I really enjoyed your playing. My hobby is jazz piano; I've been listening to Art Tatum, Andre Previn, Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson for about forty years.
I play some, but am only minimally skilled. Could you give some advice about playing by ear in all keys because I would like to play in nice clubs.
7, I just love your stuff, and Carmichael and Gershwin are my all-time favourites.
I hope it's not churlish to say, but as there's so much richness and possibility, as you say, in such composers' output, would there be an alternative in some shorter treatments of their songs, focusing on the original melodies?
One other thing I forgot to mention. I think its way cooler to play Cm (like you played) as the first chord of the bridge rather than Ab (which I hear most folks playing). The G7 preceding the Cm makes for a better transition than simply a turn around to Ab. Anywhoo, just thought I'd talk technicalities since you are a jazz instructor and all. :)
"Hoagy really knew..." Hoagy??? Don't you mean Johnny Mercer, NOT Hoagy Carmichael? Johnny Mercer wrote more than 1000 songs, and won or was nominated for 42 Oscars for his songs! Please, at least get the man's name right. Give credit where it's due. Thanks.
Ooops, my mistake. On this one, Mercer wrote the lyrics, not the music. But still, let's give him some credit. The lyrics are pure poetry of the best kind.
I agree, the lyrics are a very important part of the song, even if nobody is singing it. I try and learn the lyrics to most of the tunes (not all) I learn - Mercer's are among the best not to mention his music. He was also an excellent singer.
Ahhh, small world! Thanks for the nice comment! I actually the piano at Seaford Head Community College so I know Seaford quite well. I know what you mean about piano players everywhere...my friend Frank Harrisson (amazing pianist) recently moved to Brighton and of course we have Mark Edwards in Peacehaven...no wonder there aren't any gigs! Lets get together sometime!
duh Charlie "Bird" Parker ;-D great tune perfect to play on a rainy day like today do you that by ear or do you read sheet music? I want to know which one is best
Well, I do read music but mostly I try and learn tunes from records. I use lead-sheets as a reference but often the melodies and chords are wrong. I think learning by ear is the best way....you also need strong reading skills in jazz though. thanks for the comment

Sweet. I'm trying to learn it on piano, but I'm not very good. Will keep trying, though.

Love how you use the 5, #5, 6, on the Abmaj7 at 1:43. Thats one of my favorite patterns. Great playing, once again.

Very nice.
Is this the original accompaniment piano part for this song?
Thanks for the sweet tune!

Really nice vibe you get on this one, and such a gorgeous tune as well, very nice.
I noticed from your profile that you are in Hove. I am just down the road in Seaford (I get those seagulls as well!). Jazz pianists are everywhere.

Pretty tune, very nicely played. I like your chord subs. Is that a sea gull I hear at 2:48?? Nice job with a tough tune.
