Hi Mark. If you ever see these messages, I still feel very strongly that you're efforts are such a perfect way for you to do honor to your father. Good job. Very, very good.
true charecters will always live on thru word of mouth my dad passed on his cheech collections mag to me and i shall pass it on to my son he's six not yet ready for bode but in six more this book and wizards movie is all his
Anyone who thinks they know what Vaughn would want right now doesn't know squat. Did it ever occur to you nay-sayers that merchandising is a means of preserving the characters and their stories? At the end of the day, if nobody sees the art, then the art is not remembered. I'd rather see the art live on.
True, I think that many of us are just tainted by Lucas. Merchandising is a good way to preserve memories of characters, but I guess that I didn't see that because of my anti-materialistic beleifs, good point.
I have also seen some very vulgar comic strips by Mark...and that is something that Vaughn flirted with, nudity and language, but never put out there in all it's rawness. Vaughn did it perfectly...you just had to chuckle at how he wrote and what he wrote and the art, which helped to deliver his stories was spot on. He was the ultimate adult cartoonist, without getting too raunchy and just plain nasty.
I know that Mark Bode had much success with his own stuff...kudos to you...hope it continues... But to draw Vaughn's characters and to presume that Vaughn's fans would accept your attempts to be the 'new' Vaughn, whether you advertise yourself to be or not, is ridiculous. I hate to see anybody draw Vaughn's characters...he is the ONLY one that really did them justice. Without Vaughn as a stepping stone, I doubt that you would have as much successes as you say that you have.
I loved Vaughn Bode's cartoons...I read and I collected them...I spent hours drawing lizards and Muffy Pop and the Frankenturd Monster! Vaughn Bode was an absolute genius. But as smart as he was, so too he was stupid. To play around with drugs and the noose thing...which eventually killed him. He had so much more to offer. As for merchandising, you are correct. He only approved a few t-shirts. He did it for the love of the strip. Shame on his talentless son, who copied him for the bucks!
Thats what concerns me about Mark, did Vaughn merchandise his characters at all? I've read a few old magazines that had Cheech shirts but that was it. Vaughn was a toughie that did on;y what he wanted and enjoyed to make a living.
Oh he had huge lists of things he wanted to merchandise . he wanted to be the perverted Disney. he wanted to make toys and movies and be thye most diverse artist in the world then he died.. The things i have done with the work is blessed by him . otherwise i wouldnt do it. for some reason(cause our shit is soo cool) people think that they have more of a say then i do , but the reality is I own everything Bode and will do great things with the name and worlds. Hence Puma and Universalstudios
Wait, he wanted to be a DIVERSE artist? The only other person that I can think of that focuses on that is myself, plenty of artists now focus are angular styles and angular alone, which cloneifys their characters.

Vaughn would never have approved of all these toys and jackets and tennis shoes and crap. He is rolling in his grave.
