The war has been going on for a long time. Whose better? Well It all depends on your opinion. If You like Roth well hey great. If you like Hagar,Thats awesome too. If you like both well you are well diverse. I think this will be going on for a long time to come. I like both camps but most of all its about the music. And Personally I think Van Halen is missing the main Ingredient! Of course I am talking about Michael Anthony. Wolfgang has a lot to learn.
Van Hagar simply because I remember Van Hagar I was too young to remember Van Roth excepting a fuzzy memory of Jump that was likely a few years after its release.
Sammy is a better singer though. Cant compare the two because it's different bands with each of them.
I will say this, I've never seen Van Halen but I've seen both Sammy and David multiple times and what kills a David Lee Roth show is the fact that he's so full of himself that he ruins a good song so that he can pose or shake his ass at the crowd.
Sammy is all about the fans having a good time and hearing good music. Dave is about Dave.
Let me sum this up: Running With the Devil, You Really Got Me, AIN'T TALKIN BOUT LOVE, D.O.A., Romeo Delight, Loss of Control, MEAN STREET, UNCHAINED, Hang Em High, Secrets, PANAMA, DROP DEAD LEGS, HOT FOR TEACHER. Of course the Roth-era was better, the Hagar period was a tamed, watered down, ballad-heavy VERSION of the original. "Dreams" doesn't even deserve to be here, that song is shit, and so is 5150
Obviously the David Lee Roth years had better riffs. The majority of rock bands are better when younger. In their 20's and early 30's. But Van Halen is one of my favorite bands as a whole. Eddie did awsome riffs with Sammy Hagar aswell. Either way, watching this video makes me want to travel back to the early or mid 80's, hook up with a few friends, a cute girl and watch a Van Halen concert! Damn, I'd pay good money for that !
Heres my take on this arguement. I love both DLR and Sammy. To me the songs with DLR were more fun rock 'n' roll songs. They are just plain fun to listen to and play. Sammys songs were a little more toned down. Less shredding guitar from Eddie and more keyboard work. Sammy is a better singer, but DLR is a better frontman. I say Roth wins :)

The Red Rocker is still going, and now that David Lee Putz has rejoined Eddie and Alex, and Michael has been replaced by Wolfgang, well, the Red Rocker will still be flying where Eagles Fly, and Eddie and Alex will go by the wayside. Its sad really. Like Neil Young sang, "...its better to burn out than fade away", and now Eddie and Alex will simply fade away. Its sad really. RIP.
This is a no brainer here folks! Also, Roth VH still sounds great & holds up much better today than the Van Hagar material. Fair Warning just shits all over anything w Sammy on it!
Van Roth = Hard, rocking songs with weird clothing, hardass drums, aggressive yet simple bass, violent riffs and solos and slutty, sexed up vocals that asked for a party
Van Hagar= Versatility, not always as hard as Van Roth but still able to go there, some of the best backing vocals ever, more blues and pop influences, without changing the genre, and finally a singer/frontman, not just a superfrontman/sometimes good vocalist
I grew up around Van Halen because my dad listened to it all the time but Hagar is way better in my opinion, Dave just likes to scream and act like a fag.
Too bad you grew up during bland, pop, love ballad era of Van Halen kid. The only REAL VH is Roth Halen. Not even the best of Van Hagar beats Roth Halen in it's prime. Just look up Van Halen Unchained 81 on YT or spin some Fair Warning for further proof!

Not just cus of Diamond Dave but because EvH's guitar playing was at it's peak during this time.

I could puke on Hagar the Horrible; though it's been 5,000 years, Dave's version of VH has the swagger, tempo and chops that make for a true balls-out stadium band.
just looking at this reminds me of how many great songs VAN HALEN did. It's a shame these days they are mostly known for their "silly clothing" and the Roth vs. Hagar debate. VAN HALEN did among the best rock ever written.. I hope more "kids" see this video and realize that !
Anyone ever notice that those who hate the VH era with Hagar are always calling people homo's and fags?...psychologists will tell you that people who are always calling others fags etc have a secret hangup themselves. Anyways, VH rocked with both Sammy and Dave, they just were slightly different. The tours with Sammy had awesome sound and always keep in mind Eddie wrote the riffs and not assless pant wearer Roth.
Yeah, Van Roth has the way better riffs pretty much, but Eddies solos are equally as great with both singers and the singing in Hagar Halen was so much better its not even funny. Roth was never a great singer.
pretty simple if you like hagar ur into pop music and u should prolly come clean to ur parents that ur gay,,,if you like roth ur into riffs that fuckin punch ya in the mouth and take ya out for shots of jack until ur pissin blood,,no question roth era kicks hagar eras ass.
Anyone who thinks Van Hagar is better overall is a automatic flaming homosexual. Saying Van Hagar is better than Van Halen is just as bad as saying you raped a kitten and then filetted it.
Van Roth had more of those fast paced cocaine/liquor binge riffs, while Van Hagar had those chill corona on the beach riffs, but Hagar did add his Montrose riffs at times, which were heavy, but slower.
The riffs done whilst with Sammy aren't even half as powerful or as catchy as the ones done with Roth. I know it has nothing to do with the singer but Eddie did his best ones with Roth.
Hagar vs Roth? Sounds like EVH vs EVH. People seem to forget Ed had some of these riffs before Van Halen was even formed. I doubt either singer had much to do with the basic riffs of these tunes.
hey all you van hagar gay pop fucks, without diamond dave, there would be no van hagar! Dave has more talent and has a better stage presence, and is overall more talented.
Cubic zirconia sucks,he is so Vegas, Hagar rocks,The band had more of a driving force with Sammy... Eddie is always awesome (Wow Ed on the paino) You can even tell Eddie had more fun with Van Hagar...
Of course people are going to mostly pick the original that's normal. I prefer Van Hagar just because I prefer Hagar as a overall artist compared to Roth because Roth needed Eddie more than Sammy needed Eddie lets be honest. Just look at Sammy's solo career compared to David's.
@LiveAction77 no way, 2:00, 3:24, 4:15, 4:28, 5:26, 5:44, 6:41 make Van Hagar win automatically. Actually the video leaves out all the heavier Hagar riffs, which isn't fair.
@VHDT10 then how come sammy hagar plays david lee roths songs including running with the devil panama jump aint talking bout love so yeah even sammy thinks roth is better than him any true van halen fan would say Roth is the sound of van halen
@LiveAction77 I'll explain, Sammy isn't a stuck up asshole and didn't want to disappoint the fans who liked those songs. Will you just go through the songs? Sammy has way more meaning. David is really gay and sounds like he's singing show tunes all the time, no feeling besides 'hey, can't wait to bang all the girls after the show and act like I'm better than everyone' <- sorry but VH with Hagar has done a lot for me growing up and Roth just makes us laugh, I know a lot of people who like Sam.
@VHDT10 Dont get me wrong i love sammy hagar too and im sure hes a great guy and all but all i like to say to people who perfer sammy over roth is that i just want to agree that roth is the sound of van halen as well as EVH obviously and everybody else.
As I have stated everyone has differences in music taste and if you like Hagar VH well you enjoy soft rock of DLR with VH you love hard flambouyant rock me I can only accept DLR with VH it was pure mean sex driven, rough, dirty, clean guitar works, rock. Not haed bangging stuff but brillant rock that made you rock, dance, fuck as many women as you can and enjoy life that was DLR and VH not Hagar with him sex with a women was lets not fuck too hard LOL who fucks like that
Ed playing cheesy love songs with hagar doesn't look or sound right. This is the guy who came up with running with the devil, aint talkin bout love, youre no good, somebody get me a doctor, bottoms up, the list goes on and on. thats what van halen should be about, pure energy and rock n roll
You cant even compare. Van Roth by far. Eddies stuff with roth was so much more excitingg. His stuff with Sammy wass really like...i guess you could say like not exciting at all.
First off Van Halen are one of the best /underrated live bands period, regardles of who's lead singing for them. Seen them a few times live and they were flawless
Have to agree on the singing front, both Roth and Hagar served there purpose, but Van Halen was a band not a lead singer with backup instruments, i saw them when they had neither lead singing for them and it still sounded just as good
The real reason you stated that is due to Eddie but think of this if Hagar was with them VH at the start would they really got as big as they did with soft rock. Hagar may be great singer and Roth yes good but not great but it is the way that each individual has a connection with both writer (DLR) and musican (EVH) they worked in well just like John Lennon and Paul Mc also Mick Jagger and Keith Richards but Hagar and EVH never did a few hits, same why Roth never made it solo do you understand
I wasn't into vanhalen, just some songs and eddies hair and guitar playing caught my attention~~~When Sammy joined that is when I was all about vanhalen~~~I will always choose Sammy, Love,Love,Love SAmmy.
There both great and fantastic in their own right/way.
The reason you liked Sammy over DLR is you like that type music, but true VH fans know that VH music is what DLR and EVH produced true hard rock entertainment. But we all have different tasts in music if not be a stale lot of music in the world
Overall I think Van Halen's material has been really good. Some songs could have been better and offcourse there is filler. But over the years they've done alot of great music !
they are talking guitar here guys not the singers,,, fuck sammy riffs era are so thin and full of chorus... not the brown sound like with roth.. anybody knows wht im talking about?
Both are great singers, Roth has much larger vocal range over but as overall voice, I prefer Sammy's voice. Both of them were great, but I still prefer DLR, he was a big part of VH. :D
I think the main difference between the eras is not the singing (both have amazing voices) but the DLR era riffs were more hardcore, as well as the lyrics, and Hagar era was more ballads and more about the lyrics with softer, but still awesome riffing. Both amazing.
lol the difference between to don't tell me what love can do and runnin with the devil made me laff, eddie played one note, and then a huge riff, i think the difference is obvious lol
I don't know what the fuck it is with people out there who who say "Dave was better" or "Sammy was better". BOTH SINGERS DEFINED VAN HALEN! Get that through your skulls people. Gary Cherone is a great singer but most of us can agree that he was not suited for Van Halen. Bottom line........Van Halen grew as a band because they had two phenomenal singers at different times who BOTH helped define the essence of the band.
hey both were great dave had the hard rock side which never got VH a no.1 hit albumbut was awesome. now sammy turned them to pop eddie liked pop but kept the VH feel in it so it didnt sound like when yes went to pop so both are bad and great in their OWN WAY. dave songs u cud have sex to party to and dance to sammy had the soft pop side that most ppl cud relate to so thats why van hagar did so well 5 no.1 albums 0 roth but i gotta say 1984 shudve been a no.1 but it kinda only got that was cuz
Van Halen vs. Van Hagar. Van Halen is with Roth and it's actually HARD ROCK & ROLL music. With Hagar it was baiscially more "girly ballad" POP MUSIC GARBAGE!
1:35 would be Secrets from the Diver Down Cd...And 1:44 would be Don't Tell Me from the Balance cd...2 of the better tunes from each version of VH...You have good taste in tunage dude ;)
sammy was more useful 2 the group. he had hits on his own & was famous b4 van halen. he could also play guitar 2 give eddie more room 2 play keyboards. Roth was good, but Hagar is alot better. Plus 5150 is my favorite Van Halen album & Van Halen 1 comes 2nd.
Ya know, I love Eddie and his work.! I LOVE Sammy Hagar as much as i LOVE Dave! I became a Van Halen fan back in 81 and i"ve never listened to anything else since then. Dave left and Sammy took over. Sammy took the band to the top of the charts so why dont you give the guy a break!!!!!!What the hell is wrong with you people????? We dont get that kind of bands up here in cold Norway so please dont be so hard.
I'm not a Sammy hater. I do prefer the Dave years, but Sammy does get a bad break sometimes. So glad that dave's back with them tho, saw them on that tour, amazing. I am digging Chickenfoot tho.
They are both great, but in my opinion Sammy is the better lead man. He gave Van Halen more variety. Dave's era was great, but it all sounds the same after awhile. Thats my opinion on it. Don't get mad about it.
Sammy Hagar made the band more of a slow ballad sounding band. Eddie played more keyboard than guitar with him. When it was with David Lee they made more faster and uptempo music. which im my opinion is the better side of the band.
i don't really care who lead sings 4 van halen. they cud have geddy lee, james hetfield, gene simmons, freddy mercury, david lee roth OR sammy hagar. cuz it doesn't matter. van halen is just VAN HALEN. no matter who sings lead vocals. *_*
no offence but sammy changed that band completly, and not for the good. imagine what it it would be like if dave never left. they would without a doubt be the best around, they would be everyones favorite band. theyre mind but i hate van haggar, i think its pussy shit
Here's what we got from Van Roth Van Halen Van Halen II Women and Children First Fair Warning Diver Down 1984 Here's what we got from Van Hagar 5150 Live Without a Net OU812 For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Live: Right Here, Right Now Balance the winner? simple the answer is us because the more Van Halen the better & stop hating on Sammy he's a legend along with Diamond Dave who both are also great solo artists, also Van Halen are releasin a new album so lets look forward to that
whats the sonng at 1:27 its great. and van halen did some great MVs in the 90s and if you ask me eddie looks pretty good with a beard mustache combo in his late 30s
everybody 's arguing about who the better singer is but there is no van halen if theres no eddie and alex we should be lucky that we got to listen to some fantastic music over the yearsvan halen for ever thanx for the music guys it was a big part of my life growing up both eras of van halen
I remember when the split happened, and wasn't pleased, If you look at it, when Hagar joined the band, all of his fans we're now suddenly Van Halen fans, and they probably didn't own a single van Halen record in their life, before Sammy. Van Halen will always be:dave, Eddie, Michael, and Alex;No one else.
To me, here's the deal: This has NOTHING to do with Roth or Hagar, this is about Eddie. Eddie is among the most important guitarist in rock... changing rock guitar in a way only comparable to Hendrix.
Eddie is among the best guitarist to grace the planet... he is a VERY AVERAGE keyboard player... at BEST!!
When he used to write most of his music on guitar, it was godlike... just like his guitar playing. When he writes music on a keyboard, it's mediocre... just like his keyboard playing.
Sammy Hagar hands down. DLR is great in all aspects but Sammy was just better, just an opinion here people so don't jump on my ass.

pretty simple if you like hagar ur into pop music and u should prolly come clean to ur parents that ur gay,,,if you like roth ur into riffs that fuckin punch ya in the mouth and take ya out for shots of jack until ur pissin blood,,no question roth era kicks hagar eras ass.

Anyone who thinks Van Hagar is better overall is a automatic flaming homosexual. Saying Van Hagar is better than Van Halen is just as bad as saying you raped a kitten and then filetted it.
zildjiandrummr12 1 year ago

Van Roth FTW!! riffage.
Hagar is a better singer than Roth though, although I like them both.

LiveAction77 1 year ago
@LiveAction77 I'll explain, Sammy isn't a stuck up asshole and didn't want to disappoint the fans who liked those songs. Will you just go through the songs? Sammy has way more meaning. David is really gay and sounds like he's singing show tunes all the time, no feeling besides 'hey, can't wait to bang all the girls after the show and act like I'm better than everyone' <- sorry but VH with Hagar has done a lot for me growing up and Roth just makes us laugh, I know a lot of people who like Sam.
VHDT10 1 year ago
@VHDT10 Dont get me wrong i love sammy hagar too and im sure hes a great guy and all but all i like to say to people who perfer sammy over roth is that i just want to agree that roth is the sound of van halen as well as EVH obviously and everybody else.

I really like both, but there'd be no Van Halen without Roth. At least not the way we know it.
Sammy was at his best in Montrose imo.

As I have stated everyone has differences in music taste and if you like Hagar VH well you enjoy soft rock of DLR with VH you love hard flambouyant rock me I can only accept DLR with VH it was pure mean sex driven, rough, dirty, clean guitar works, rock. Not haed bangging stuff but brillant rock that made you rock, dance, fuck as many women as you can and enjoy life that was DLR and VH not Hagar with him sex with a women was lets not fuck too hard LOL who fucks like that
thecragenator1 2 years ago
I have to agree I never got into hagar VH so soft not taking away Eddies great guitar works but man Roth with Eddie just was killer rock
thecragenator1 2 years ago
No Van Halen without Roth.

Ed playing cheesy love songs with hagar doesn't look or sound right. This is the guy who came up with running with the devil, aint talkin bout love, youre no good, somebody get me a doctor, bottoms up, the list goes on and on. thats what van halen should be about, pure energy and rock n roll
ill3stV1llain 2 years ago
You cant even compare. Van Roth by far. Eddies stuff with roth was so much more excitingg. His stuff with Sammy wass really like...i guess you could say like not exciting at all.
ps3FANB0Y7 2 years ago 2
If it iwasn't for the rest Hagar and Loth would've been pretty boring.
Though saying that David-Lee-Roth did go onto have a moderately successful solo career.
Personally i lead slightly towards David Lee Roth in vocal ability and sound of the band at the time.
Spamazoid 2 years ago
First off Van Halen are one of the best /underrated live bands period, regardles of who's lead singing for them. Seen them a few times live and they were flawless
Have to agree on the singing front, both Roth and Hagar served there purpose, but Van Halen was a band not a lead singer with backup instruments, i saw them when they had neither lead singing for them and it still sounded just as good
Spamazoid 2 years ago
A true Van Halen fan doesn't choose one over another. They are both equally good.
DefLeppardVanHalen 2 years ago
The real reason you stated that is due to Eddie but think of this if Hagar was with them VH at the start would they really got as big as they did with soft rock. Hagar may be great singer and Roth yes good but not great but it is the way that each individual has a connection with both writer (DLR) and musican (EVH) they worked in well just like John Lennon and Paul Mc also Mick Jagger and Keith Richards but Hagar and EVH never did a few hits, same why Roth never made it solo do you understand
thecragenator1 2 years ago
Okayyy~~~
eddie played all those riffs...right???
I wasn't into vanhalen, just some songs and eddies hair and guitar playing caught my attention~~~When Sammy joined that is when I was all about vanhalen~~~I will always choose Sammy, Love,Love,Love SAmmy.
There both great and fantastic in their own right/way.
RubyLovesTomDonnelly 2 years ago
The reason you liked Sammy over DLR is you like that type music, but true VH fans know that VH music is what DLR and EVH produced true hard rock entertainment. But we all have different tasts in music if not be a stale lot of music in the world
thecragenator1 2 years ago
Van Hagar tried too hard to be something meaningful and moving.
Van Halen was a full throttle ass kicking party without having to try, which is something meaningful and moving all in itself.

they are talking guitar here guys not the singers,,, fuck sammy riffs era are so thin and full of chorus... not the brown sound like with roth.. anybody knows wht im talking about?
bethoveen3 2 years ago 3
Both are great singers, Roth has much larger vocal range over but as overall voice, I prefer Sammy's voice. Both of them were great, but I still prefer DLR, he was a big part of VH. :D
GoodGuitarSolos 2 years ago
Im not huge VH fanatic but DLR era songs were definantly more hard rockin stuff ... after he left it was weird shit
yeapno 2 years ago
I think the main difference between the eras is not the singing (both have amazing voices) but the DLR era riffs were more hardcore, as well as the lyrics, and Hagar era was more ballads and more about the lyrics with softer, but still awesome riffing. Both amazing.
housemandoc23 2 years ago 3
lol the difference between to don't tell me what love can do and runnin with the devil made me laff, eddie played one note, and then a huge riff, i think the difference is obvious lol
1kydde2 2 years ago
I don't know what the fuck it is with people out there who who say "Dave was better" or "Sammy was better". BOTH SINGERS DEFINED VAN HALEN! Get that through your skulls people. Gary Cherone is a great singer but most of us can agree that he was not suited for Van Halen. Bottom line........Van Halen grew as a band because they had two phenomenal singers at different times who BOTH helped define the essence of the band.

Van hagar was pure shit. Van halen is brilliant.

Sammy is has the better voice but didn't use it except for gay love songs, which kinda ruined Van Halen. Long live DLR!

Van Hagar is good, however Van Halen is true genius at work. Masterpieces that will stand the test of time.
Roth and Eddie are Gods in their respective fields.

Hagar is weak weak weak
DLR is the best
Brought the best out of Ed
Sammy turned VH into some gay pj wearing pop /ballad playing weak plastic popsicle color band.
And that is the truth anyone who diagrees has a Milli Vanilli album in thier collection I would have to assume.
radairman33 2 years ago 2
hey both were great dave had the hard rock side which never got VH a no.1 hit albumbut was awesome. now sammy turned them to pop eddie liked pop but kept the VH feel in it so it didnt sound like when yes went to pop so both are bad and great in their OWN WAY. dave songs u cud have sex to party to and dance to sammy had the soft pop side that most ppl cud relate to so thats why van hagar did so well 5 no.1 albums 0 roth but i gotta say 1984 shudve been a no.1 but it kinda only got that was cuz

Nice compilation! With every riff that came up, I thought: "cool, I like that one..." "Cool, I like that one too!"
I just flat-out love the music, regardless of the singer. Of course I like one singer much better than the other, but that's beside the point.

sammy was more useful 2 the group. he had hits on his own & was famous b4 van halen. he could also play guitar 2 give eddie more room 2 play keyboards.

In all honesty, is there really that big a difference ??
In some songs yes. But overall, I'd say both hagar and roth did their jobs very well.
The album "Best of Van Halen Volume 1" is incredible. And it has songs from both singer.
Yes, roth is better. But i'll take =VH= any way I can get it. And Hagar is the best replacement.
Period..

I remember when the split happened, and wasn't pleased, If you look at it, when Hagar joined the band, all of his fans we're now suddenly Van Halen fans, and they probably didn't own a single van Halen record in their life, before Sammy. Van Halen will always be:dave, Eddie, Michael, and Alex;No one else.
thefallofmaxpayne 2 years ago
To me, here's the deal: This has NOTHING to do with Roth or Hagar, this is about Eddie. Eddie is among the most important guitarist in rock... changing rock guitar in a way only comparable to Hendrix.
Eddie is among the best guitarist to grace the planet... he is a VERY AVERAGE keyboard player... at BEST!!
When he used to write most of his music on guitar, it was godlike... just like his guitar playing. When he writes music on a keyboard, it's mediocre... just like his keyboard playing.
