That is why he is Mr. Awesome...Astaire. Dynamic at the age he was & can do such dance numbers & not get pooped. I was lucky once to have the ability to be in talent show for my Local College. They actually wanted someone to do a dance sequence. I knew walking into the audition that I was going to do a tribute to Mr. Astaire. Yes I received the part. Let me tell you dancing isn't easy even though it looks so effortlessly done by Fred the reason is he rehearsed all the time. He was in shape.
That,s why Astaire admired Jackson and the other way around, they were both perfectionist, both on stage at the age of 5, Michael had a career of 45 years from 50 years Astaire a career of 76 years when he died at the age of 84 in 1987, the year Micheal made the video for Smooth Crim
With this experiment he simply wanted to prove how hard it is, how much energy to dance and sing at the same time. So it,s even harder for the speed at a 2 hours concert for Madonna or Michael Jackson, and I say this as a major Astaire fan, because he understood, he repected every dancer because he knew how hard work it was to do it good, let along sing with it .
I agree with you all...Fred is a timeless master! In fact, I read that the great composers of his time, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, when people asked them who they would most like to sing their songs, they all said Fred, because he may not have had the greatest voice in terms of power, etc., but his musicality, his sense of phrasing, and expression, made him, in their opinion, the best person to interpret their songs! He's amazing.
I agree with all of you. He was a still agile 59 when this was made. Fred was called a musician who danced. It's true because his musicality informed his dancing...and perhaps visa-versa. I also felt that Ginger Rogers was an actress who danced...the strength of her plot-driven expressiveness, being the key to her over-the-top success with Fred.
seeing this - i can see why fred and judy garland got on so well in easter parade - their self-deprication is very similar :D what a guy! i've never seen anything like his talent before or since (and don't say gene kelly because you cannot compare the two - fred is more graceful and elegant whereas gene is athletic)
What a happy convergence of talents, from dance to song, to the composers who he attracted...and the blessing that was Ginger Rogers. Put all of this together and one can understand why in 1959...23 years after "Top Hat" audiences could still thrill to this master....as generations more will for as long as humanity is interested in filmed dance and music.
So, where on earth can you find his three TV specials? I would love to see them. I own all of his movie musicals, but I can't find the TV specials. Where are they?
