiner würdig wäre. Die meisten fassen Beethoven als Hans und Schubert als Hänschen auf. Wenn man Richter Schubert hat spielen hören, vergisst man das alles und man wird den Eindruck nicht mehr los, dass eigentlich niemand außer Richter Schubert spielen kann.

Ja, es war tatsächlich das Bedürfnis da, den letzten Satz zu wiederholen. Es ist ihm gelungen, mit dieser Wiederholung, irgendwie den gesamten Bogen noch mehr zu erfüllen, als mit den vorgeschriebenen 4 Sätzen.. :-o

Man geht raus aus dem Saal jetzt mit einem erhöhten Lebens- und Erlebensgefühl!

It could also have been that he was not entirely happy with the first time and wanted to improve it. He did in fact many times play the last movement again as encore, sometimes he didn´t give encores at all. At Carnegie Hall in 1960 he gave 8 or something, the audience wouldn´t let him go!

Hmmm that's interesting, I didn't know that about Richter. I would get bored with hearing the same piece played again as an encore, but that's not the case with Richter haha.

I think it was not the case with his listeners either! I had the opportunity to attend two of his concerts myself, and it was shear magic from beginning to end. He was also angry with pianists who didn´t play all the repeats indicated in the score, he said "- don´t they like the music they are playing?" A good question indeed!

in fact I noticed something sounded even better in the encore. Besides that just look at the polite smile in Richter's face when he is bowing to the audience. Of course you can be happy when you can play like he did
