Here you have this magazine sitting on public streets, in Barnes and Noble, etc, etc. People see it, glance at it, get the mental image but probably never read the article inside.
That might actually be a bit funny, but it wouldn't really send any sort of message, because McCain's age has only been an issue of light humour, whereas the media has been making a big deal about the possibility of Obama being muslim, as if his being one would somehow invalidate his run. It is a smear campaign, and the New Yorker article is commentary on that attitude of smearingness.

That might actually be a bit funny, but it wouldn't really send any sort of message, because McCain's age has only been an issue of light humour, whereas the media has been making a big deal about the possibility of Obama being muslim, as if his being one would somehow invalidate his run. It is a smear campaign, and the New Yorker article is commentary on that attitude of smearingness.
I don't really understand why whether or not people would read the articles is relevant.

Depends. Many people have a real issue with McCain's age. I feel it's as much an issue for some as Obama's Muslim or terrorist notions.
I also feel that people not reading the article is entirely the point here. Because, although the cover is meant (hopefully) to be satire, your mind doesn't process it as satire unless you know where the editor is coming from.
Hell 50% of the people in this country don't have mind enough to vote intelligently. Do you think they know what rags are red and blue?

The New Yorker cover was intended to be bogus, to show up all of the misperceptions that Fox and other media are feeding people. I think that it went over the top, though. I like your smear tactics the best.

I think people missed the point of the cartoon. The cover image is supposed to be what the idiots in white middle America think about Obama. If I were the cartoonist I would have drawn two average white Americans at the bottom and the cover image would have been in their thought ballon. The real scam on this is that now we are talking about a cartoon and not any real issues. The media played the magic trick and we all fell for it.(Again)

Tell Obama that about the cartoon, It was not good. I used to read the New Yorker Magazine. That's a seed planted into people's minds by the media, if they were for him they would not have done that. So you talk about because the media was pressing it. Some would never read the article inside.

No I agree with you that the cartoon did not make the point it was trying to make. Since I'm a cartoonist, I recognize that if you have to explain yourself than you didn't convey your message correctly. I would have drawn the cartoon differently so it would be pretty obvious what I was trying to say. But I still stick by my other comment on the media. This entire election cycle has been focused on the most idiotic topics. It's their fault people think Obama is a muslim to begin with.

You didn't listen to the video, I said it really wasn't sunscreen it was lotion. Still I do use sunscreen, yes I do have melanin in my skin to protect it, but because of new rays burning rays from the sun we all need sunscreen.

There is such a thing as organic sunscreen, I do know other factors cause skincancer, I am a licensed skincare therapist. But the sun does do damage, and that's a very real fact.

You know who you remind me of? Bill Donahue of the Catholic League upset over South Park when they did the Cartoon Wars episode. The guys at South Park wanted to show Mohammed just standing there looking normal and Comedy Central censored them, but they didn't censor Jesus shitting on the American flag and the president. They showed the hypocrisy of our culture and how terrorism was working by censoring Mohammed but the message went over Bill Donahue's stupid head.

I think that what most people were upset over was the fact that the drawing validates the archetype it represents to those who actually believe it. I mean let's face it. (continued) Don't get me wrong. I do enjoy the occasional satirical characterization in my Sunday paper and I also love to watch South Park, but this particular drawing was pretty damn tasteless. A better satire would have been to draw a potbellied YouTuber, wearing a wifebeater, with empty beer cans strown about, while fervently pecking away at his keyboard, posting these absurd rumors and angry bigoted comments about the Obamas. Now THAT would have been funny!
