  • Couple weeks ago one of our speakers got sick and was a no show. We finally got to sing all 7 verses to fill up time. Time well spent, if you ask me. I'm with JS on this one. My favorite hymn.

  • This song is very sad, but it cheers up in the end. At the end it is my favorite part: "Then in a moment to my view, the stranger started from disguise. The tokens in his hands I knew, the Savior stood before my eyes. He spake, and my poor name he named, "Of me thou hast not been ashamed. These deeds shall thy memorial be; Fear not, thou didst them unto me."

  • I agree...this is my favourite song as well.

  • I also noticed something else. It not only reminds me of the "Good Samaritan" (I spelled that wrong), but if you think about it, it also sounds like Jesus. Think about it and you will see my point of view.

  • @trumpetboy262 I think it was written about jesus.

  • I can see why it's Joseph Smith's favorite song; the lyrics, the music itself amazing. However if you look at the words carefully, the song is actually pretty sad, it does however cheer up later.

  • This is beautiful, but they skip 3 verses. Does anyone know of a good rendition in which they don't?

  • This video has no dislikes? I seriously have never seen that on YouTube.

  • I had never heard this song ever till a friend of mine shared his testimony and mentioned this song. Now I Can't stop listening to it. So grateful to have The Church in my life and so grateful for the wonderful people in it.

  • Ok but Jesus is before the church.

  • @dorisfenella what gave you the impression that its any other way? Our church is named The Church of Jesus Christ. Its all about Christ. My aunt always tells me that we worship Joseph Smith, and not Christ, and that we dont really give ourselves to Christ...yet, in the church by my house, I went to count the paintings one day. I found 34 of Christ, and only one small portrait of Joseph Smith. That day in church, we talked about how to become more christlike. Smith wasnt even mentioned.

  • @dorisfenella people are just talking lots about Smith on this page because this happened to be his favorite hymn. Not because he is more important than Christ. Indeed, no person who ever lived could come close to the importance that Christ's life has for each of us.

  • im not mormon, but this song is amazing.

  • @levicall our choir is world renowned

  • Inspiring words to help us serve as the savior served others.

  • My favorite!

  • Its my favorite too.. So he and I have something else in common.. how cool!

  • the two men shown above goes to show that these brothers are so inseparable, IN LIFE THEY WERE NOT DIVIDED, IN DEATH THEY WERE NOT SEPARATED!! this is wot u call brotherly love. An older brother who stood by his younger brother even in the days of suffering and trouble and even when things went wrong. No matter how tough it was and struggles there were he was still there until they both were martyred

  • Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

"Yet there was something in his eye That won my love; I knew not why... The stranger started from disguise.

The tokens in his hands I knew; The Savior stood before mine eyes."

I am so grateful for the Savior and His sacrifice for me.

  • Sehr gut.... I love singing this song in german. Despite what people may say, the german language is a very beautiful language. Even more so with hymns. Ich liebe die Kirche... Und Jesus Christus auch. Ich weiß, daß der Herr lebt. Ich weiß auch, daß das Buch Mormon das Wort Gottes ist. Jesus Christus ist mein Erlöser und Retter. I love this church... And Jesus Christ also.

  • I'm singing this with my choir :) we each get a solo and i love singing it. I also love singing The Spirit of God and Abide with Me; Tis' Eventide in Japanese and Spanish

  • @iKitKatSensei They are both awesome to sing in German too.

  • @abbott2able Oh i bet! (^_^) I love foreign languages, especially for hymns!

  • @AnointedShield the content is definitly NOT arguable. Go read the poem, with no music background. You will cry harder than listening. Once youve read the lyrics all the way through, listening to it becomes even more spiritual.

  • most cathartic song ever!

  • Beautiful Song, AND no dislikes. I really hope it stays that way. It deserves it. Joseph Smith was right, and not just about the church. This song is amazing.

  • @XXwaterpolo post the same thing once. Not three times please.

  • I think its funny that this. The most beautiful of all hymns. Which was actually written by a member of the Church of England and put to music by a Protestant Minister is now only in use by the Mormon Church. How have other churches let this out of their grasp?

  • Joseph Smith's favorite song, but lets not forget why. This song is about one and only one, the Savior, Jesus the Christ. Thats why Joseph loved it, and thats why it has meaning even today. Joseph was a great man, but Jesus was a God, and one that loved you and I more than anything else the universe had ever seen.

  • @MagicMormonUnderwear who cares if hes not a real mormon? God Bless him. Hes still a child of God. If he breaks the law hell go to jail, his problem. Besides, could you be more offensive? I happen to have aspergers and am very sad that a person could devote so much of their ltime to being disrespectful to other people. I bet you are gay and hate it when people discriminate against and ridicule you. Yet you have no compassion for others. We must be tolerant of you but you will not tolerate us?

  • This is by far my favorite hymn as well. I have been fortunate to have witnessed the Tabernacle perform it live, and my family visited the Carthage Jail when we attended the open house of the Nauvoo Temple in 2002. Those were happy days. Now, my daughters, ages 14 and 16 are rebelling against us. My 14 year has left the church. My 16 year old I discovered last night developed a friendship with a 21 year online and he is her "fiance." Where did I go wrong? I am sitting here, feeling like death.

  • @maineanthony We must taste the bitter to know the sweet. Your daughters are the daughters of the father. Consider how you feel, now think how the heavenly father must feel. Christ is our advocate with the father, give your life to him and you will find peace. Jesus is the master comforter. "When things that are dear to you are withdrawn from you, know that this is your lesson to be learned right now, but know also that you are learning this lesson so that god can give you something better."

  • This has always been my favorite song and I think that it is interesting how this was the Prophet Joseph Smiths favorite song too becuase I am related to him! I aspecially love to play this song on the violin! The next time you listen to this, I ask you to close your eyes and fell the love and comfort that this song brings to you The hairs on my arms stick up every time I listen to it! I am so thankful that he did all of the things that he did for us. I truley do love him and the Book of Mormon!

  • Brought tears to my eyes. Not even kidding. This is my favorite hymn.

  • I sing this song almost everyday, and every day when i sing the last verse. a tear comes to my eye.

  • This is among my favorite hymns and this arrangement is perfect. I believe this was also President Benson's favorite hymn and was sung at his funeral. When I listen to this arrangement and close my eyes it brings a tear to my eye thinking about the end of Joseph Smith's life. He truely was a prophet of God and this Church is true, and I am thankful to be a part of it.

  • Doesn't anyone find it funny that Joesph Smith, the man who helped restore the church to man was imprisoned in a place called "liberty" jail.

"Joseph Smith did more for the church, save Jesus Christ, than any other man throughout history." -John Taylor

that quote may not me word for word since I did it from memory, but Joseph Smith was a true prophet of god and I am glad he did what he did so we can have this church and the book of mormon to guide us.

  • I think its funny that a jail would even be named that

  • @Zaelek1776 Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has doe more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. (See D&C 135:3)

Good memory though Zaelek1776, and the 76 at the end of my name stands for 1776 as well!

  • my favorite hymn in the lds hymn book, such a good song about our relationship with christ.

  • My favorite song!

  • I can see why this was the Prophet Joseph Smith's favorite song.

  • @omiolo2 Yeah, it is definitely one of the best in the hymnal. Even an atheist could take something away from this hymn.

  • @IWannabeJew I believe the song is a derivation of the Good Samaritan which is a derivation of a Jewish story.
