Out of tune and too many clams but not as obnoxious as most trumpet/cornet/ flugel renditions when guys can't tongue at all and then try play high notes that wind up sounding like garbage. Mark Van Cleave used to play a pretty good version with high notes but all the other with ornamental high range that I have heard were trash.
with all the foul notes sung by drunk stoned and otherwise untalented fools who have sung this anthem. I say this is by far the best heard it performed.
@chaffivi fun fact... our national anthem is based on the tune of a drinking song. So... I'm not surprised it suits drunk/stoned/otherwise untalented fools well to sing 'foul notes'. That's kind of how it's designed...
@DancingSpiderman Yeah, I played trumpet (not very well) and I am well acquainted with grace notes. I always considered Chuck sloppy, but a very good musician, creative and entertaining. Ever go to a Maynard concert shortly after a Mangione concert? Musically they were very different, but you'd have to say Maynard and his band were always MUCH tighter than Chuck. I'll count the off-color notes that I hear, and then you can critique me on which ones were not really bad notes.
@Baritone45 Once he got to the high part, he sounded great. It was chilly out. I'll give him a pass on the first phrase. Obviously he's great, but I find his sloppiness distracting at times.
@Baritone45, bro, nooo... hahahaha, no, don't spend the time to do what you said you were going to do... I'm friendly, not rude, but I won't reply with a critique with the number of grace note/sour notes played by CM, I'm sporadically very busy...
CM and MF two different styles, different emphases on attacks on the beat, etc, we know...
Thumbs up if you came her to see if he would break out into "Feels so Good"

It would be funny if halfway in, he spontaneously broke into "Feels so Good".

@Flailwielder They actually did that in KOTH.

@Flailwielder I was expecting that after seeing too much koth, would've been epic

@Flailwielder It would have been perfect if he did it right when the standing ovation started.

@Flailwielder Especially on "was still there," because it has the exact same intervals as the opening line!

Chuck was always known for his (presumably intentional) sour notes. But man, the early to middle part of this really makes me grimace.
Baritone45 1 year ago 2
@Baritone45 No sour notes heard by this flugelhorn player.
Those were what we call Grace Notes.
Chuck does tend to add in a lot of grace notes. But those were intentional, not sour notes.
