There are two kinds of jellyfish commonly called box jellyfish: The larger, marginally-more-harmless Bahamian box jelly, and tiny-yet-lethal irukanji, sometimes called the Australian box jelly. Box Jellyfish stings are not always lethal. It may be the most venemous animal alive (but not the most poisonous), but more often than not people survive. There is no venemous creature which kills every time it stings.

The Portugese Man O War is Huge and does not look like a Box Jellyfish. If it's a Man O War Stinging you, you'll know.

Please stop pretending you know more about a Jellyfish you've probably never seen than someone who's actually encountered one.

@juventinorocks You're right. A sting by a box jelly fish is fatal to humans if they are not treated, it causes the body to enter a severe state of shock and cardiac/respiratory failure follows. However, there is an anti-venom available, which is why out of the hundreds of people stung by them every year, only a few result in the loss of one's life. The anti-venom does not eliminate the pain though, so the pain is incredibly agonizing and lasts for a while, even if death does not ensue.

I've been stung twice in less than a year, once in the Mediterranean Sea and once in the French Ocean. It hurts but it's not a tragedy. Just remember not to shower for a few days, because fresh water kind of activates the poison. Get out of the water, rub the sting with sand for a fee minutes and go back into salt water. THe first time, I just went on surfing and it took me about 6 months to fully recover. Last time it was 2 weeks ago today, and it's almost recovered already....

The average time to die from a box jellyfish sting is 8-10 minutes maybe less if stung around the chest area.The reason for dieing so quickly is because its toxins that it realeases kill the red blood cells.If stung on the leg or arm it will be very sore but you problably wont die.
